Curufin and Celegorm.

Playing Shadow of Mordor on the PS4 —great graphics btw.— brought my love for Tolkien's First and Second Age characters back. Sadly I am no lover of the Third Age, much less the Fourth. (¬︵¬) I guess I just really don't like humans in fantasy.

But I digress.
I always loved Feanor and his family, and Celebrimbor is just awesome in the game! (^▽^)

The game inspired me to paint a couple of Feanor's sons, mainly the ones that are often disliked, Celegorm and Curufin. Ignoring their misdeeds, I greatly enjoy the close friendship these two have.

I will probably do more Feanor-related art for a short time, or at least as long as I will be playing Shadow of Mordor.

Who are your favorite characters from the First and Second Ages?

I used to hate those two, but now I pretty much have a soft spot for every son of Feanor. Gotta love that crazy family. And my favourites will always be Feanor and Maglor. <3 (Well, and Fingon and Finwe, too.)

Anyway, I LOVE this. They both look amazing, and I really love their clothes. I want those clothes now...

Ha! I feel exactly like you do about Curufin and Celegorm. They used to be my least favorite characters, but now I totally love them. Strange world. As you said though; "gotta love that crazy family". Oh I love Feanor and Maglor. Well Feanor, is my most favorite character ever. I also love Fingon and Fingolfin. Finwe I enjoyed but I felt as if I got too little of his actual character from the books. Ah well.

Thank you so much for the wonderful compliment. I am glad to hear you like their clothing.

Feanor is my most favourite, too. I like Finwe, because I always picture him as a sort of long suffering father. With a son like Feanor, how could he not be? xD

You're welcome!

Fingolfin?
Fingolfin is not in the painting. It's Curufin and Celegorm. The blonde elf is Celegorm the Fair, third son of Feanor.

Breathtakingly beautiful art, as always my friend. I can't say that I've played any of the games, or read the books, but the LotR movies brought out the writer in me and I've been in love with fantasy ever since.

I am glad you like this piece. Oh, I am sure one day I will paint Feanor. He is my most favorite elf after all, but I fear I will disappoint you. I imagine Feanor exactly the same way as I painted Curufin here, only with longer, darker hair, and dressed mostly in reds. But facial structure wise, I always imagined Curufin and Feanor to be almost identical.

Thanks ever so much! Oh, I actually like Turin, one of three humans I like from the Silmarillion (the other two being Haleth and Andreth). I usually find it hard to like human characters in books where supernatural beings exist. But these three were truly exceptional in my eyes. I would have loved to know more about Turin's stay in Doriath and the entire debacle with Saeros. XD

have you read unfinished tales? and the history of middle earth? There are a lot more details there.  even poems!

MathiaArkoniel In reply to Muraki3777 [2015-03-30 15:21:44 +0000 UTC]

Yep, I read them.... Can't say I enjoyed them. I never liked Tolkien's style of writing, but I love the world of the Elves and their history, so I forced myself through the materials to learn as much about the elves as possible (and I not-so-guiltily skipped over the human sections). The Shibboleth of Feanor is my favorite from the History of Middle Earth.

He is good to learn about elves.
Feanor is one hell of a character...not one of my favorite elves but the first age would have been very different had he lived...

Ha, I love how their expressions are just dripping with haughtiness and contempt. I can't look at this for too long, it makes me want to hide in a corner and re-evaluate my worth as a human being.

"Who are your favorite characters from the First and Second Ages?" - damn, I think I need to re-read the Silmarillion to answer that I read it a long time ago and now it's all a mess of prettiness, blood, betrayal and starlight in my head.

Melian and Thingol were always favourites of mine, I like how they're one of the few balanced couples in Tolkien's universe. They're both powerful, have their own personality, and there's none of the boring "sitting at home weaving a tapestry for my husband who's at war" bullshit. There's also a human warrior queen/tribe chieftain in the early days of Men that's only passingly mentioned, whose name I forget. (I always wanted more interesting female characters in Tolkien's work. Sadly, he was a man of his time so we have to be content with all the heroic male elves and men.) I remember not liking most of the "main" characters in the Silmarillion for some reason (probably too perfect/not developed enough), though the Feanorians are alright. Oh, I like Sauron! I'd love to see pre-fall Sauron in your style, I think you're absolutely the best person to draw him

MathiaArkoniel In reply to GreenSprite [2015-03-29 10:24:52 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much for your comment. I am glad you like their expressions.

Oh, I always loved Thingol too! And as you said, I loved Thingol and Melian for the relative equality that their relationship had, unlike most other marriages. And yes, I did sadly notice that there's a rather strong tendency in Tolkien's world to shove women aside as 'accessories' or 'fillers', without much character to them, with the exception of a rare few here and there. Ah well.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MathiaArkoniel In reply to EricaXchan [2015-03-24 01:24:15 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes. They are completely different characters. "Cele" means silver. So you have lots of names with "Cele" in Tolkien's world (e.g. Celebrant, Celebrian, Celebrindal, Celebrimbor, Celegorm, etc). It can be a bit confusing.

Curufin and Celegorm are two of the seven sons of Feanor. Feanor is ... well, he is the most awesome, genius, and sadly, self-obsessed elf ever to have lived in Tolkien's world. The story of Feanor and his sons is told in The Silmarillion. If you only read the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit (or only watched the movies), it's only natural you would not know of them, so no worries.

You can find out more about Celegorm and Curufin and Celeborn if you visit the wikia pages.

My favorites were always Maedhros and Glorfindel.

Thank you ever so much for the wonderful compliment. I am overjoyed to hear you like how this piece turned out.

Oh, I always loved Maedhros. He is definitely one of my top favorite elves together with his brother Maglor, right after Feanor and Fingolfin.

Celebrimbor is in Shadow of Mordor as a spirit bound to the main character. But there are scenes with him and his past (mostly innacurate, but who cares), and also scenes with Annatar (Sauron). You get to see him fight a bit when you active his abilities and he sorta 'takes over' your body. But what's really cool is that they are making now a DLC, that will tell the story of Celebrimbor in more detail and we'll get to play as him. Yaay! Can't wait.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Laurfinde In reply to MathiaArkoniel [2015-03-28 20:14:49 +0000 UTC]

Poor Maglor! I feel the worst for him and Maedhros of all the Feanorians. Especially after they adopted Elrond & Elros.

Ooooh-- I love how they portrayed Annatar! (I couldn't resist waiting to play and looked up the game on Youtube.) I was afraid they would make him look too Sauron/Necromancer-ish. Unfortunately, I won't get to play with the DLC since I have a PS3 without internet. But I'll look forward to seeing more Celebrimbor clips. AU back story clips are better than none at all!
