Description
GIMP, 3h+The making of my SNow Elf Study.
Another little portrait study from a photo. I really liked the calm atmosphere and cold lighting...
Thanks to Liancary-stock ([link] ) for allowing digital painting from her original photo: [link]

first off love her! Second you did this entire drawing with only three layers? 1)background 2)grey 3)color? How did you color it without smudging the well all of it, lol. Sorry but new to digital art and am trying to figure it out.

First off, thanks a lot
Second, yes, I used only 3 layers. For the color pass, I simply use a layer in "color" mode above the greyscale painting. So that when you paint colors on this top layer, you can't screw up the black and white values underneath.
I write a little more in depth on this subject here: matou31.deviantart.com/art/Joh… , it's far from perfect, but you'll get the idea. Hope this helps! Anyways, thanks a for stopping by!

Oups! Sorry if that wasn't clear, but I don't use a grey scale mode for my black and white painting. I use a normal mode layer on which I paint only in black and white. But I guess that doesn't make a great difference, the end result would still be the same I think. Cheers

Thanks! I learnt that trick very recently actually... I only used it once or twice at the moment, but it's surprisingly efficient!
