I don't know if you know but in geography we learned that this peninsula is called Appennine Pensinsula after the Appennine mountains that make up most of the pensinsula.

Yes that's correct, thought the concept of Italian geographical region is again different both from the peninsula and the modern state, infact it includes Italian islands, the part of Italy plus some zones at the border (like Ticino, Istria and the island of Corsica) ^^
