"It's not your fault, Mason." Gregor had tried to console the shocked young male. "These things just...happen." But even as he said them, Gregor seemed to deflate, like perhaps he didn't believe them himself anymore.
"How can you say that!?" Mason blurted out. He had always been respectful of his grandfather- to most authority -but he couldn't hold back this time. "It is my fault! She went looking for me! How can it not be my fault!?" But Mason was irrational, inconsolable. No matter what Gregor said after that point wouldn't have made a difference.
"I'm sorry." Was all the elder could muster.
"You blame me, don't you?" Mason cried. Gregor, visibly shocked, tried to object.

"No- Mason, please. Just come home, no one blames-"

"You do!" Mason cut him off. "Everyone will! How could they not? Because of me, she's dead!" His eyes stung and his throat burned. His knees began to shake. He didn't hear anything of what Gregor said after that. He took off then, running as fast and as hard as he could. Running away from the fear.

Mason's heart pounded, his legs shook, and his lungs screamed for him to stop, each gasp burning his throat. But he couldn't just stop. The images of his mother being smothered and crushed beneath the rocks was too much to bare and all he could do was flee from them; even so, one can only run from their own mind for so long. As the images engulfed his mind, he ran blindly, not seeing the world he was moving in. Branches whipped him in the face and sharp rocks stabbed his paws. Yet, he only stumbled and continued on. He couldn't imagine facing his sister, his brothers, even his father. They would all blame him. Suddenly, the ground gave way, and Mason almost lost his footing. He came back to the real world in time, stumbling forward but catching himself just before he fell into a massive crater. No life bloomed around it. Mostly dirt, some grass, a few saplings near the edge. Not even birds flew overhead. He had heard stories as a child of a pack that had been eradicated by a meteor, but this thought wouldn't enter his mind for a long time.

Gasping and shaking, Mason was forced to stop by this crater in the earth. His eyes were blurry and a lump formed in his throat. Shakily, he slid down into the hole in the earth. He moved toward the center, each shaky step burning his legs. Finally, when he reached the middle, his body gave out. He slouched into the dirt and began to cry; hard, quaking sobs, like that of a child, but deep and pitiful. He wished with every fiber that this hole would suck him up and bury him, as if it were his own grave. It's what he deserved, after all. He had blood on his paws. It was his fault. He practically killed his mother.

No- don't sugar coat it, he thought. He did kill his mother. There was no way around it. He was guilty.
