Description
I thought about trying to adopt this guy a while ago, BUT I never got around to it until now.
I spent way too much time on his bio....
Name: Zacheraia ("the Lord remembers")
Nickname: Zac
Age: 11
Breed: American Quarter Horse
Height: 14 hh
Sex: Stallion
Color: Chestnut Tobiano
Personality: Cautious, easily frightened, very timid, anxious, (can become aggressive when very frightened)
Bio: Zac was born in a private barn owned by a small family, where the only other horses were his parents. He lived a quiet, simple life for about two and a half months, before the family went bankrupt and had to quickly sell the three horses. It had been their intention to sell the foal all along, but serious financial issues called for more drastic measures. Unfortunately, due to rash last minute decisions, Zac was sold separately from his mother, and ended up as a new attraction at a free-lance petting zoo. Because of this, he developed serious anxiety if he was left alone and was constantly frightened by loud noises or unfamiliar objects and people. Although he was in a petting zoo, he did not have any substantial human contact or discipline. He often ran away from visitors and even his new owner, and had to be lassoed to be near. His place at the petting zoo only lasted a very short time because of this. On his first birthday, he was sold to a stable, looking to enlarge it's amount of horses, to train and put in shows. The owner, an inexperienced and naive woman, thought she could train and make Zac a wonderful show horse. But her methods were quite barbaric. She tried for two years to get a saddle on him, going slow and gradually introducing it to him, but every time, he refused her completely. She eventually grew impatient and began forcefully trying to saddle and bridle him. This only frightened him more, and lead him to rear and buck, and sometimes, even bite. His owner resorted to using a whip every time he disobeyed her commands, not realizing that Zac had little to no idea what she wanted him to do. Eventually, Zac unwillingly accepted the saddle and bridle, only to have it used against him. When his owner mounted him and taught him the gates, if he disobeyed, she would yank on the reins. This caused the bit to pinch the corners of Zac's mouth, and sometimes even make them bleed. It was not uncommon for him to throw her off his back, but after a few times with the whip, he learned not to throw his rider off anymore. By Zac's third birthday, his owner had had enough of him. He eventually just stopped moving every time she mounted him. He was a statue, no matter how much she kicked or yanked him to move. She saw all of her hard work wasted in Zac, and gave no second thought about selling him. She sold him to a wealthy stable, intending to use Zac for riding lessons for younger kids. But upon learning how aggressive and timid he was, they tried demanding a refund. Mysteriously, when they tried to contact the woman again, they could not reach her at all. Without a refund as an option, they knew they could not sell Zac the way he was, but they had no time to train him themselves. They listed him on several horse websites and forums for sale for a very cheap price, and then they waited. And as they suspected, they waited, and waited. Eventually, they waited almost four years for someone to buy him, but no one would. By this time, Zac had acclimated to his new surroundings, but was still very timid and cautious about the stable hands and other horses. The most contact he had with the people there was when he was fed and turned out in the pasture. He was not worked or handled much, which made him become even more distant from humans than he already was. One summer evening, a young stable hand was taking a smoke break before heading home. He didn't finish the entire cigarette, but he flicked it onto the ground, not knowing that it had landed in pile of old hay that lay beside the barn. By night fall, the entire structure was engulfed in flames. Before the stable owners knew what happened, most of the horses had broken out and scattered onto large property. The fire department soon relinquished the blaze, and helped rally the horses that had survived, but Zac was no where to be found among them, nor among the bodies found trapped inside the barn. Having never encountered fire before, Zac had been so frightened that he ran as fast as he could in the opposite direction of the flames, and didn't stop until his legs couldn't carry him any longer. The stable owners put up flyers around their town and a couple towns around them, but it was no use. A part of them was relieved to have the dysfunctional stallion out of their hair. He wandered quiet backyards and small, hidden back roads that had very little to no traffic. He was constantly paranoid and any small noise would send him running again. Before he knew it, he was many towns away from where he'd been at the stable. At this time, even though he could smell water, he had a hard time finding it, not being a wild horse. He became very malnourished, although he ate as much grass as he could. For several months he wandered like this, still wearing the halter from the stable. As he was wandering down another back road one day, he stumped upon a young man who was stuck on the side of the road with a flat tire. Zac paid no attention to the unmoving car, not knowing that the young man was inside. But the young man definitely noticed Zac. He knew that there were only a couple of people who owned horses in his town, and this horse was not one of them. He was smart and quietly searched his truck for something to lure Zac to him before even getting out. He found an apple from a packed lunched that he never got to and slowly opened the truck door. Oblivious, Zac continued wandering, while the young man slid out of the truck and suddenly called to Zac. Startled, Zac whipped around to see what it was that had scared him, and was just about to bolt, when he caught sent of the apple held loosely in the mans hand. He stood frozen, unsure whether he should run or not. He hadn't had an apple for a very long time. And he wanted that apple. The young man beckoned Zac forward, extending his hand toward him, to show him the apple. Slowly, very, very slowly, Zac approached the young man, before rearing and bolting away right back to where he'd been before. It went on like this for quite a long time, but the young man didn't lose his patience and continued to stand still and speak soothingly to Zac. Finally, Zac approached again, this time he stopped much closer to the man, stretched out his neck, and touched his top lip to the apple. And not long after that, the young man was allowed to pet Zac, but only on his muzzle. With some help of a few friends, the young man, who introduced himself to Zac as William Hunt, pulled some strings and borrowed a trailer (and a tow-truck for his truck) to take Zac back to his home. He decided to keep Zac, though he had to work extra over-time to pay for him, and put a lot of effort into re-training him. He intended to train him for cutting and barrel racing, but for now, they would stick to the basics. Gaining each others trust. He seemed knowledgeable about horses, and was very kind. He took his time gaining Zac's trust, and eventually, by Zac's eighth birthday, he was ridable again, but only for William. He would rear, buck, or even run away if anyone tried to touch past his withers. It seemed like things were turning around for him, and he was finally content. He'd even gained a proper name, one he wanted to remember. Zacheraia. But one day, William's brother and sister-in-law stopped by unexpectedly, with their young daughter. Zac was being lead back to his stall, but before William could warn them, the daughter came running over, squealing and reaching out for Zac. He was startled, remembering his days at the petting zoo suddenly. He gave a small rear, kicking out his front hooves, and before he could be settled, he struck the girl with just enough force to knock her over. But reared again, when he heard her parents wail for her name and come running at them as well, and landed on her leg. After the large commotion had ended, and the girl had been taken to the hospital, William received a call. Zac had crushed the girls leg, and they threatened to sue him if he did not sell the horse. William was torn. He knew that Zac had no idea what he'd just done, he was only acting out of instinct and fear. He didn't want to sell Zac..they'd become such good friends in what seemed a very short amount of time. But still, he couldn't risk that rift between his brothers family and himself, and ultimately decided to sell Zac. He searched for someone to take him who would understand what Zac needed and stumbled upon a promising stable; White Stallion Rescue. He contacted the owner and explained his situation. The owner accepted his offer, and bought Zac, with the only condition that William was able to continue their training and be able to see Zac as much as he wanted. Eventually, William was offered a job as a stable hand and gratefully took it. Now, at age 11, Zac is hopefully in his permanent home. As much as WRS's staff can help it, Zac won't have to be sold ever again.
