Ooh, it's been a while since I've seen a really good sunset photo. And wow, do I love this one. "Fire in the Sky" is a perfect title; the rich and stong colours are magnificent.

Gorgeous shot! Do you live far from the beach in Saltash? I'm lucky enough to have a couple only minutes away. Always down there lugging the tripod and camera around

Thanks buddy!
Saltash is about 20 minutes from the nearest beach, which is Portwrinkle I reckon, so it's no hassle to jump in the car and head down there on a whim. I'm the same as you; I keep the tripod in the car just in case...

Fire in The Sky is a real rock oldie! So not fitting to the setting of the picture of course, but the title made me remember the song.
And you're quite welcome ^^

Thank you my friend
I arrived at a lucky moment - there were 5 or 6 other people on the beach when I got there. As soon as they saw the camera come out they didn't stick around, but they left me some nice footprints to work with

btw do you shoot on auto mode, manual mode or what!??

matt-h-mitchell In reply to oO-Rein-Oo [2008-11-26 16:40:02 +0000 UTC]
For the land/waterscapes I prefer shutter priority because the camera controls the aperture and warns me if I need to tweak the exposure compensation - I use that a lot because I don't have any filters yet. Usually set on -2 stops.
For people portraits I tend to cheat and use the portrait setting on my D40
I haven't played with Manual much, but I dislike using Auto because I think I should be "beyond" it. Nothing wrong with it I guess.
What about you?

oO-Rein-Oo In reply to matt-h-mitchell [2008-11-26 16:49:13 +0000 UTC]
For landscapes and waterscapes I tend to use the landscape mode (cheating too ) but only when it is bright, when it is a bit darker, for example at sunsets, I use the shutter priority mode. I'm always using the portrait mode for people too, but I set the default always to the auto cause if I need a fast shot I let the camera deal with everything while I focus on the shot itself.
I also like to play with the manual setting, but only when I have time to do it and when I'm taking my "studio" photos, like my waterdrop and my self portrait that I recently uploaded.
Auto mode is OK too... Ah and for close ups I go to the macro mode, see what the camera did and then I go for the manual mode and kinda "copy" the settings to have a reference what to do, always with manual focus and sometimes with flash. I unfortunately have only one lens, the one that was in the camera kit (18-55mm). I hope I can get another lens so that I can play more
