Some times I used a large flat brush & other times I pure the paint on.

mostly paper, but I have used wood before. I like to us paper mostly because of how quick the surface is when paint is applied. I also like the smooth surface some papers have. You don't really get that from canvas.

Yeah, me, too... Paper is really smooth, whereas sometimes you can see the structure of the canvas through the finished painting.
