I appreciate your critique, it was some of what I had been thinking but you say it much more succinctly!

I think it's a great METAPHORICAL depiction. and I agree with a lot of commentors. Some people get offended WAY too easy.

A lot of work, and I'm sure it was worth it for the DD. Congrats!

I agree wholeheartedly with the following portion of the comment by jadestone45

"I see it as showing the Lord's willingness to sacrifice himself for a selfish, unsatisfied people. The fact that the women are acting so savage and greedy... He may have died for our sins, but that doesn't mean we've all been changed. People absolutely crave being saved from hell, going to Communion every Sunday to drink the Lord's blood, eat his flesh.

You all may not want to admit it, but that's kinda the way it is. We're selfish, we're greedy, we're sinful. Everybody's sinned, whether it be big or small."

I am christian, but not religious. I am NOT offended AT ALL. While it may not be the most graceful or dignified of views, but it is a firm and clear message of the representation of Christs sacrifice. Sometimes the message must be in your face to get itself across. The piece is very worthy of a DD, and Thank You MattaeusBall and Your team for having the courage and fortitude to bring it to us.

I've never been Christian, but I do know a bit of history and mythology. It's possible that all, but Jesus, are women may be a message in of it's self. The Church does like to go on about how original sin was Eve's fault, and women can't be priests for it.

Personally I prefer Lilith. She didn't take shit from anyone.

some women are priests, the opinion of whether or not they should be is debated. women are more of the supporters in a church than the spiritual leaders, but that is just as an important role as being the leader. im pretty sure it doesnt have to do with eve

Sandahl In reply to Why-did-Kenji-die [2012-04-08 16:58:58 +0000 UTC]

It's a big thing in Catholicism, where women absolutely cannot be priests. The Pope recently got into a tiff about that too. I find all of this to be amusing since they Catholicism holds high regard to the Virgin Mary.

I'm aware that different denominations have different rules, and some do have women priests. From a historical standpoint, the Last Supper was painted in reference to Catholic mythology since Catholicism was the dominant religion in Italy during the Renaissance.(still is too, but its grip on politics and society isn't as strong as it was then.) Much of the artwork during leading up to and during the renaissance was directly commissioned by the Church.

yeah... well i disagree with catholicism but i still doubt their reason for lack of female leadership is because of eve

This is beautiful.
I could go on and rave about your magnificent use of symbolism, but I won't.
Partially because that's what everyone else who approves of this piece is doing, but also because I'm not quite sure I see it in the same light as it was made.
Anywho~
Well done.

provocative piece. i'm a Christian and my first response to this wasn't negative. this made me go, "wow. just look at what Christ did for us. gave his life for people who don't always care and indulge in nastiness." then i looked closer and saw how it could be interpreted as offensive. i still like it though. to me at least, the piece reminds me of the sacrifice made for all of us.

I think it's supposed to represent the whole "eating and drinking the body and blood of Christ" thing. I think the women are supposed to be the sinners that Jesus gave his life for, because the woman on his left is holding a cup under his slit wrist and the women on his right look like they're eating his ribs.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

BatVomit In reply to SpongeMuffin [2012-04-08 01:48:59 +0000 UTC]

Athiesm is not believing in god, however you can still be part of a religion if you do not believe in god, you may follow their values and teachings.
Athiest is not the opposite of christianity, but the opposite of Theism, and agnostic the bit between. Not having religion at all is the opposite of religion.

Sorry for spelling errors, it's almost 3 am and I'm tired.

SpongeMuffin In reply to BatVomit [2012-04-08 06:57:17 +0000 UTC]

I wasn't speaking specifically of Christianity and Atheism being opposite, I meant exactly what you said. I just didn't think I had to get that detailed for a silly little DA post

Justax90 In reply to SpongeMuffin [2012-04-08 01:36:53 +0000 UTC]

Can't choose that one, I was made into a christian by my parents.
And one does not simply get rid of that title.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SpongeMuffin In reply to Justax90 [2012-04-08 06:56:34 +0000 UTC]

Yes you can :/ A title doesn't work if you don't follow the religion that the title belongs to. If you don't follow Christian rules and don't believe the Christian god, then you're not Christian.

Justax90 In reply to SpongeMuffin [2012-04-08 08:07:44 +0000 UTC]

-checks profile-
Thought so.
Yes, it does stick to you, and you can't simply put that title on yourself without help from the church.
Damn, America's educational system really is fucked up.

SpongeMuffin In reply to Justax90 [2012-04-08 17:51:30 +0000 UTC]

Excuse me?

It only sticks if you let it stick. Religion is like clothes, if you don't like your shirt, take it off. Don't let it sit on you and molder just because your parents want you to wear it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Justax90 In reply to SpongeMuffin [2012-04-08 21:08:01 +0000 UTC]

Excuse you.

It sticks either way, you can just ignore it if you want to.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SpongeMuffin In reply to Justax90 [2012-04-08 21:31:49 +0000 UTC]

It doesn't stick unless you want it to. There's no rule that you have to stick with the religion you were born into, that's preposterous.

And now, it is time for Easter dinner, buhbye.

"atheist [Γ‘ythi ist]
(plural atheists)
unbeliever in God or deities: somebody who does not believe in God or deities
I've studied religion for 5 years, I know the definition of Atheist.
