My main problem with it is actually the extreme hair and makeup. I feel like it's trying to be edgier than it needs to be to get its point across.
You could really interpret this negatively or positively depending on how you wanted to look at it, and for that reason I think it does have merit as artwork, and is even worthy of being looked at by the audience a DD would bring. That you're arguing over it only validates it. Obviously it's at least worth talking about, which is more than you could say for a lot of other deviations.

i think your comment about the extreme hair and make up thing shouldn't be taken negativly at all....but more like constructive critisism

People are getting wayy to upset over this.
If you actually took the time to think about what it could mean, like what PoisonParasyt said, "i dont entirely get it myself, but i believe it has something to do with eating and drinking the body and blood of Christ literally instead of figuratively." then maybe you wouldn't get so upset over it. owo

Plus art is art and it is how some people express themselves, whether the artist did this for attention or just to represent their thoughts. Opinions are opinions, but really, you should look more into this piece of art before judging. =< I understand some people getting offended too, I'm just saying. o3o

I really love the idea behind the piece, but I think it could have been executed a little bit better. The pink hair really thows it off, and makes it just seen silly. Again though, LOVING the concept.

Brace yourself, as there will be plenty of comments about how terrible this is. And while I agree it's a bit odd to be making this a DD on Easter, I say more power to you. The fact that it came up on Easter just makes it have more symbolic impact, in my humble ppinion.

I think I have to agree with WolflingShadow. I do love it but something was bothering me: The pink hair...
But I do really love your work and it really does deserve a DD! ^^ Well done!

I like this. I'd have to say the fact that so many people are talking about this (even if it isn't always in a favorable light) pretty much just means that you've nailed your objective on the head. I won't be worried about the 'i'm christian and i disapprove of this' politics. I've met many people who are only christian in church and when they think it 'counts', this forum no doubt being one of those places. ....Sooooo....what I'm trying to say is:

You did a good job of making sure the gore was there without going over the top. It was tastefully done compared to what I've seen in other media forms (aka zombie jesus being eaten by prostitutes, strips of flesh, screaming in terror, yada yada yada.) Also the female models have a good way of creating atmosphere. They're at a feast and it shows. I really like the brunette on the far right nearly crawling on the table...but on the other hand, i have to wonder why the one model has pink hair.

In either case, congrats on the DD.

While this shows a lot of artistic technique, and I applaud the artist on his raw skill, I'd normally ignore this piece because it makes me uncomfortable. I'm really disappointed that deviantart chose to make this a DD on Easter.

I have to second that comment. While the intent of the artist is interesting, and the work put into the photo is apparent, the timing of the DD and the obvious way in which an offensive point was bludgeoned into the piece lessens both the point and the artist.

tislife In reply to FlailingHands [2012-04-08 18:33:28 +0000 UTC]

While I can agree that one could find that offense in this piece, literally hundreds of people have taken the portrait of the last supper and revamped it somehow: some have done "Zombie Last Supper," others have done "Furry Last Supper," and I have even seen a "Pony Last Supper." I can see quite obviously how this CAN be taken as offensive to people who are only looking at it as a bash at christianity. But as Okitakehyate mentioned above and PoisonParasyt mentioned below, it is just a literal interpretation of the last supper, ie, LITERALLY eating of his flesh and LITERALLY drinking of his blood.

To the people who find offense in this piece, it isn't because of the artwork that you are offended, it is because of some insecurity you have within yourself that you find things such as this to be "attacks" or an "obvious ... offensive point." So I suggest, in my humble opinion, when you find a piece offensive somehow, look at yourself and figure out what it is that offends YOU and deal with that because it has nothing to do with the artist or the artwork produced.

Hrm~
Yes, I'm a Christian, but I'm not going to say I'm offended. I like the idea, as an artist, of someone switching the metaphor to literal. The *idea* alone is clever and/or cute. I also appreciate that Jesus is kept, well, male Jesus. (I've seen too much gender-switching lately). That means something and I'll appreciate that; that you didn't really drag Jesus down with this piece. He's left awesome cool and I thank you for that.

As for the piece. The look is shiny (I can't really say clean but that's what I'm trying to say), the models are pretty (nice makeup), but it's not edgy or shocking or impressive or anything to me. I'm not affected by it, in either direction. I'm just left with... "Meh, nothing new~" :

If it was your intention to be "edgy" (good god, i hope you're better than that) thennnn I'm swayed to disliking this. (Also, pink hair??)
You did do nice camera and modeling work, but it left no impression on me. Now, if every model was specifically cast to be each disciple and was portrayed as such in this bloody scenario, THEN you would have had my full attention and piqued my interest and swayed my favor and I would say you deserve praise.
But.. Meh~

I touched on this better in a comment above but I feel like a clarification is needed for you specifically. The "Last Supper" being mentioned in this piece is not talking about your "Last Supper" but rather taking a piece of art produced over 1000 years after the crucifixion and reworking it to portray his feelings or message or whatever.

Look I realize that we need to let the art community be free to create and express themselves, but really? Come on! This is ain't art! This is just a lame hipster attempt to be "edgy". You know what Da Vinci's Last Supper...that was art. This? Just another modern artist's attempt to make a name for himself by makin' something that's already been done (multiple times) and whore it out with some kind of Warhol/Serrano bullshit. Look if you want views then do what all the other "photographers" here do that have slutty chicks at their disposal: Get them to take off their tops and pose out like it's a Playboy magazine and stop trying so hard to be a bloody trend sender.

I think it's supposed to represent the whole "eating and drinking the body and blood of Christ" thing. I think the women are supposed to be the sinners that Jesus gave his life for, because the woman on his left is holding a cup under his slit wrist and the women on his right look like they're eating his ribs.

The artist is playing around with the idea of the symbolism of communion (the bread and the wine represent Jesus' body broken and blood spilled on the cross) into some bizarre and "edgy" cannibalistic orgy.
It's also highly offensive to the Christian faith and to most Christians. And to Da Vinci, the author of the original. The artist is playing at taking a religious metaphor literally, while simultaneously spitting in the eye of a two thousand year old religion and it's constituents. I am curious to see if the artist has similar pieces providing "alternate" views of the revelations given to Mohammed, or the enlightenment of the Buddha.

No need to apologize.
The Artist has a right to insult whomever they like. Atheists are perfectly free to love the picture. The picture is aiming to offend, which means some people are offended, and others are happy that somebody else is offended.
I just wanted to clarify that there was, in fact, an insult being given.

The background and gore-effects on this piece are really amateurish. It all just feels slapped together: The gore just looks like some simple brushes without any retouching to give it a 3-dimensional look. Meanwhile, the background and editing appears to be done by someone who doesn't have the knack for it- overexposed, white and bland, creating a poor color composition as it washes the models out. The oranges and blues would have been a nice contrast if explored further, but they're drowned out by earth tones and black. The planar decorative pieces feel completely out of place, and I'm not sure they make any sense with the room's layout, based on their perspective. The editing around some of the models is not stellar- there are some very clear spots where whoever was in charge of retouching may have confused blurring the edges with blending them into the environment. After taking the time to gather the models and take the picture (which is honestly, isn't terrible- not great, but it's at least a mildly accessible portrait) one would think that there would be some time and care invested in the post-editing.
