This is super cool. But just out of curiosity, and no one else has answered my questions when it comes to adopts. But really how are you supposed to charge for a design that someone can easily just take, and alter on their own without anyone knowing? Do these actually sell out for you?

Unfortunately, what you said applies for all art/characters posted on the internet. Adopt or not, anyone can steal and alter stuff.
I myself have purchased a couple adopts (anf some I then did nothing with *dies*), but I find it's just as "safe" as creating your own character and posting it online... except you get awesome premade art

Sorry; but I would like to try and explain my point of view on this. That’s called art theift. Yes theirs a risk for people to do that when making adoptables. But when artists take their time, and work hard to make unique characters to sell to people. We expect the same curtesy that people will have common sense, and not do that to people.

And yes; Matt’s adopts usually sell out to other people with time.

Oh I'm more than aware that its art theft. I'm also more than aware that these things happen without anyone knowing. But that's good, I'm glad it works out for him.

If they get found out for it , they can be done for copyright infringement in the court of law.. So if someone wants to take that risk by stealing a design rather than buying it, then that's on them. Even if you change the design to a degree, if it can be proven you were inspired or took parts of a design, you can still be done for it under creative rights.

I'll keep this short because I don't want to spam on this guy's awesome work, but no actually. There probably would be no copyright infringement. If someone took the same markings and design and altered it enough that it was a different species, under the creative commons law that's perfectly legal. There are perfectly remade copies of several Disney movies, and yet nothing they can do because it falls under the fair use act.

I too will keep this short. You need to look up the definition of Fair Rights in relation to Copyright. Good luck.

Fair use is a doctrine  in the law of the United States  that permits limited use of copyrighted material without having to first acquire permission from the copyright holder.

Which sounds a lot of what I said above. You can make alterations to something that's been posted online without permission.

That same article also states:
To prevent the private ownership of work that rightfully belongs in the public domain, facts and ideas are not protected by copyright   Publishing on to a site, like Deviantart is considered a public domain. So really even, the IDEA and concept of this character is not copyrighted.

I HAVE looked up the Fair rights act and the Creative commons law.
Is there something in particular that I've missed?

Yeah, the reason behind the alterations. You cannot just alter it because you feel like it, there needs to be a specified and or justified reason to do so. If that were the case, then everyone would just copy everything, everywhere all the time, and the law would be moot and wouldn't have a reason to exist, because everyone could claim Fair Rights. I'm not going to argue the point of it, though. No skin off my nose, but running around telling people they can do it without being at risk of prosecution is a naive thing to do.

Publishing an item onto the internet does not instantly revoke copyright - it is the opposite, in fact. I think you need to stop reading ambiguously between the lines and trying to make things fit your own perspective.

This would be a good reference point for you to start with.

But hey, you could always try it for yourself and find out the hard way.
