One jump. The creature thought, One jump and I could kill them.
It's three eyes blinked. The children were playing in the snow, throwing snowballs at each other and laughing. The park, besides them, was nearly deserted. It would be so easy for the white coated wolf creature to leap forward and have a feast. But something was holding him back.
Was it their innocence? No, he had killed many innocents before and had no guilt about it. So what was it? He cocked his head in thought. Perhaps because they reminded him of something, something he had long ago.... Happiness. Humanity. Sanity.
It made the wolf growl angrily. I am not those things anymore, He told himself, I am a monster. But his stubborn legs refused to leap. He exhaled heavily and turned away. Today the prey escapes me He thought Tomorrow, my quarry will not be so lucky.
He ran away, his heavy padded paws making no sound on the soft snow. All the while he kept thinking, Was I ever happy? Or is that simply another delusion of the mind? He silenced his thoughts and disappeared into the whiteness of the snow.
