Description

Some time ago I stumbled over a comic of this guy here ->

www.viciousprint.com/6commando…

As there was no precise worldmap yet I decided to make one of my own and tried my best as I could to make it fit to the scenario

First a brief description to the scenario.

It is an comic with an alternative history. The PoD is somehwere around the middle of WW I (here still called the Great war), where the US do not intervene and the war drags on until the mid 1920s where an uneasy truce is established between the Middle powers and Entente. Yet the Marxist revolution in Russia still happens, yet because the western powers in Europe were still at war with Germany and Austria-Hungary, they could do even less to stop the communists from spreading into Mongolia and China, and later into eastern and central Europe, where reborn Poland and the Austro-Hungarian monarchy would be the first victims. The first one would be incorporated into the FSR directly in 1929,because Polish forces resisted to fiercly, while the later one would be reformed into the Austro-Hungarian Federative People’s Democratic Republic.

Quote from the Official website of 6-Commando

'The state of the world in the year 1997 is unstable, at best. Early in the century, a Great War lasting over a decade bled the world white, and culminated in revolutionary bloodshed in Russia, China and Eastern Europe.  The great powers realized that a second direct confrontation of that kind would mean the end of civilization, and that the only answer was to establish a balance of power to forestall such a conflict for as long as possible.

Thus, three gigantic superblocs developed, divided by ideology and geography.  The UNA, an alliance of Western nations, calls itself the defender of the world’s Democratic ideals.  The FSR, a conglomerate of Socialist states, claims to be struggling for the liberation of the world’s underprivileged classes.  The Nonaligned Movement, dominated by the South American Coalition and the Arab League, is a loose confederation of states that claim to want no part of the Cold War.

Between these states lie areas of constant political and social upheaval called Disrecognized Zones.  In these areas, the three power blocs fight out their disputes by proxy, with little regard for the misery inflicted upon the hapless inhabitants of these perpetual warzones.  For eighty years, this has allowed the three alliances to defuse many political and ideological tensions, but recent developments threaten to upset this delicate balance of power.

Katanga, India, UNITA, and other newly-formed nation-states in Africa and Asia have grown weary of the constant devastation of their lands, and are starting to rise up and take their place as independent countries.  As their buffer zones shrink, the superstates are beginning to confront each other directly for the first time since the Great War, and the threat of all-out conflict on a truly global scale has suddenly become very real."

The Superpowers of this scenario

Quote from the Official website of 6-Commando

United Nations Alliance

The United Nations Alliance, often called the UNA or the Alliance, is a federation of thirty-four nations in North and Central America, Africa and Australasia.  The Alliance itself, if one considers it a single country, is a land frought with contradictions.  Though not all member-nations are actually democratic, the UNA nevertheless professes its adherence to and defense of the principles of liberal Democracy.  It claims to support the independence of “free peoples,” yet has engaged in wars across Africa, Asia and Europe to prevent countries from joining the FSR.  Its members fight to defend their sovereignty, but none have either the resources nor the inclination to exist without the United Nations’ support.  And above all, the UNA, collectively, has the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons on Earth, more than double all other nations combined, but its citizens live in a state of near-constant atomic paranoia.  The loss of the European continent during the Scarlet Revolution of the 1970’s was a severe blow to the UNA, and their military forces have been shrinking progressively for two decades, the result both of simple attrition and growing public disillusionment with the UNA cause.  This has pushed the UNA further down the path of technological development, producing ever more advanced weapons of war to span the gap in its burgeoning conflict with the FSR.

(from glossary) UNA (United Nations Alliance) [ALSO: U.N., the United Nations, Alliance, the Alliance; dem.: Alliance/Allied]: An alliance of thirty-four nations of North and Central America, the Caribbean, Africa and Australasia.  The current membership is not limited to democratic nations (Japan is an empire; Honduras, Cuba and Togo  are single-party states), but democratic reform has been made a requirement for new members, leading to accusations of hypocrisy and cultural hegemony against the Alliance’s founder-members.  The primary governing body is the General Assembly, but military policy is the responsibility of the Security Council, composed of permanent members Canada, Mexico, the United States, Australia and Cuba, with an additional six rotating members.  The UNA has positioned itself in opposition of the Federative Socialist Republic, and the two blocs are currently in a state of undeclared war.  The UNA does not possess nuclear weapons itself, but member-states Canada, the United States, Mexico, Australia, Cuba, Japan and South Africa are nuclear powers.

Federative Socialist Republic

The Marxist revolution in Russia wrote the final chapter of the Great War, and brought about the fall of the Russian Empire.  The exportation of the Russian Revolution, first to Poland and Austro-Hungary, then to China and the nations to its south, drastically altered the balance of world power, and catalyzed the creation of the United Nations Alliance to oppose the further spread of revolutionary Socialism.  The creation of the Federative Socialist Republic in 1929, coninciding with the start of the Great Depression, was the first sign that the world was careering violently out of control.  The FSR of today is seemingly even more powerful than ever, having gained access to enormous industrial and natural resources with the collapse of European Capitalism in the 1970’s.  However, though ostensibly mighty, the FSR is also socially and politically decadent, with a massive, shiftless totalitarian bureaucracy that dominates every aspect of its citizens’ lives.  It is an odd contradiction that within the FSR citizens are grumbling against the power of the State and looking longingly to the UNA for redress, while in the UNA, pro-FSR sentiment has never been stronger.  In spite of its massive military expenditures and expanded conscription, the Politburo still believes it is losing ground in the arms race, and is increasingly turning to its nuclear arsenal to deter what it has begun to see as an inevitable military showdown with the West.

(from glossary) FSR (Federative Socialist Republic) [ALSO: Republic, the Republic; dem.: Republican]: A nominally federal constitutional socialist state encompassing Russia, China and their neighbors, from the Ukraine to the Bering Strait, and south to Malaysia. The member states are theoretically voluntary members but they are effectively satellites of the Russo-Chinese industrial complex.  Western Europe has also been incorporated into the FSR as “allies,” held in place by Republican military force and political coercion.  The FSR is a nuclear power.

Powers of the non-alignement movement

South American Coalition

The South American Coalition, known by the portmanteau CONASUR, is a recent invention, and was the first of the new, self-created superstates to truly challenge what was previously a bipolar world order.  South America had long been tolerated as a land of independent, but ultimately insignificant nations with occasional pretensions to great power status.  The creation of CONASUR in 1948 was a major shock to the established world order, as it was immediately evident that the new state was fully capable of defending itself, and that it wanted no part in the confrontation between the UNA and the FSR.  Though CONASUR is looked up to by the people of the Disrecognized Zones as a sign of things to come, the nation itself prefers its relative isolation and has made no attempts to expand its influence beyond its borders.  The Coalition is, however, an inescapable fact of life for both the UNA and the FSR, and CONASUR observers are everywhere in the world, from embassies to police forces to military units in the field.  Even the FSR Central Committee was forced to admit a South American delegate to its most recent meeting, much to the consternation of the Politburo.  The South American Coalition gained even more clout with its first independent nuclear tests, and though exact numbers are not known, they are believed to be building a sizeable atomic arsenal.

(from glossary) CONASUR (South American Coalition) [SPANISH: Coalición de Naciones Suramericanas; ALSO: Coalition of the Southern Cone]: A superstate encompassing all of South America, plus Panama, with the exception of French Guyana (which is an overseas department of the French People’s Federative Socialist Republic).  CONASUR is the largest of the five primary neutral nations making up the “Nonaligned Movement,” refusing to become involved in the burgeoning political conflict between the FSR and the UNA.  CONASUR is an economic and military power in its own right and sends observers to both the UNA and the FSR to ensure that South American interests are not infringed

Arab League

Originally, the Arab League was formed under UNA sponsorship from the ruins of the Ottoman Empire, in the hopes of creating a friendly alliance which would secure a steady supply of oil and chemical resources, and keep the same out of Socialist hands.  By 1956, however, its commercial and industrial power had drastically outstripped that of its erstwhile sponsor.  Relations with the Alliance soured, and an abortive attempt by the FSR to sieze control was thwarted by unexpectedly tough League resistance.  All non-Arab influence was purged from the region, and all foreign military forces were systematically ejected from the Arabian Peninsula.  Today, the Arab League is almost a total enigma.  Unlike CONASUR, its nominal ally, the Arab League does not have any interest in foreign politics, and trades with both east and west through a massive and intricate network of middle men that ensure complete secrecy.  The actual state of affairs in Arabia and North Africa is anybody’s guess.  Rumors run the gamut from reports of a super-advanced and futuristic utopia to a near-Medieval Jihadist Caliphate, and eveything in between.  A recent attmpt by the FSR to retake Oman has met with very heavy resistance, and it is clear that, whatever else is going on in the Arab League, they have a military that is not to be trifled with.  Whether or not the Arab League has nuclear weapons is, of course, unknown, and the Arabs, true to form, are not talking.

Also, since there was no WW II, the two major superpowers have much larger armies and stockpiles of atomic-bombs than we ever had in our timeline. Also atomics, as fission nuclear weapons are called here, were developed much later than OTL, somwhere in the mid 60s as a Franco-German co-development and tested in the Namib-desert in Southern Africa. And there are no thermo-nuclear weapons...yet. But because there was never a single A-bomb used in anger, both sides have absolutely no idea what an attack with nuclear weapons would truly mean.

Also to mention here is the Scarlet Revolution

(from glossary) "SCARLET REVOLUTION: A series of popular uprisings in the mid-1970’s coinciding with widespread political subversion that caused the majority of Western Europe to fall into the FSR sphere.  Certain significantly pro-Western areas came under direct FSR military occupation, primarily Germany, France and Great Britain."

It can be described as a some sort of '68 movement, only that here the FSR helped a bit (lot) to topple the governemtns of the nations of Western europe and install FSR friendly governments.

In many casese this world is technologically ahead of our world. They have nuclear-battery-powered armor-suits, super tanks the size of a house powered by a nuclear reactor, called Rumblers and it is even run by a gel-based AI. Yet in other parts this world is backwardish.

Quote of a comment of

"I’m actually really pleased that you guys are thinking about the background – alternate history is a passion of mine. And you’ve basically hit it right on the nose, Seriann – in this world, technology has gone ahead in the military sphere because of constant but low-intensity warfare. But in other areas, the people of the 6-Commando world are profoundly backward as a reuslt of this limited form of imagination. For one thing, they have never developed atomics for any other purpose but weaponry – they have thousands of atomic bombs, but still burn coal and oil for fuel. A lot of things that don’t show up in the story are crucial later, as well: medical science is backwards, as is social and political progress. Education is geared very heavily towards military training, and engineering pursuits that benefit the arms race, while the humanities have suffered – especially political science and philosophy. Computer technology has only been applied to civilian life in very limited ways (personal computers exist but are very expensive and are purely data-oriented – so much for internet TV!), and most computers and software are kept as state military secrets. The most advanced country, in my imagination, is the Southern Coalition, which has developed a relatively peaceful society but managed to remain aloof from the international conflicts, but even they live an austere kind of existence compared to our own, one which would more readily tally to the United States in about 1960 in our world, comparatively speaking."

And there is no space industry what-so-ever. It is only discussed in theory, and only recently they tried to bring up some satellites and only one human was in space so far (a Canadian of course)

In between lie former nations and colonies where both superpowers fight proxy wars without end. Yet as more and more new nations manage to fil the void and disrecognized zones are disappearing every year, both super-powers are now looking face to face for the first time in decades...if you wanna see the consequences....you better watch the comic then.

----------------------------------------

As I said, I tried my to reproduce the worldmap fitting to the scenario. Yet I added some changes to the map and hope they would fit.

First thing I changed is that French Guyana is the capital of the French government in exile, even though 2/3 of the exiled French people live in the special administered zone of Quebec.

Second is that Japan intervened in China during the marxist revolution and conquerered vast parts of Manchuria and established itself up as a protector for the Asian people from the red hordes. Manchuria, Korea and Taiwan are all heavily fortified and armed to the teeth to prevent a possible conquest by the FSR.

Other changes include that Iran and India are also still existing, yet they are part of the non-alignement movement, and only recently established themselves as somewhat stronger powers on the world scene. India broke off the British Empire after the British Government fled to Canada and it is also a protector to Tibet.

As far as I understood it from the info the comic provided, yes.

And they are not the only one. Germany for example has their governments in exile in Quebec, while Italy has theirs in Africa

Quote from a comment from the comic:

"Thanks to the heroic efforts of the St. Vincent and St. Michael Brigades, the majority of Rome’s population, including the government, managed to secape south to Siracusa before the Red Brigades took the city (with covert assistance from FSR “volunteers.”).

Over the course of two months, the refugees were evacuated from Sicily by Canadian, American, British and loyal Italian naval forces, and a government in exile was eventually set up in Lagos with assistance and sponsorship from the Togolese and Nigerian governments."

I really think that created an awesome scenario here. ^^

Not bad. Not bad at all!

A few deviations from the official version but still. Indochine, Thailand and Malaysia are part of the UNA, for example. The Southern portions of New Mexico and Arizona are part of Mexico. The Republic of China exists, in a thin sliver along the southeast coast of Asia. Ethiopia is a part of the East African Disrecognized Zone.  And so forth.

But withal, pretty damn spot on! I love it, and I wholeheartedly approve!

Thankies for your comment. ^^ I really really tried my best here.

As for Malaysia, I thought it would be part of the FSR because it was mentioned in the glossary that it stretches that far south, and Indochine was colored red in both versions of the map that appeared in your comic so far. So that is why I colored it red here. ^^

And I cannot wait for your version to come out with some more detailed explanations. ^^ Really curious how Mexico gained a strip of the US here.

And thank you. I hope that I brought you some more watchers for your comic

Now I can start with a Fanfic of your work *winks and smirks*

The Mexico thing is not that it was broken off, but that it never happened. The Gadsden Purchase never occurred. In fact, a lot of the US is rearranged. There are 51 states, some of which, like Sequoyah, Pacifica, Gadsden, Ariza and Lincoln, you probably never heard of. The US in this world is only recently important internationally - it was previously neutral, isolated and pacifistic, largely agricultural country.

Oooooooh.

I really hope that you will give us a really, really detailed description of your world when your upload the real map. ^^ Really wanna know what differences there are and where the main PoD is here.
