Description
Wow, it’s been a freaking long time, something I regret. But alas, school dictates my schedule. Anyway, my computer was not exactly thrilled with this piece; at 9000X12000 pixels, it nearly exploded in a fiery fountain of mechanized death. I made it so large because I wanted it eligible for a 30” by 40” inch print, something no one will buy anyway….While it is relatively simple, I wanted to focus on the orchestration of the nebula, a result I very much like. This is the first nebula I crated without any textures whatsoever: completely 100% from scratch!
Without further ado, here is the planetary description:
Planet(s): Algoran
Capital: Varmier
Government: The New Earth Imperial Order
Sector Designation: Von Gayle District
District Designation: Realm of New Life
Population: 359,507,742
Description:
Algoran possess a rather high population of scientific minds, which primarily focus on an odd genus of bacteria that actively turns much of the polar hemispheric landmasses’ ice an odd teal-lime color. Though these bacteria are prevalent and easy to study, their metabolic processes still have not been entirely uncovered.
Other important lines of businesses on Algoran include a widely sought after school of business which centers on a bustling trade hub that monitors and tracks investments across many nearby systems. Military firms are also prevalent, manufacturing difficult to assemble weapons and gadgetry. Despite this, military presence is low and security is often rented out to private firms.
Algoran, possessing higher than average gravity, has limited prohibitive facilities, sending out small shipments to be accumulated and shipped out via secondary space ports on its four moons or many orbiting stations. Due to the nature of the low military presence and the hazard of space security, the secondary shipping facilities are lightly patrolled and guarded by poorly trained (sometimes volunteer) security personnel, often either new recruits with insufficient seniority for better posts or day to week workers.
The regional corporate headquarters of the Varigo Corporation is located in the capital city, Varmier, and is a popular choice of employer for many citizens with higher education. It also is a source of work for many immigrating to the planet, often for that explicit reason.
I truly hope you enjoy this one! As always, I welcome, love, and cherish comments,

Pretty cool. I also like the neat story behind it, almost like the background to an interesting video game or story.

It actually is a planet from a book I am writing
It wont be out for a while though as my publisher has me working on my fantasy line at the moment. Thanks for the comment!

I really like the back story behind this piece, I can tell you put a lot of thought into it! The nebula looks really nice, especially for your first one from scratch! The only thing I would recommend there would be to maybe dodge and burn it a little more to bring out some more highlights. Did you make that planet from scratch as well? It has amazing detail on it... the only thing bothering me about it is the glow. The glow seems to be coming from the wrong direction... it is around the shadowed part of the planet, which, realistically, wouldn't be the side glowing. The other beef I have with the glow is that it is a very saturated light blue, which doesn't match the planet or the nebula... I would maybe make it a darker blue, a pale yellow, or a pale red to match the nebula. I really recommend `dinyctis 's Planet Tutorial . If you've never used it before, it goes into great depth about texture and shadowing/glows on planets. I also recommend Greg Martin's Star Field Tutorial - which should help bring some more life into the background of your piece. Some of the stars around the nebula look really muddy, like they are behind the nebula layer, where some should be in front, to add more depth. Overall, you have a nice base for a piece, the composition is nice and the elements are nice, but there are some areas for improvement. Hope this helps!!

Thank you for the detailed comment; those are rare
The atmosphere is intended to be a bright blue as it contains a cyano-bioluminecent lifeforms; seeing my description, I see I failed to mention that X( If you look closely, the glow is pretty much equal on both the celestially illuminated and dark sides, the solar light just happens to wash the blue light. It also has wavering elements if you look very close, though that is far more apparent in the full size.
As far as the stars are concerned, I was experimenting with a new method, which, seeing as you noticed discrepancies, obviously failed. I, admittedly, did not put enough time into the star field; this whole piece took about four-ish hours and the star field regretfully suffered for it (It is essentially a triple basic with varying depth and 2.5k soft black brush). The tutorial you suggested is extraordinary; I would actually add a couple of things to it, but I assume everyone would and we all have our trade secrets XD.
The nebula was certainly an experiment and I am glad you like it; I can definitely see that it needs work. I will take your advice about the color dodge and burn; I have not used them before, so I would love to experiment.
