Description This is a big piece I donated for the "Art for Peace" festival here in Lethbridge, Alberta. Held in a local park downtown, the festival raises money and awareness about, generally, the world. Sitting here in our cushy houses, watching TV, making our pretty pictures, we forget about the kind of hardships that other people in the world have to live with everyday. Throughout the day at this festival there are poets, musicians, dramatists, and artists performing and displaying their work. Raffle tickets and t-shirts are sold as well as a silent auction for the artwork, all to raise money for charities (War Child was the charity this year). It's a really great event and I'm glad I was able to be a part of it.

Now, to explaining my piece here. The basic premise that I started with is that old dichotemy of peace and war, calm and chaos, quiet and loud etc etc etc. Filling in the bits with all the crazy designs is a big mish mash of ideas, shapes, lines and everything I could think. I deliberately made all of the ideas and references go all over the place to add to the chaos, confusion of what's going on in the black bits. It gets balanced by the order, calm, safety of the blank peace sign.

Among the designs there are ideas that are vacuous, without any real deep meaning, as well as ideas that (I hope) will turn on a few light bulbs and get you thinking. For example, there are a lot of references to video game icons and characters, band logos, song lyrics, famous quotes, math/physics formulas, religious symbols. Near the top I put in a couple parts of Picasso's Guernica, which I hope may inspire those who are familiar with that amazing piece to recall it's meaning. The top right section inside the piece sign has references to religion, lyrics and quotes about religion. Also at the top is a little shout out to a fantastic artist on here by the name of Si2. A huge shout out also goes to another member, nevermindless. Their work completely changed the way I think about and look at art.

Sorry for all the babbling. Thank you to those of you who read my whole explanation here.

Awesome! I love it!
Did you use a pencil to draft it?

Thank you! I used pencil to sketch the outline of the peace sign and the general shape of most of the main thick lines (sort of the skeleton of the piece). Filling in the whole thing, however, I just flew by the seat of my pants with no drafts or anything. Oh, and I also used a tape measure for the peace sign to get the placement and radius just right.
