I practised, and used references from time to time. (ref's are good 
And I took about an hour before I started just to think of where I was going at first.

Just do, to tell you the truth, half the time I'm making it up as I go, but with a main plot idea always in mind.

It's difficult to explain without giving away the plot, lol. But it involves monsters and magic, and mystery.
