Description
Thanks to my awesome boyfriend for helping me with the lighting effects.Might add background later, might not. It's just got a dark flat background for now to bring out the details more.
helped me discover new attributes about the fela flies as I was coloring this on photoshop. The fela flies are born non-elemental. They reflect a chosen element later that they have a preference for. Typically fela flies that are part of a specific colony choose their respective element, but this isn't 100% the case. They change elements in order to adapt to their respective environment. Some become love kittens, but this has only been shown to occur on Lumikios.
The following is a design concept sketch for my trade mark fantasy creatures, known as fela flies.
Design wise, I gave them dragon fly-like wings and ear tufts. They have very kitten-like features. The whiskers provide a dual purpose, they not only help fela flies navigate their world like a cat's whiskers, but they have the added hair like appendages like a moth's. They have an orb-shaped appendage on the tip of their tails that project light and energy that can glow a variety of colors. They create quite spectacular shows at night that are the envy of fire flies.
Here's the description I wrote up about them, including a quote from my novel project, Magicordia:
“Without the powerful elemental abilities of the fela flies, we would be unable to mimic the same flow of seasonal and weather patterns that old earth has. Whatever the creator set in motion at the beginning of time allowed for the sun to rise and fall, the moon to shine brightly at night, for the rain to fall and the seasons to change, cannot be replicated here. Thus, constant maintenance of this world is necessary. Fela flies summon the clouds in the sky, they raise the sun into the sky during day light hours and lower it and raise the moon at night to begin the evening. They leave most of the governing up to the dragons, preferring to remain behind the scenes, but they are just as important as the dragons themselves. If they stop their job, our world could fall out of balance. Some are tasked with sending and receiving messages. Amethyst is one of the few fela fly council members. She’s a very busy little cat.”
- Queen Khalru Lulana, Queen of the humans of Magicordia.
If fela flies could still be found in our world, scientists would be absolutely baffled by them. This of course, assuming the tiny creatures would allow us humans to get close enough to examine them. In a hypothetical scenario where the dna could be studied, our scientists would be absolutely floored.
So what are they, and how do they relate to the story book worlds involved in the parallel dual verse? As much as is known about the tiny creatures, there are even more questions that follow. Fela flies are as mysterious as they come, more mysterious than where purrs actually come from, although scientists do have some ideas.
Fela flies share 98% of the same dna as our beloved feline domestic companions. These tiny cat creatures no bigger than the largest of dragonflies, share the same amount of dna with cats as we do with chimpanzees. As most scientists are aware, even small changes in dna, the initial turning on and off of genes like little switches can make huge differences in genetic make up. But there's no denying that fela flies deserve to be classified as cats, for they share the same common ancestor as fluffy.
Yet what's truly baffling about the creatures is their size, being no bigger than the end of one's pinky finger on average, with long out stretched tails that can curl around objects to carry. They sport long, dragonfly-like wings. The hums of their wings sound just like purrs, and their appearance looks remarkably like a domestic cat, including the shape of their ears, their eyes, to their tiny paws and the claws they contain. They even have the same reflexes. They often pounce in the air before taking flight.
Like domestic cats, fela flies are obligate carnivores. However, due to their size they typically dine on insects. If they existed in our world, they'd actually be quite beneficial to us humans because they enjoy dining on mosquitoes, wasps and other insects we deem as pests. They will on occasion eat meat, as colonies could work together to swarm larger prey much like how lionesses work together to bring down a large animal for a pride.
Most fela flies live in colonies like domestic cats who have gone feral, and arguably like multi cat households. The social structure is similar in that queens help each other raise their kittens, but unlike domestic cats, fela flies developed mating pairs that mate for life. They have established courtship rituals that are accepted by both parties, and often have a ceremony similar to a wedding that bonds the two together. Male fela flies assist in caring for their young, often bringing food to pregnant and nursing fela flies and assist in teaching their young how to survive. The tiny cats will cuddle and groom each other. At night when fela flies are naturally most active, they will glow brilliant colors. These color patterns are one form of communication they have with each other. Some fela flies have developed the ability to use telepathy. Tail signals are another way of communicating left over from their ancestral link to cats and are often a signal of how the fela fly is feeling. They can also make the same sounds as domestic cats, purring, meowing and hissing and have retractable claws. In order to not mistake them for common fire flies, fela flies display an assortment of coloration. Their retinas have evolved to be able to switch between the same kind of vision cats have, and more human-like vision where they can see a wider variety of colors in the day time. Although naturally nocturnal, some have adapted to a diurnal lifestyle.
In every world, fela flies tend to congregate near their ideal element. Fire fela flies tend to gather in hot places, such as on islands near volcano, and some prefer the sandy deserts. Water fela flies have an affinity for lakes, streams, and ponds. Earth fela flies prefer the cool earth underground. Wind fela flies enjoy high mountain elevations where the wind blows freely and tend to be the best fliers. Ice fela flies enjoy the cold and have adapted thick whitish silver fur coats and smaller ears and live in arctic areas. Without as many insects, some arctic fela flies will band together to catch fish, jumping into freezing cold water and taking on a single fish as bees swarm a nest. Forest fela flies enjoy the deep rich forests and live in trees and bushes.
On Lumikios, two closely related species exist that are exclusive to that planet and the magic there. One is the love kitten, who behaves in much the same manner as a fela fly, but are attracted to two lumikians in love rather than gathering around a specific element. They likely diverged from a type of forest fela fly. There's also the dangerous fela fly like fela hornets, who are dangerously aggressive and adapted painful stingers on their tails that can paralyze even the largest of enemies. Fela hornets may appear like fela flies, but have the hornet-like stripes and behave more like the insects they are named after.
Fela flies serve similar functions on Lumikios and Ark'eth as messengers between individuals in those respective worlds.
In Magicordia, the tiny cats are primarily responsible for the maintenance of that world and will do so in shifts, allowing periods of rest in between, as well as family time and time to bond with kittens and other family members. Often older members of the colony look after kittens when mated pairs are performing their duties.
The magic knowledge of these tiny creatures caught the attention of dragons. Legend has it a long time ago, before Magicordia was created, a single fela fly challenged a dragon to a magical dual. The dragon laughed, underestimating the tiny creature who would have been the size of a flea to the mighty synapsid and nearly turned the fela fly down. The tiny winged cat reminded the dragon that his honor was at stake if he didn't accept the challenge, the cat would go out and spread the message that dragons were afraid of tiny creatures like themselves. Now angry, the dragon accepted the challenge.
It was a grand dual, attracting the attention of animals from around the world of Old Earth. Most of them believed the dragon would have no problem swatting a tiny little cat creature, but the fela fly surprised them all. The dual ended with the dragon knocked backwards into a mountain crushing the peak and a triumphant fela fly. From then on, dragon kind respected the cat creatures, and they earned a place as one of the most powerful magic users of all.
So far, this is all that's known about fela flies. As we journey into the fantastic worlds they choose to appear in, we may learn more. Or...we may have more questions about them and where they came from.
