Description

The Room of Requirement was more full than ever. Now almost as large as the Great Hall, it had a reflective surface on every wall which many young wizards and witches were appraising their own technique in, and padded floors which the students constantly full onto as they practiced offensive and defensive charms far beyond what would be expected of their year group.

But it wasn't just current students in the Room. Dumbledore's Army had called for ex-students and friends to join them through a secret passage in the Hog's Head. Cho Chang was one of the many who had answered the call. But as she was marveling at the new scope and span of what was once a ragtag group of less than fourty students, she had already been cornered by a pair of fourth-years.

She had only appeared in one spread of Tornados trainees. But that had clearly already become some sort of deep folklore in the Ravenclaw Quidditch team (and apparently they didn't have much else to do but gossip after Snape had suspended the league). But she didn't really mind answering endless questions from over-excited teenagers. The alternative would be to step into the dueling ring with people like Ernest Macmillan who had been training in the Army for years now. Cho had barely cast a spell in the last year if it wasn't to summon her broom! She was living in muggle apartments after all to avoid He Who Must Not Be Named's forces, and apparating to practice where they didn't have time to practice any of this sort of stuff.

As half her brain easily dealt with answering ever more queries from her fans, the other half occupied itself with scanning the room for any familiar face from the DA of her sixth year. Neville was well across the room, a lot fitter than before and apparently able to hold his own against three duelists at once. Ginny was also far away, taking some tiny (maybe even first-years!) students through the motions of her famous Bat Bogey Hex.

Then a strangely familiar voice drifted its way over to her from behind.

"Oh, Cho Chang. I'm really happy you could make it. But you must be nervous..." Something was so familiar about that voice, but she couldn't place it. But as she turned around... "You're surrounded by wrackspurts, after all".

She was no longer surprised to see a slightly gaunt, pale figure in Ravenclaw robes, with wild straw-coloured hair held together with pencils, spoons and chopsticks. Cho could only slightly suppress her sigh. She had never really talked to Loony Lovegood, but she had heard enough in the common room. Was she really good enough at Charms and DADA to be teaching people? For a war against You-Know-Who?

But even Cho's thoughts couldn't keep up their indignance for long, and she returned Luna's concerned look with a warm smile. As wacky as she was, Luna was already proving herself a strangely calming influence. Maybe it helped that she was so... airy-fairy.

But, yes, Luna being around was definitely a good thing. Her ethereal presence definitely reduced the tension. Cho didn't realise how stiff her shoulders were until she felt how relaxed they were now. And if nothing else, Luna had a lot of recent experience. She would be a perfect training partner. Cho nodded to herself with resolution. It was time to get over her fear and learn how to fight the Death Eaters that they all knew were coming. She turned to the fourth-years who currently eyed Luna with a combination of bemusement as admiration that only a Lovegood could elicit.

"Girls, it's been lovely to chat, but I'm here to fight too. Can you leave me for now?"

The two girls nodded and ran off back to their group that was learning the Shield Charm from Michael Corner. And Cho turned back to Luna, whose huge blue eyes were now inches away from her face.

"L-Luna?"

The blonde girl just stood there staring, anyone would say she was petrified, until she finally blinked.

"Sorry Cho, you really do have a massive wrackspurt infestation..." Luna's odd smile didn't reassure Cho of her competence, but did at least let the older witch feel like everything was going to be alright. If Luna could afford to keep up her nonsense, she could afford the time to get back into the swing of spellcasting.

"Maybe you should try a Patronus Charm? That might help fend off the wrackspurts..." Luna was wrong about the wrackspurts but... "Harry taught you how to do it, didn't he?"

Of course she would bring it up. Yes, she had learned the protective Patronus spell from her second boyfriend. Two years ago. It was probably a mistake to get too close to him, but she had needed something after Cedric. And he was there, and kind, and warm...

In a way, she supposed, Luna was similar, going through the motions with her in a time of stress. A stabilising influence. If Luna noticed Cho's sad smile as she raised her wand, the mysterious witch did not mention it.

Cho knew how to conjure a Patronus. Focus on your purest memory of happy times. Of safety, security. Lots of things which you couldn't really feel in a Britain under You-Know-Who's thumb.

She wasn't even sure what her happiest memory was. Graduating Hogwarts was too bittersweet as it quickly became clear Harry was right about, well, everything. Finally beating Slytherin in her final year was pretty good, but it wasn't life-affirming. Getting the letter from Hogwarts? Maybe. The kiss in this very room... No, definitely not, why would she even think that?

"Expecto Patronum" Her mouth said, strained and quiet. Instead of a splendid corporeal swan, all that emerged from her wand was a mist of silvery wisps which dissolved into the tense air of the Room within seconds.

"Oh dear... You'll never defend yourself against wrackspurts with that, much less any Unforgivable Curses..." One of the better qualities of someone as spacey as Luna was that she didn't sugarcoat things. Cho shook her head in despair, Luna was right. Without the moat powerful defensive charm available to them, Cho would be helpless out there...

Luna's hand rested on Cho's shoulder before the older witch could speak. "You're too nervous, Cho, you need to relax a bit."

She was right, and they were both Ravenclaws, after all. If these two witches couldn't put aside their fear and anxiety about the state of the world and cast a spell correctly, what hope did the Wizarding World really have? Cho waited a few moments, steadying her breathing (her parents would say something about qi, but they weren't formally educated like she was). Her mind cleared of worry, she started again to try to summon a memory. Her first broomstick ride. The feeling of the wind through her hair. The biting cold of the high air. Her mother smiling beside her.

Her mother who was in mortal danger right now, just like every other witch who didn't follow the Death Eaters.

Again, impotent wisps were all her wand produced, rather than a shining guardian.

Luna's strangely airy, but calming, presence meant the fear wasn't making her hands shake and her lips quiver. But it did nothing to help her focus. The danger of the situation was just too salient in the halls of her old school where all this trouble seemed to have begun. Cho recoiled from Luna's pale hand, her body almost curling in on itself as she pouted in frustration.

The blonde witch's dreamy expression had changed to something almost serious. At least, there was definitely a crease of concern in her forehead. "Cho, you won't be able to protect yourself without a Patronus. You need to be able to if you're going to help in the War. The Death Eaters will use the Unforgivable Curses without a second thought."

Cho shifted uncomfortably, one arm cradling the other as Luna's words sunk in. She was right. Without defence against the Cruciatus Curse, Cho could be made a helpless wreck on the battlefield. And even worse, what about the Imperius Curse? She could end up being turned into a tool used against her friends and allies. A prisoner in her own body, turned to the service of He Who Must Not Be Named. It was unthinkably terrifying. She needed a defence. She would never let herself be so helpless and vulnerable.

Her voice, quieter than ever before, squeaked. "Please... Please Luna, help me."

Through misty eyes Cho thought she saw an almost excited smile on Luna's face. And once a pale hand had wiped away her fearful tears, Cho saw the other witch's eyes seemingly sparkling with energy. Luna took one of her elder's hands in two of her own, bringing it up to her chest. Her eyes fixed on Cho's with an odd seriousness. With a powerful, strange conviction.

She spoke with a voice which was more present than she'd ever heard from Loony Lovegood. "I used to be scared too, Cho. Trust me, people think that I just don't notice things. But I notice more than they do, and none of it makes the world look any safer." She shook her head for a moment, blonde curls falling this way and that. "But I discovered something. While I was playing with my Gnargle-detecting goggles, I somehow found a new Patronus. It's more powerful, and it makes me feel so, so safe."

Luna glanced across the room for a moment. Cho followed her gaze to see a redheaded witch in red and gold robes. Ginny Weasley. Despite their obvious connection, Cho couldn't help but admire the witch as she exuded confidence.

"I showed it to Ginny too, so I'm sure it's entirely safe."

Cho giggled, just like Luna to add a safety warning to a Patronus. But Luna looked serious, so Cho's face hardened as well. She stole another glance at Ginny, an image of competence and self-assurance in the middle of the chaos.

If it's good enough for the girl who Harry chose, it's good enough for me.

Cho's head bobbed in a forceful nod as she locked eyes with Luna. "Okay. Please can you show me?"

Luna practically glowed with excitement as she bounced a few steps away from Cho. "I need the space to cast it" Luna explained unhelpfully. What is this actually going to be? Cho wondered, a bit too late. Despite that, Luna's constant aura of slightly-zany calm definitely affected Cho. Her breathing was slow and steady now, and her worry-lined face had a shallow smile gracing it.

The older witch didn't notice, but around them the Room had started to change. Thick vines had been growing from the wooden beams above them throughout the conversation. Now they finished interweaving and cut the pair off almost completely from the rest of the students and volunteers.

"Exxxpecto Patronum" Luna intoned. Cho couldn't tell, but it almost sounded like she had hissed as she case the spell. Oh well, she thought. It wouldn't be too surprising if Luna was randomly also a Parselmouth. Instead she concerned herself with looking at the result of Luna's spell.

Silver light filled the room, but it was tinged with a rainbow of colours. Green, yellow, blue, Cho could see all of them. And then out of the light, a shape took form. A huge serpent, even taller than Cho as it reared up its head. A tongue flicked out of its mouth as it lowered to 'look' at the witch, its silver eyes settling on her plainly.

Cho took two steps back involuntarily, her breath coming quicker now. A snake Patronus... isn't that what You-Know-Who had? Her chest heaved up and down as she backed up towards the wall.

But suddenly Luna was beside her, taking her hand again. As the young witch squeezed, she felt her heartbeat return to normal. Her breath softened. The snake-Patronus slithered its way towards her without a sound, gliding across the floor as its silver body pulsed with colour.

"Just let it happen, Cho. I promise it will help you feel better. Relax."

She at least suppressed her instinct to walk backwards as the Patronus soundlessly slithered its way towards her. Its eyes were so close to her now. And the colours of the rainbow kept shifting through. They appeared and disappeared quickly. Washing through the silver. Pouring through it like waves. Pulsing and predictable. Green... yellow... blue... the pattern repeated. Cho understood the pattern...

But not why...

Not why it felt good to watch it... why the colours were eliciting a lump in her chest... a dryness in her throat. Her mouth opened involuntarily.

Drool laced down her chin.

But her weightless arm wouldn't move to wipe it. InsteadΒ  she felt Luna's warm touch stroke her chin.

That too sent a pulse of something through Cho's body. Her breathing sped up for a moment.

Which wasn't good. She needed to relax. She needed to learn. So she let herself fall deeper into the colours, and as she thought her breathing slowed even as her body continued to react strangely.

Even her thoughts relaxed. They kept drifting into daydream. Memories of Quidditch, of the DA. Of that kiss at Christmas in Sixth year.

But in her dream, as she kissed Harry a snake's tongue entered her mouth. But she didn't recoil. She stared into his beautiful colourful eyes and kissed back, letting herself be seduced by it.

She felt the embrace of the semi-solid Patornus around her. Even without looking, she knew the snake's coils had started to engulf her. But they were soft, like her bed in Hogwarts. Like a bed... that she could sink into... and sleep... sleep and dream of the coloursss...

She shook her head slowly. Noo... I need... to do sssomething... before... sssleep

Through a rainbow mist, her thoughts finally slogged their way to memory. Even as her body relaxed and let itself fall into the coils, her mind finally latched onto something. I ssstill... have to learn...

Harry had told her a bit about Occulumency. Not the wonderful dream-Harry, but the real one. It was a way to close one's mind. But now, in the midst of the coils, she found it even easier to do the reverse. She didn't need to (and couldn't anyway) concentrate. She simply unlocked something within. Some last piece of resistance against the Patronus.

The misty rain clouding her mind faded as it was filled with wondrous colour and silver coils. The smile on her face spread to a silly grin, as her body filled with elation. All the while, her mind filled with the knowledge she needed.

She learned how she could conjure the Patronus by remembering the colours and the amazing feeling of its coils.

She realised how she needed to act, like Luna had, to make them vulnerable and trapped. To make sure they looked into its all-powerful eyes for long enough to appreciate it.

And above all her mind become saturated with the urge to make it happen. Because others needed to become like her.

Obedient, to the Patronus and to its conjurer.

As it all started to fade into rainbow mist again, Cho pieced it together. From the beginning, she was starting to fall into hypnotic trance. And when Luna conjured the Patronus, it fully hypnotised her, and now it was conditioning her and making her into a useful tool for it.

But she didn't mind, because Luna was right, she needed this. To fight the Death Eaters. She could protect herself now. And they, too, would learn.

If she had learned Occulumency properly from Harry, maybe this wouldn't have happened.

But as her real and mental eyes drifted closed, she nodded in agreement with herself. She didn't mind. She wanted to be hypnotised and obedient.

She fell asleep in the coils. And as they faded into mist, the last thing Cho felt was Luna's welcoming embrace.

So in case any of you thought the nerdy British girl wasn't also Potter trash, I made this! ;D

To note, Katie Leung was over 18 when this film was made, and the story features an adult Cho, so ignore that the image has her as a 6th year!

**Changed the image because while I am personally pretty confident it was from an Order of the Phoenix promo thingy or something, I couldn't prove it and cba defending it when I have this slightly lower quality but arguably better fitting image that I definitely remember from OotP**

An excellent story, as always. Picturing present day Evanna Lynch in the story made it just that much better for me. Β

Incredible story as per usual, and I loved the tiny little detail about how hot Matthew Lewis has got

I don’t know if this was intentional (or even if it’s anything beyond me simply being fanciful), but I also like how it calls into question the nature of the meeting itself. After all, it seems odd that none of the students that they’re teaching would notice any of this, and almost too convenient that Ginny was in such close proximity. So I have to wonder if Luna β€˜required’ a baited trap in which to catch Cho?

In my head, the DA meeting is very real, but the Room is responding to Luna and closing the pair off and making the conditions perfect for a hypnosis (let's say Luna was the one who started the session!)
