Description

The curly-haired vision of beauty was laughing. At him. She thought she was laughing with him, which soothed the pain a little bit, but Umleit couldn't help but see a bit of red at this clear insult to his supervillainy.

"Hahaha! 'Wholesale cognitive alteration'? Come on, we're not in Westworld here, Doc. You can tell me what you're actually researching."

A bit of wine stained the floor of the conference room where Umleit had met the woman named Tatiana. He didn't need to worry about that, but he was concerned by the dismissal he had just received. He was hoping to lure her into a more, well, interesting situation than simply polite conversation at a post-conference drinks.

He cleared his throat. "Perhaps I simply phrased it poorly, but I assure you it was not a jest. Perhaps if I knew what your area of research was, I could adapt my explanation to match your understanding." He grinned, that was a satisfactory save, he might get another fun evening out of this yet.

She smirked at him as she took another sip of the Merlot. Umleit himself simply held a glass of elderflower juice, not wanting to subject himself to whatever swill the organisers had procured from the local supermarket the night before.

"Well, you remember the second talk on social representations in media about robots?"

"Ahh, yes, the gentleman from Toronto was presenting, I believe?"

"Yep! He's my PI, I work on similar stuff. You know, how people's perceptions and mental models of things are affected by the overarching societal view, and how different representations compete in the social consciousness."

Umleit suppressed a sigh. He was hoping for an engaging discussion in the fail case when he approached this remarkable woman. Instead he might have to endure a wishy-washy lecture on "schema" and other unfalsifiable crap that the disciples of Muscovici loved to push as the next wave in the understanding of human thought. Umleit preferred the more direct, experimental approach to ethnography. But there was no need to scoff at the woman yet, he hadn't even sprung the trap.

"Ahh, I see, a fascinating field, I must say. Though I was more interested in the later talks from the behavioural economists."

"Ahh, the Nudge guys?"

"Yes. You see, my research is similar to yours in that it concerns the ways that humans think about things, and especially people, can be changed."

"People? Well, yes, social representations can affect how you perceive groups in many ways, and media plays a huge part in that, but I'm not sure if it can be generalised on an individual level."

"Yes, yes. Because you work on the societal plane, but I prefer looking specifically at the individual."

Another sip of wine. "Well, we do think of the individual to. Without the individual's engagement social representations can't form, and they are meaningless without an effect on the individual - we just focus on the aggregate. The same can be said of the Nudge people, don't you agree?"

"Agreed. In fact, I believe it to be a weakness. While I admire the directness of their approach-"

"You mean on specific interventions?"

"Exactly, I do much prefer investigating prescription than description, if you don't mind me saying..."

"Of course not, though I think you underestimate how helpful understanding the way media can influence society is." She giggled, there was clearly a nerve there, but he had been careful not to strike it. She was still engaged, eye contact and all. Just as he required.

"Perhaps, but anyway, I believe that while population-level analysis is helpful statistically, it actually makes interventions work. It can miss the individual differences which can affect, well, I suppose you would say susceptibility to cognitive change."

She was nodding along, good, he took another sip.

"But if you test your interventions in specific case studies, you can understand the effects holisitically, and also any reasons for negative responses. This means you can continue to hone the intervention. Yes, it does take longer - which is why I understand researchers in politically charged areas avoid the method, but you cannot doubt the effectiveness."

"Really, so you've had results? No offence, but I didn't hear the name Umleit come up in their references."

"None taken, Tatiana. I have yet to get any high impact publications, but that is because I am still refining my more high impact methods. Plus, there are certain journals I have a particular fondness for."

"Fondness? That's an admirable loyalty if you're scuppering your career."

At least he didn't have to mention the name of the Journal of Mental Manipulation in Supervillainy after that ill-advised slip. "My lady, I am far more devoted to advancing cognitive science than my own paycheck!" He made a mock gallant gesture and earned another real laugh. He wasn't joking though. Umleit was nothing if not a man of scientific discovery. Besides, the rewards he got were better than a comfy fellowship by any calculus (especially Bentham's, he chuckled to himself).

"So, Umleit, you still haven't actually explained what your interventions do. From the sounds of it they're more exciting than aiming drunks' piss off the toilet floor?" That had been an amusing example from the behavioural economists. But rather than remark on that, this was his chance.

"Well, if you're truly interested, Tatiana, why don't we take a seat?"

And then he was following the poor, trusting woman to the windowsill. She hadn't even waited for him to explain what the "intervention" would do! Never mind that, he supposed, she may be easily tricked but she was clearly capable of being a helpful asset in any role he put her to.

Despite that, deep instincts within him that he usually knew to best avoid when in conflict with superheroines were rising to the surface. Yes, maybe he would indulge himself this time.

"Are you aware of the concept of the Joint Attention Mechanism?" He explained patiently to Tatiana, who sat demurely on the platform at the edge of the congregation, her perfect hair framing an all-too-naive face.

"Erm, that's the gaze perception thing, right? I wasn't aware people were still talking about it?"

"It comes and goes, but I'm not talking about child development. Well, not necessarily. The premise of Joint Attention is that neonates and young children base their learning on what they see others looking at - essentially they get their information from looking into people's eyes. On a reductive level, you can say they base their world view on trust in adults' eyes."

"Okay, sure, there's some logic there. But, I don't get how that links to, well, any intervention at all?" Umleit didn't hold it against her, it would be very hard to guess the theory a priori.

"Basically, I don't see any evidence to suggest that mechanism does not lie dormant in adulthood. Hence, a strong enough gaze from another adult should have the ability to affect one's perception of things. I believe this is particularly salient in the domain of trust. Hence, the intervention is based on the use of the 'hypnotic gaze'-"

"We're back in sci-fi land here, Umleit." She was laughing though, not fighting back. All entirely within reasonable parameters.

"I am serious in this case. Hypnotists have long observed that fixing a susceptible person with a strong gaze is enough to make them, in layman's terms, 'shut down' slightly. If it can do that, then perhaps a different application of gaze can cause a change in decision making and learning - so goes the theory. I am particularly curious about the other component of the model, though. It would seem willpower is a clear variable. But almost impossible to operationalise. Hence my continued study, I am trying to understand both how to quantify willpower, and exactly how it affects the process."

"And what do you feel about yours?" She teased.

"Honestly, the only thing I am sure about in that area is that my own willpower is peerless - based on all previous participants of course." Not that this adorable but entirely too gullible woman was likely to be a greater challenge than previous conquests.

"Well we'll see how I do, I suppose! Also, I guess this is a demonstration - so what's our dependent variable?"

"Well I can see you are still not convinced by my theory, so how about I attempt to increase your trust in my model and intervention. If it works, then it is self-fulfilling, correct?" He wasn't exactly lying with that goal, so it was far easier for him than normal to use dishonesty. He did fear that his standard over-explanation of his scheme may not work so well on a woman who wasn't already influenced by one of his other concoctions.

"Sure, let's go with that. So what, I just look into your eyes and you work your magic?" She winked playfully again. She still wasn't taking it seriously. But in this case, that was still what he needed. He had been holding her gaze the entire conversation, conditioning her to expect certain things from his eyes. Now it was time to change.

In a practiced technique he still did not entirely understand, he poured his willpower into his eyes. He always did have a piercing gaze, anyone would agree, but now it would bore down into her will. Her mouth had already parted in a way entirely expected for a hypnosis gaze subject.

Emboldened, he moved on to the next part, the one he hadn't explained to poor Tatiana, the verbal induction.

"My eyes have you transfixed, don't they? You can't possibly look away?"

"Errm... N-noo..." She slurred over her words, her motor control already impaired in the hypnotic effect psychologists had been failing to understand for years. This wasn't where willpower came in, it was basically a binary variable whether someone exhibits the response. The will would come later, in how her brain interpreted his words.

"That's because they are everything. Everything you can see, there is nothing else, you understand? You can see only my eyes." He had to say the words carefully, confidently. She had to believe the words, and he had no other technological or medical assistance. His control was entirely based on how much she trusted the words. He had every advantage of course, she was a captive audience, but she still had to accept his power on a deep level.

"Yeah... All I can see... Is those eyes... so much... so..." She was trailing off already, ready to understand his power. Her face had already fallen from a playful grin to a thin, compliant smile. She really was in an alluring, compromised position. But Umleit was nothing if not disciplined (for a time, at least), so he kept his focus, even if it was incredibly easy. He had chosen a good target for testing his riskiest form of hypnosis. Even without relying on his usual drugs, he had the upper hand.

"And why can you only see them? I explained it to you. It's because you trust them. You trust me. You will let my eyes guide you. That means letting me guide you. Just stare, stare deeper."

"Just... Stare... Yep... I'll let you guide me... I need guidance... I trust you..."

Her eyes were fully open now, intensely staring into his. They were a beautiful pair she had. Yes, so clear and full of purpose. Those were a pair of eyes he could trust. A pair he could let himself look into for hours...

Umleit licked his lips. Impressive, she might be completely 'under' but her will was still strong enough to combine with her beauty to put him into the first stage of hypnosis. A fascinating woman, but also a warning to him. He needed to act fast to bring her to a point where her will would be consumed. Even if there was still resistance, he wanted it to be against his control, instead of trying to exert control of her own (knowingly or not).

"You understand now, my dear Tatiana. My eyes are what you trust, my voice has changed what you trust. My voice will change your internal perceptions. It will make you believe what I want you to believe. You will let it happen because you are trapped by my gaze and trust it."

She was nodding along and making noises of assent. Now for the move he knew was all or nothing. Experiments in obedience as far back as Milgram showed that this phrase could cause an instant increase in defiance and break whatever 'spell' was working (now he thought of it, perhaps this method only worked from a figure seen as an authority?). But against a subverted will, said with enough conviction, this was the final piece of the puzzle. This final push would throw Tatiana over the edge into true trance.

"You are helpless to resist."

Tatiana had been really enjoying the experience. Almost instantly upon meeting Umleit's gaze her brain had gotten a bit fuzzy. Thoughts were coming to her in weird, distorted spurts. They were still fully her thoughts, not even slightly influenced by him, but they were hard to get out. Even when she agreed with him, her mouth couldn't articulate herself easily.

So when he'd correctly assumed that she totally trusted those eyes, she had mumbled along.

And so she had only just noticed that her mumbles were agreeing with the idea that he could change her. She still didn't believe that. This was a cool party trick, and she did definitely like staring into those handsome eyes. But, come on, there was no way her actual beliefs would change there.

But she was still saying it. Maybe parts of her subconscious did agree?

That would make sense, social representations often work in the subconscious as well as actually noticeably changing one's schema.

But it was still ridiculous. She was a bit embarrassed that she couldn't talk or even begin to look away from those eyes, but it was still thoroughly unbelievable.

"You are helpless to resist."

He said that, though. And her brain accepted it as true.

She gasped. Was it a gasp of release as her brain stopped the efforts it now knew was futile? Or disbelief that she could even begin to believe this model?

Either way she had gasped and her brain had got fuzzier.

There was a good part, though, she understood how it worked. Despite the fuzziness of every other thought, her analytical brain now realised the truth of the method with perfect clarity. Through a mix of raw charisma and psychological tricks to make her see him as an authority figure, Umleit had started to activate a decision pathway of unquestioning obedience. But authority only works in specific areas, so it was good that he could only make her believe his theory.

As she thought that she heard her own voice say, in a strange blank drawl.

"Yes... I believe your theory... You can change my mind... With your gaze... I trust and believe..."

See, that was right.

But he wasn't releasing her from the trance.

Oh, God. That was where trust came in.

Since she trusted him, he could transfer the effect of him being an authority figure to every domain. He would make her believe whatever he wanted. And she would go along with it. Just as she was literally saying right now.

To stop that, she had to resist.

But he had just told her that she shouldn't resist. That she didn't even want to.

And it was right. She trusted Umleit too much.

He knew better about what she should be thinking than she did herself. She should let him take control.

"I... I should obey you..."

That made sense, he had made the part of her brain which resisted orders (whatever that was) shut down in the same way more general functions were inhibited by the gaze. It was simply too late to fight back against the shroud of control falling over her mind.

All along, some part of her did want to submit to a strong, powerful man. And now that was the only part working. Now there was only one thing she could do.

"I... I must obey you..."

She knew what to do and she didn't even want to resist the command.

"I will do and act exactly as you say. I am obedient and hypnotised."

Her voice was no longer uncertain, her brain had been completely turned into an obedient state. No need to inhibit it when the resisting part was just not active.

She could finally blink, not that she didn't enjoy just staring.

But she was now being rewritten. She didn't mind, Master Umleit knew best (she called him Master now).

She smiled contentedly as she was informed that she would now be a sex slave.

She gave her assent when he gave her the triggers she would need to function in society while still praising him as her Master and reverting to his plaything every night.

She licked her lips as he explained in detail just what she was going to do to him.

Tatiana trusted him, so she knew she would love sucking just as much as he would love being sucked. She was going to be such a good slave pet for her Master. She had been foolish to ever believe he would not take complete control over her thoughts and body. She was foolish to think she could resist his overwhelming eyes.

A request from wujeeboy which I was all-too-happy to oblige given the amazing image here! (Hey, it even has feet for that section of my audience ;D)

I like to bring back Dr. Umleit from time to time to explore how real psychology can be pseudoscientifically twisted into real-feeling hypnosis. This time I've gone a bit further away from things I actually know about, but hopefully it still came off as believable!

Your long-form inductions are absolutely peerless. And that psycho-social scientific jargon really helps it feel more grounded--it's a little odd to ask for realism from fantasy, but you deliver it and it's marvelous.

The inherent mental "retcon" could be twisted and taken advantage of in some way--seeing something and justifying it as having always been there, been right, been true...

It could be used as a way to hide subliminals, sort of; though my understanding is that the eyes aren't transmitting any information during that period rather than just not processing it consciously.

Then there's the similar mental process of automatically flipping the image received (which one can train to reverse). So, some kind of way to force a perspective conducive to enslavement?

Just a couple ideas. I don't know, you're a lot more knowledgeable on all this. Maybe it'd work, maybe it wouldn't.
