Wow...this just gets more and more interesting! Of all the various confrontations going down here, I never would have guessed that Pinkie would be the one in the best situation overall. And Rarity, oh my, between Spike and Applejack somebody needs to save her (my money's on Applejack. Spike would do it in a heartbeat, but I'm betting he's too far away). And Fluttershy telling off Rainbow...excellent! I can't wait to see what happens next.

Well, we appear to have reached the end of Chapter 4.  I'm so used to the party increasing at least once per chapter that I almost expected Applejack or Rainbow to join the team.

Anyway, this chapter's been an emotional rollercoaster.  Rainbow almost choked Twilight to death, Applejack and Rainbow's fight, the Shadowbolts kidnapping Rainbow and getting her to run towards the barricade of town where she'd be no longer safe to Luna's influence, Haze curbstomping Applejack without even throwing, Fluttershy attempting to repair her friendship with Rainbow, and a battle between the Elements and the Shadowbolts... who have more than held their own.  This chapter really shows that it's going to be far from easy to save the world if other beings with magic are out there capable of fighting you at or beyond your level.

Pinkie's flirting under fire here is just plain awesome.  But I really like how you elude to her having a tragic past here... was she deliberately lying as a distraction or does she not want to remember?  The rest of the Elements, whether through flashback or through telling us, have eluded to some sort of back-story that made them realize their Element.  Twilight's older siblings have left her and her foster brother and her sister has been forced to keep out of the city for a year while she fights the rest of Discord's monsters and keeps up with her adventurer archeologist lifestyle. Rarity had been an implied rich alpha bitch back in her earlier life until her mother needed a blood transfusion and a homeless man who had her mother's blood willingly donated some of his, making her realize generosity and volunteers in a soup kitchen on a regular basis.  Fluttershy had been manipulated before and Rainbow even said Fluttershy was once suicidal, but yet is still a kind girl who volunteers at the animal shelter and takes care of animals.  Meanwhile Rainbow herself had been forced to leave Gilda halfway across the world, and has loyalties to Fluttershy and Soarin... to the point that when Fluttershy finds herself additional friends, she feels so betrayed.  Meanwhile, Applejack is heavily implied to have lost family members, and keeps to herself, yet she tells Fluttershy, with blunt honesty, that if she can't take care of herself she'd be a burden to others around her.  So what's made Pinkie in this world so cheery, almost like she's so desperate to have fun that she finds getting into dangerous situations like this a good way to pass time?

Haze is clearly a badass.  The guy immediately come into the fight, the tide changes from a pretty even two-vs-one into a very bad situation.  If he wasn't still trying to figure out that Applejack really wants to be Heroic Neutral (she does good things but would rather be left alone than dragged into a conflict, so the plot has to make her give a damn before she does anything), he'd have probably taken both Twilight and Rarity down in a matter of seconds.  Rarity, that wasn't exactly a smart move to attack an opponent who flat-out blocked your strongest attack at this point with one arm.  Let's just hope Spike can turn the tide, if at all (due to the fact the poor little guy is still a kid while these girls flinging magic are teenagers, so he has a long way to go before being at their level).  His ability to sense if people he cares about are in trouble, though... is Spike implied to be part familiar or something?

So, Fluttershy, you're finally calling Rainbow out on her jealous behavior.  Not going to lie, it's satisfying to see Fluttershy stand up for herself like this, and while they should iron out the issues of their friendship, doing so while the fate of the world rests in the balance... we just really don't have too much time for that, right now, what with Rarity being tossed around by Haze and Twilight about to be forced to face both Haze and Nightingale by herself.  Let's just hope Fluttershy can get through to Rainbow with Soarin's promise, because if that doesn't work, Fluttershy will probably be forced to fight Rainbow, and we know who is more willing to throw down.
