The problem here is that your own characters don't seem to see the power of Spike. I imagine that if they aggravated him further by trying to incapacitate him, it'd just make him angrier and therefore even more powerful. Usually when fiction has a character that gets stronger the more it gets hurt/angry, the solution is to defeat it with non-aggression. Maybe this would make more sense if they were in a crowded city where bystanders could get hurt by his wanton destruction (like some other show featuring a baby dragon throwing a tantrum), but they're in the middle of a field where the only risk is the one trying to punch people to death, which it can't really do if no one gives him a reason to punch them or rile him up further.

The only way I can see Applejack helping matters in the fight is if Twilight uses that Elements of Harmony spell from Chapter 0. I don't really see how she could out-muscle him if it came down to it.

I know that. But most of their memories have been erased from their past lives. And Applejack seems to have some past trauma that keeps her from joining them. And it's taking so long for the comic to get to that, that I'm wondering just how much longer before she finally comes running to help.

I feel even when Applejack activates her jewel, she's still not going to join the team and act more like an aloof ally, like she'll come to help them in fights, but she won't really stick around afterwards or hang out with them.

I know. But with how quickly the other characters were on board, seeing Applejack as the reserved one for so long is getting tiresome. They've already made friends with her sister and brother. And despite Applejack acting like she doesn't need friends, she clearly doesn't apply the same logic to her own siblings. Which makes her a little bit of a hypocrite with the things she said about people to Twilight. Something tells me the possibility of losing her siblings might be what snaps her out of her funk.

Spike reminds me a bit of New Broly in this, he's a big guy who just keeps getting gradually stronger and stronger. Except while New Broly started off losing, this Spike isn't so outclassed.

I find it interesting that due to being her friend Pinkie will not unleash her full darker power but she still uses enough that she can do some impressive feats though Spike still stands strong.  Pinkie and Dash have a fun dynamic which fits very well to me as they have a fun dynamic in the show as well and even though she does not have the history of Fluttershy I do think they have the potential to become very close friends given time.
