Description
Flames, curls, bones and fish .. at least something like that was floating in my thoughts when I made this, it's one result of a string of shapes I've been playing with. It's designed as a pendant and carved from bone. I thought it would be interesting ... so I made it! Perhaps I'll post some of the other sketches - to see what you like.I'm especially interested in what you think it means/resembles to you.

lol, fair play! I just come out with these things constantly, heaven knows where I get the inspiration from but not only do I have to describe it on here but a title?!! Thanks for commenting

Well, my stuff tends to have titles like "stone with holes" or "wooden thing #7".

actually I associated it with that fish which you might be thinking of too the one which lives at the bottom of the sea, right? I don't know it's name
the spines are characteristic.
beautiful of course

Lionfish?[link] I saw some when I went diving of Thailand, around Similan islands (here [link] )
or perhaps a seahorse [link] ?
I don't know, I find many things come together to influence my designs and each one evolves from the next.
Glad you like it

lol, yes, there's more!
I'm buying some proper equipment (today hopefully) so with a little practice hopefully I'll be turning out some really cool stuff! I do really enjoy the end result but so far the creative process has been a little ... emotional, shall we say!!!
I have sold some actually, which is a real honor for me - I love em, but it's great to know other people like them too.

nice work...when i first checked out your gallery i thought you carved these out of plaster - but bone...fascinating. do you use a dremel with carving bits?
i've been interested in doing this technique myself by using plaster...might be slightly difficult with the material 'strength' but wanting to give it a try and see what i come up with.

Thanks, I used a fret-saw, some small files and lots of sandpaper strips backed with tape.
I really would like to use something like a dremel but was unsure of what to get - some say a pneumatic tools are better as they are lighter and rotate much faster ... hmm!
Bone is great because of it's toughness. I've been using the shin of the hind-leg as that's supposed to be the best. Space is still and issue though especially as all beef in the UK must be less than 18 months old so there's less mature bone to work with.
Thanks for looking

how much would you ask for a pendant like that?

MaX-DooM In reply to Ambra-Lioness [2006-12-05 15:14:41 +0000 UTC]
Depends on how difficult it is to make! One like this I might sell for around £30.
My skills are improving all the time so I hope the quality of my newer works to increase and I'm picking up faster ways to do things especially the finishing (smoothing and polishing).
What do you think?

Takes time though! ...one-offs also so I'd have to find customers who don't mind spending a little more for wearable art rather than run-of-the-mill jewelery
I enjoy it though and hopefully will have a job soon so I'll be able to get some more tools to save time.
thanks for looking and commenting - its appreciated

Well said. Your work is art and should not go cheap. Looking forward to what you can do when you get some real tools. Hard to believe it could get better.

I've got much better at the whole polishing thing now so my last one was literally twice as good and took me about the same amount of time. I'll photograph it next time I see it (a friend wanted it for her birthday).
