Description
This may look familiar, but believe it or not I drew the other picture for this story, but then ended up changing the outfits somewhat. It's actually pretty common for me, I do experiment with clothes a lot (I just usually hide it well). Anyway, the following pictures are very close to finished so I hope I can avoid my usual delays.
Anyway, as for the story, I'm attaching the first draft of it here for context. This is an early draft, so I still need to edit, review and fix it, but I hope it can provide sufficient backstory to make it more interesting to care about the struggle between the two. If you have any constructive criticism about the story (or picture) feel free to share, I always strive to improve.
-------------------------------
Haley finished wrapping a bouquet for her customers: a cute couple she remembered seeing a few times around campus. They’ve been together a few months at least, but were still in that disgusting lovey-dovey phase; it took Haley all of her willpower not to say something snarky. They kisses sloppily right in front of the counter.
“Sorry,” the girl said with a mischievous grin that left no doubt she wasn’t, “Love your dress, by the way!” she added, a bit more sincere this time.
Haley forced a smile thanking them, a storm of irritation rising inside. Truth be told, she desperately wanted something like that for herself, but… Haley often laid awake at night wondering what was wrong with her. Many guys have asked her out. But they were all so boring, there was never any spark.
There was one person who lit up her heart, but that was different. There was this girl Connie, and Haley wanted more than anything to be her best friend. Connie was a waitress at a nearby soda shop. It was pretty popular with the university students, and Haley continued to visit it frequently while working at the flower shop during summer break.
There was something very exciting about Connie. They would chat occasionally when there was a slow moment and no matter what they talked about Connie always made it seem so interesting. Haley really treasured these moments. She would replay their conversations in her head for days after.
Of course, none of that had anything to do with romance, she would just make a great friend that’s all. Though Connie was very pretty with her deep green eyes and being a head shorter than Haley made her seem extra adorable. Funny, if they were a couple she’d have to… NO! Haley pushed away the sinful thought. Despite her prayers some very wrong intrusive thoughts have been plaguing her lately.
Back from her daydreaming Haley was once again surrounded by boredom and loneliness. She pulled a double striped carnation from a nearby bucket. It was pretty: white with deep red outlines on the petals. Haley mushed it between her fingers watching pieces of it drop to the floor. There was a perverse pleasure in ruining something beautiful.
Haley heard a car stop outside, followed by a familiar irritating giggle. She could already feel her blood starting to boil. Her coworker Becca opened the door, but continued to face outside, exchanging some insipid words with her precious boyfriend. Only after his car was out of sight did she feel the need to acknowledge Haley.
“Morning,” Becca said in a sing-song voice. Arrogant smile on her face.
“You know your shift starts at ten, right?”
“Sweetie? You know who owns the store,” Becca rolled her eyes. “Like, the whole point of you working here? It’s to watch the fort while I’m away, OK?”
“Well, maybe next time you’re ‘away’” Haley did the air-quotes. “And your parents call, I won’t cover for you…”
Becca glared at her.
Haley made a telephone gesture, “Oh, hi Mr. and Mrs. Uy! Oh Rebecca? No she’s in the back of Steve’s car… yeah yeah, going at it like rabbits… yes, no shame at all.”
Becca slammed her hands on the counter, bringing her face an in inch away from Haley’s.
“I. WILL. END. YOU!”
Haley leaned back in her chair smiling, “We’ll see”
“I’m serious, Hey, I will kick your ass!”
“Uh-huh, sure.”
Rebecca groaned, “Why do have to be such a bitch, huh?” She raised her hands in frustration, “We are happy in love! Are you really such a miserable little shrew, that you just have to drag everyone else down?”
Haley just scoffed and shook her head. Even if she wasn’t actually going to rat Rebecca out, it was so much fun to get under her skin and torture her a little.
“No wonder no one likes you,” Becca said under her breath on the way to put her purse into the back room.
Hair on the back of Haley’s neck stood up, “what was that?”
“Oh nothing…”
“What do you mean, ‘nobody likes you’? You totally just made that up!” Haley’s heart was beating faster now.
“Whatever helps you sleep, sweetheart.”
“Oh, buzz off!” Haley wasn’t going to let that harpy get to her.
This was total poppycock. Rebecca didn’t know what she was talking about. She was just making it up. If nothing else, Connie definitely liked Haley. She was always friendly. It was her job of course, but still…
Another customer entered the store interrupting her train of thought.
~~~
In the sweltering sun time was moving slowly like molasses, but finally the clock arrow inched its way to four o’clock. After closing and locking up the store Haley started walking towards her favorite soda shop, butterflies in her stomach. In the back of her mind she always worried that Connie wouldn’t be there. One time when she came Connie had a day off, and it felt like her soul took a swim in a sewer. Everything seemed so pointless. The bright sun, the flowers, it all seemed to mock Haley, reminding her that no matter how much beauty there was around, her world was empty and false. Like cardboard cake.
“You know, you don’t have to tag along, right?” Becca’s voice sent a cold shiver down Haley’s spine. Infuriatingly, Becca seemed to be going in the same direction.
“You’re the one tagging along!” Haley spat.
“Uh, huh.”
Suddenly Haley could feel the pulse in her neck, “Girlie, I’ve been to ‘Juicy Melody’, like a hundred times before you knew it even existed!”
“Oh right, you’re obsessed with that waitress chick, what’s ‘er name? Cindy or something?”
“It’s Connie. And I’m not obsessed with her!” Haley’s ears and cheeks burned red. “She’s just cool is all.”
“Ah yes, some lazy waitress in a lousy diner, very cool.”
Would strangling Becca out in the open be a good idea? Don’t let her get to you!
Haley was flustered, “Last year she went hunting with her dad. Bagged this big mountain goat! She showed me a photo, it was BIG! Could you do that, huh? You’d pass out if there was no hair salon nearby!”
“A redneck waitress? I’m so impressed!”
If we weren’t in the street full of people… Haley’s whole body was shaking. “Better than some pampered, useless parasite!”
Becca giggled, “Aww, looks like it isn’t just your dress that’s green.”
“And being a spoiled brat is nothing to be proud of!”
“At least I’m not a charity case”
“What is that supposed to mean?”
“Haley, honey, you only have your job because your dad is friends with my dad.”
“You only have that job because of your dad! At least with me there is some merit!”
“Whatever.” Becca waved her hand.
They finally reached the soda shop and Haley once again braced herself. Please be at work today.
~~~
Haley felt a tremendous sense of relief when she caught a glimpse of Connie’s blonde hair. She and Becca made their way towards the counter.
“Oh my God, your dress is so pretty!” Connie greeted Haley. “I can never get over how beautiful you are! You could be a movie star! Did I say that before?”
Becca rolled her eyes. “Hey, maybe you can date our poor Haley,” she smirked.
Haley’s back was suddenly covered in cold sweat.
Becca continued, “Maybe she’ll finally get that stick out of her butt.”
Connie blushed and giggled, brushing Becca’s arm, Haley was mortified, unable to move or say anything.
“You folks are a real hoot,” Connie laughed, “I’ll get you your usuals.”
Haley’s ears were burning as warmth spread across her cheeks. No, no, no, no! How could her face betray her like that?
“Aww, look at you all blushy!” Becca mocked.
Becca moved closer: “I was only joking, but are you so hot and bothered you’re willing to…” Becca squeezed Haley’s knee. “… cut a few corners?” she whispered.
“Becca, stop it!” Haley ripped Rebecca’s hand from her leg.
Becca bit her lower lip, “My my, so much for pure virgin Haley. Underneath it all you’re a frisky little minx, aren’t ya?”
Haley wanted to fall through the floor. They were used to pushing each other’s buttons, but this was in public! In front to the very person, that… Cold sweat ran down Haley’s back. Did Connie hear any of that? Mercifully she saw that Connie was attending to a group of girls sitting off to the side. Her relief was cut short when one of the girls, a ginger with hair curls took Connie’s hand and said something. All them laughed, especially Connie, who was blushing and touching that floozy's shoulder, like they were best friends.
“Know who that is?” Becca asked leaning closer.
Haley was startled, “Uh, I’ve seen them around Campus, I think. Wait, are they, like in a sorority or something?”
“Cheerleading. Anyway, that ginger chick is Gisela, she was my partner in Chem last semester.”
“OK?”
“And that brunette next to her is Diana. A bunch of times I overheard them talking…”
“You eves dropped”, Haley corrected.
“I overheard, them talking about some wild parties at Diana’s lake house.”
Haley sighed, “why are you telling me this?”
“I heard they get to some… impropriety there, you know? Drinking,” she lowered her voice, “drugs maybe, even. It’s in the middle of nowhere, so they can get away with anything, really. Anything.”
“And you think I’m scandalized by this? Look, Beccie, I know you think I’m some prude, but…”
Rebecca leaned real close and whispered in Haley’s ear: “I bet they have some crazy lesbian orgies up there.” Haley’s cheeks tingled again, “I bet they bring little Connie there too, and defile her all night long.”
Haley spat her soda almost choking. She pushed Becca away, “Oh my God, what is wrong with you!?”
A few heads turned to look at them. Frustration and embarrassment started to bubble inside Haley. Rebecca just laughed, way too pleased with herself. All that Haley wanted was to have one small tender chat with Connie, was that too much to ask? Just a cute conversation between friends, but no! Rebecca had to ruin everything!
Haley was shaking with rage, but the last ting she wanted was to make a scene in front of Connie and those girls.
“I’m going home.” She said through gritted teeth, trying her best to compose herself.
“Good luck.”
Icy horror gripped Haley. She was trapped! Her choices were to stay and be tormented by Becca in front of everyone, or leave and wonder what Becca would be telling Connie behind her back.
“What were you guys talking about?”, Connie returned with a tray of empty glasses.
“What were we talking about, Haley, hmmm?” Becca turned her head to the side looking Haley right in the eye.
Something snapped.
“We were talking about,” Haley returned Becca’s gaze, “how Beccie is an insecure little dishrag, who doesn’t really have friends, and is a disappointment to her parents. And so she jumps on every guy who shows her enough attention. But then she feels ashamed, and tries to drag me down into the mud with her”
Becca’s nostrils flared, “You act act all high and mighty, but you’re just jealous!” She stood up looking down on Haley. “Must be frustrating, tossing and turning in you cold empty bed every night.” She leaned in closer, “touching yourself, while I get to experience the real deal. Pathetic!”
Connie gasped.
