Of course, I could not not be inspired by Davy Jones. One of the best character designs from any franchise in my opinion!

Don't focus on that, maaaaan! But yeah. One thing before you tear me to shreds: I didn't spend a lot of time on him because I wanted to start on other stuff. I really just wanted to try and get some sort of feeling across, the painting actually started out as an old man with a beard. I'm really bad at doing backgrounds and I have no idea how you just "come up with a background" for one of these, I just kind of tried to do something and ended up covering most of it with some ugly red smoke 'cause I can't do backgrounds.. like.. at all.
I'm defensive 'cause right now I'm just trying to get used to drawing in PS still, I really am still in that phase.
Hopefully you'll find something constructive to say anyway! : D

a crits gotta be constructive dude :3 i dont think you have critiques enabled on this so ill just post here.
First of all; the background- dont worry about it. While you're learning if you're drawing a character and the main focus of the concept is the character just keep the background simple so as not to distract the viewers eye (try a simple block colour,gradient or a few large texture brush strokes).
The figure overall isnt too bad- it does stand out from the background and so it retains some depth. Lighting seems alright too- i can see youve had a lot of fun with the texture brushes but id also recommended if you're just getting used to drawing in ps to stick with the hard round. It may not be the most interesting brush but the things you can make it with it can be.

Btw I can't turn on critique 'cause it's a premium feature
I mainly only used the one chalk brush for this though, I feel a lot more comfortable using that than the round brush. But I will try using it a bit more
