FINALLY, I HAVE GOT TO THIS PAGE- (as I said previously this comment won't be as long because I kinda talked about stuff that was gonna be in this comment earlier).
Sans, you're really not helping out the situation at all. However, I do wonder why Sans is quite so reluctant. We saw earlier that even in life threatening situations Sans will still try to use as little of his magic as possible, and there could be an infinite number of reasons as to why he would be like that. Does Sans simply not wish to attack Undyne? I highly doubt that's the reason. Could there be something with Sans' magic that's the issue? Or perhaps his connection to Papyrus? I really don't know.
"I'm trying to make sure you two can take care of yourselves!" - something about that line doesn't sound right, does Undyne already plan on leaving? Or is this more of an 'in-worst-case-scenario-and-she's-no-longer-around' sort of thing?
Also, why are Sans and Undyne standing in ankle deep water? Wouldn't that hinder movement? Not to mention it would completely saturate their shoes.

Well, I suppose the easiest way to explain it, is that up until they left the lab, Sans never had to use his magic, nor had any desire to. It felt pointless to try, he still has a bit of that mindset. He's very sure that Papyrus is the only one he needs, and that he doesn't need to fight. To him, Undyne's stepping over a boundary that she's not allowed to- Papyrus is his brother, not hers.
Huhuhuhu.. Yeaaahh.. Undyne knows something she's not talking about.. It's hinted at a bit, but it's insanely vague. There's a reason she wants to push the bros to be able to take care of themselves, but as usual- she wont say anything about it xD

After checking out some of the comment sections I figure Maxlad enjoys hearing people's stories so I'm gonna share. I apologize for length, I know I am long winded.
I'm one of those people that tried the Undertale demo, didn't get hooked, and never really had any interest until I ran into some stuff by coincidence. I ran into some sans stuff (initially just his backstory but eventually I watched his entire boss fight) and decided to look further into it and found quite a few things I liked. Naturally, I ran into the typical warnings about spoiling the experience but I figured I wasn't going to play the game unless I found some interesting spoilers so I actually knew most of the hidden stuff way before I knew the basics, for example I knew what a Soulless run but didn't know that Hotland existed until I got there.
Now, where this gets interesting is the part where I decide that Undertale is worth supporting, but I wasn't actually sure if I wanted the game itself. The game seemed slow paced, the main allure was the story, and I figured I might just get bored and quit halfway. I was seriously considering checking to see if there was some other way to support them than buying the game when I found out that Underfell was a thing. Naturally, I really liked what I saw and after reading a few webcomics I came across the comic Goat Dad, made by some "Maxlad" person. After reading how they'd done four Genocide runs before even attempting a True Pacifist run I could not help but grin at the thought of doing a genocide run just to lock myself out of the True Pacifist ending, and since I'd already read most of the spoilers what could the run spoil? I purchased my copy and went straight into the game.
So, after doing a Hard mode just because I knew it existed I set out to erase the world. I farmed froggits, I fought (and often lost to) random monsters, I alt-tabbed to run in place, I even save scummed a bit/a ton in order to kill every last monster I could. I tried to stroke my ego by doing a bandage-only run, but Undyne quickly disabused me of that notion and I had to forgo my pride to get anywhere near beating her. Surprisingly, I found that Undyne was a lot harder for me to defeat than sans and I was only able to win against her by consuming every snowman piece I could find... although I should probably mention that I remembered viewing most of sans' attacks so I can't really brag about that. Heck, I say he was easier for me but I actually had to pop four sea teas to survive his last attack and only knew sea teas existed because I read a sans guide...
Anyway, after having completed my Genocide run I was seriously considering going Genocide on the Ruins and Toriel just to see the scene where THE GREAT PAPYRUS congratulates sans for doing a good job finding a human. I resisted the urge to not hide behind the lamp (but I cannot express how hard I'm going to re-watch that scene after I finish typing this!) and decided to see if I could figure out how to beat the True Pacifist route without any help (not counting spoilers I had already run into). Everything was going well, I got to Snowdin with no incidents and even managed to make THE GREAT PAPYRUS happy with my puzzle solving skills. Once the fight started, I flirted a bit before seeing what would happen if I died to his attacks before he activated blue mode. I laughed at being captured, looked around the shed a bit, then pulled up my big boy pants and set out to Mercy him.
Aaaaand then he locked me in the shed again. Twice, actually. I got demolished pretty hard, and I hadn't even made it to any of serious attacks. When he offered to stop trying to capture me... well... I thought long and hard about whether or not I was willing to gamble on whether or not you can get True Pacifist if you admit defeat. On the one hand; I had defeated sans and Undyne both, and relished the thought of their challenges. On the other hand... I really couldn't see myself winning here. Eventually, I decided it was worth the gamble to skip the fight and was so friggin' relieved when it turned out I could still True Pacifist. I woulda been so steamed if I'd missed out because of this.
In the end, I really wrote all of this down just to let you know THE GREAT PAPYRUS was the only monster I couldn't actually beat. Not emotionally, mind you- I No Mercy'd him easy enough. He just kicked my ass so hard I wasn't willing to try again.

Genocide run is still my favourite honestly, even though I adore hanging out with Papyrus and trying to find secrets throughout the game.
