It's a Pirate AU (Or a silly AU in piratey disguise since only 2 monsters are officially pirates)
Basically the monsters were trapped on an island instead of underground, where a massive sea monster prevents them from leaving the island. There is still a barrier, but the sea monster wont let them near it.

Beware all trains of thought beginningΒ with "What if-" it can be either something fluffy and adorable or soul crushingly angst-ridden. However, I must admit, I've never seen people trying to come up with puns suddenly ending up with angst, but there's a first time for everything I suppose.Β
