As gulls above with haunting cry
climbed to meet the newborn sky
and Arien's fiery chariot rose,
defeating Ered Luin's shadows;
still, like statues, on the quay,
we stood beside the muttering sea.
We embraced close, and on my chest
her cheek, I hoped we'd always rest
so near! So fair, my precious wife
whom I loved more than my own life.
She raised to me her eyes so clear,
I gently smoothed away a tear.
"Beloved! Weep not for us now,"
I said, "I swear to you a vow.
My love to you I'll ever keep,
though mountains tall and ocean deep
and countless leagues between us part,
our love will live within my heart."
"Beloved! Stay not on this shore!"
she whispered. "Come to Valinor
with me and join our blessed kin,
who've waited ages long therein
for us, for you, for all our race
to join them in that Holy place.
Hark with me the golden bells
of Valmar sweet, where legend tells
of glistening meads and scented rain,
where lives no death nor fear nor pain.
O my sweet Soronúmë,
stay not at these Havens Grey!"
I held her close that she not see
how much her words had meant to me.
"Melinë, my fondest love,
made by gods from stars above.
Welcomed into Aman's bliss
we'd be, but I would sorely miss
the endless forests great and old,
the vivid scent of ancient mould.
I'd miss my mortal friends most dear
who may never leave from here."
A voice rang out - "Fair Elves decide!
Will you embark? Will you abide?
Arien shines upon the Sea,
she will not wait, and nor will we!"
"Go, Melinë, join our son,
who has this journey safely done.
He waits now on the deathless shore
in glorious, hallowed, Valinor.
To you, my love, in Manwë's name
once Death has made its final claim,
my mortal friends will this world leave.
Then, I swear, I will not grieve.
Instead, to you I'll come with haste,
and then together we will taste
the fragrant dew of Valinor,
in blissful love for evermore!"
She smiled and kissed and went aboard,
and as the sails billowed and roared,
I saw her stand and softly say,
"until we meet, namarië!"
In the morning's growing light
the ship sped swiftly from my sight,
and on my shoulder Círdan's hand,
brought me back to this fair land.
