It looks like she's a big gal, but she's actually a very tiny girl. the horses were small. a little bigger than ponies. She competed earlier this yr. they have to hit targets in boxes that are 1.5x1.5 ft while riding horses. three targets, three points. this round she got 2 of 3 targets. her horse was one of the more rambunctious ones and was probably one of the fastest.

equipment: Canon 7D, Sigma 120-400, shooting in shutter priority

Thanks. I'm getting ready to order this one for my wall. Seems like a lot of people like this shot more than any I've taken.

Could it be that this horse is a Hokkaido horse ? Those are said to be small, but I read somewhere they could almost go on par with Arabian horses on very short runs.
Again, fantastic image. This pair looks... aerial, their moves very fluid despite the apparent unbalance between rider and horse's sizes. and you captured their common determination and concentration perfectly. Your work makes "pictures of the floating world" all due honor

I couldn't answer your question. Most horses here in northern Japan are short and stocky. There are horses at the northern tip of Honshu that are completely wild and all of them are short and stocky.

Thank you much for the compliments.

Cyril-Helnwein [2011-08-17 23:12:32 +0000 UTC]

Pretty cool! btw, I'm very certain that's a pony, it looks tiny! Ponies are usually anything under 14.2 "hands" (about 1.5 meters or nearly 5 feet) at the withers (the highest part of the back just below the neck).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

maxre In reply to Cyril-Helnwein [2011-08-18 09:52:17 +0000 UTC]

Trust me, it's a horse. The horses in northern japan aren't big at all. matter of fact, most are stout, have bigger heads and barrel shaped bodies. I went to the most northern tip of Honshu to see the wild ones and they're all "thicker" than an average horse but smaller and have much more hair to protect them from the winters.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Cyril-Helnwein In reply to maxre [2011-08-18 10:38:53 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you're absolutely right. A pony is a horse also (as in the species of horses). We just call anything below 1.5 meters at the withers a pony to differentiate between the sizes easier. This horse looks much smaller than that, thus calling it a pony would not be incorrect but calling it a horse is also fine.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

maxre In reply to ArcherAkhet [2011-08-16 22:08:32 +0000 UTC]

it's a Japanese long bow

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ArcherAkhet In reply to maxre [2011-08-17 14:33:11 +0000 UTC]

I know that. but it's still huge. Certainly useful, but I still find it difficult to imagine how they were in a battle. I think it could not simply use other weapons, while if the belt or hung on their backs in a big bow.We, Hungarians, this bow is used:[link]

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

maxre In reply to ArcherAkhet [2011-08-17 20:36:44 +0000 UTC]

hahaha...that bow is about the same size as the ones in this competition. you forget that Japanese are small people...and so are their horses.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ArcherAkhet In reply to maxre [2011-08-18 14:48:56 +0000 UTC]

Well, I do not know. The Hungarian people are still small compared to Western Europeans. After all, little more than a thousand years ago came here from Asia.Once he visited the Japanese and a Hungarian bow to each other.
