Description
Commission - December 2021Getting commissions: Yes
Getting commissions for fantasy/D&D characters: Awwww yisssss
Getting commissions for D&D characters where I have lots of freedom on design and one of them is a six armed spider goddess in Victorian garb: YAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSS
Getting commissioned for a beach episode of said characters: *foaming at mouth with two thumbs up*
"And can you make him buffer?" ... *foaming at mouth with one thumb up*
I joke.
I'm sure by now you all know I'm OBSESSED with these two characters I was commissioned for last slot set, so being able to put them in a "traditional anime beach episode" (commissioner's wording) was basically a Christmas miracle.
I was able to bring in a lot of aspects from their original outfits (found here: www.deviantart.com/maycontainb…
and here:
www.deviantart.com/maycontainb… )
to tie them to their original designs and keep the colour palette similar but also was able to throw in entirely new aspects and incorporate the minor redesigns that have cropped up since I did the reference sheets (such as his tattoos and added muscle mass). Traditionally feminine swimsuits (and classic one piece swimsuits) I've always found super easy to edit and design but always feel far more restricted when it comes to traditionally men's modern swimwear. In today's world there tends to be swim trunks and swim briefs and that's it. Not much room to play there. So I'm glad I had his previous outfit to tie into to get something at least a little more interesting than a pair of shorts.
Water magic is something I've been wanting to practice for a while but always chicken out for (as is the reoccurring theme with this commissioner), so I really enjoyed putting work in on that front. While I don't think it's quite at the level I see my other colouring I'm pretty happy with it! It has consistent flow and movement, which is the main thing I was watching out for. Definitely something I want to play with in the future.
Tried something new with the sky, since I've been wanting to try out wispier clouds instead of SSDD Cumulus, and while it turned out the way I was hoping (more obvious ones in the front, far subtler ones in the back), because it turned out properly it feels streaky, so I'm not sure if I'll continue to go that route. It's accurate, but I've spent so long fighting to get smooth washes with markers (especially in skies) I can't help but have that looming "streaky=bad" feeling over my shoulder. Maybe I should just practice some skyscapes to get over it. Skies aren't always smooth, after all.
One more commission left of this slot set, then I'll be doing up a new commission sheet (including updating the prices), and then I'll be able to open slots again.
Done with Copic markers on 9"x12" Strathmore marker paper with Polychromos and white ink for detailing.
