#Inktober #Inktober2020Day 27 - Music
Ethan heard jazz music for the first time when he and Sam were on the Outside (i.e. the rest of the world that's not the Senate); it was drifting out of a cafe they passed by and he froze in his tracks, completely captured by it. Sam had to drag him away by the arm (they were on a timeline) but they returned afterwards so he could find out what style of music it was. Since that day, he's been obsessed. He even bought himself a trumpet so he could learn.
"Is he any good at it?"
Utter garbage. Since the Senate requires absolute silence at all times, the only time he had to practie was while on the Outside heading to missions.
In the car.
While Sam drove.
Sam does NOT like jazz.
(All jokes aside, she likes it after she defected because it reminds her of him, but she's certainly had her fill of 'live performances'.)
This was my main music inspiration for this piece (particularly the rift at 1:42): www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpiNfHβ¦
I wasn't sure which outfit to put Ethan in. I considered something he'd actually wear (he and Sam have the same opinion of formal attire), but I felt like the suit was necessary to really up the jazz factor. (I considered throwing in some music notes with iridescent gold but left it alone.)
Looks like I gave up and used cool colours again. Sure, it's yellow, but it's a very cool yellow. As for the background itself...meh. It's done. All of the jazz-style images I saw that I considered required either black ink or a third colour, and I'm sticking to my guns and not using either. I ended up asking around "when you think of jazz, what two colours do you think of?" and blue and yellow were the two most popular options (generally paired together).
Done with Marabu Aqua Inks and the Mapping nib. (This is easily my least favourite nib. It has next to nothing for an ink reserve, it catches the paper constantly, it resists starting, just...all of it. But I want to use each of my nibs at least once, so today's piece is the sacrifice for it.)

... I believe everyone has a set of sound they resonate with, regardless of melodic inclination. Whatever noise that makes a person feel something beyond its surface cause and effect is what defines music, IMO. Even something as visceral and shrill as the death throes of a creature in mortal peril can hold meaning that moves a person should they find themselves compelled by its prose. Hence in the absence of musical instruments, We Are The Instrument. ( Said the Metalhead ) >)B^] \m/

β¦ True, much like how while I am quite fond of string instruments with droning acoustics, woodwind sounds such as clarinet would be more representative personality wise. How about you?Β
Β Which has me intrigued as to the narrative mechanisms you'd imploy in how their story is conveyed in an entirely literary medium when there are presumably chapters with no spoken dialog at all let alone any sound for extended periods of time? Are such sections told predominantly in first perspective through internal processes, or from a third perspective interpreting their sign language?Β >):^?
