Description
Deep Sea Non-Transitory~Due to their high intellect and severely endangered status, fishing in these mermaids' territories is strictly prohibited, and bringing one to the surface - even accidentally - will land you in prison for manslaughter.~
For my deep sea non-transitory environment I decided to base a mermaid loosely off of a snailfish, found in the bottom of the deepest trenches. Due to their composition they have to stay in areas of high pressure, and bringing them to the surface (as with many deep sea creatures) will be a slow, excruciating death. (So please look but don't touch.)
I did NOT expect to get this much accomplished for today's piece! I woke up early because I had so much to do, and even with that I didn't expect to have more than a sketch for today's submission. The fates smiled on me, though: the sketch came together super quickly, so I was able to have it "lined" (I just pressed harder with my blue graphite on the lines I wanted to keep) just before I clocked in. On break I realized I didn't have my masking film so haphazardly freehanded it (hence the butchered hands and rough edges on the text block - but I feel like that works for it), but I was able to get the background finished just as I had to come back from break (allowing it to dry while I worked). And while colouring took forever, I managed to finish it! (That being said, I stayed up past my bedtime and now hate everything.
While the background is done with the Marabu Aqua Inks, as always, I coloured her in with the Prismacolor Premier pencil crayons (though her face and hair are lined with Polychromos - I realized too late I don't have any purple for my Polychromos, which I may have to fix next time I ordered supplies). I'm definitely thinking I prefer Polychromos for adding details/accents to Copic pieces but prefer the Prismacolor if I'm going to be going over large areas.
She had a more defined shape in her torso with the sketch, but I admittedly had NO idea how to shade her, so she looks a bit wonky where she connects to the tail. Forgive me.
Oddly enough I'm having a far easier time keeping ink from going onto the previous/future pages by just freehanding it than when I tried sealing it with tape for nice edges. I almost feel like the rough edges fit the travel-journal style more anyway.
"Wow, Mermay is going by really quickly!"
"Uuuuh, Holley? You're only 4 days in?"
"...Oh."
