~Hiding in burrows for protection and at low tide, these small merfolk can use the sharp barbs on their arms to dart out and snatch unsuspecting fish. In this way they are able to tackle prey many times their size - ESPECIALLY if it happens to already be in a Mangrove Merfolk's basket. They've caused serious damage to these tools and relics, and as a result the Mangrove Merfolk have become their biggest threat.~

I based these cutie patooties off of the zebra mantis shrimp and their lifestyle, hiding in the dug out tunnel and grabbing fish as they go by (which is why I wanted to do the sinister little chaos gremlin in the corner, but knew that didn't really show off the mermaid design at all, so threw in a second wreaking havoc). Their hair is in oval twin buns to mimic the shrimp eyes, but I coloured the hair too dark so it doesn't show up very well. I didn't plan on doing a chibi initially, but I was low on time today (and this STILL managed to take a super long time despite them just being chibis), so I'm glad I didn't aim for a proportional piece.

We're nearly three weeks into Mermay and I still don't have a decent way of lining over top of my Prismacolor pencil crayons. The sharpened Polychromos mostly just peels away the wax from the Prismacolor, my fineliners don't want to work over top of them (and the ones that work soon clog and never work again), my brush pen just sits on top and then smudges off, my dip pens clog up immediately, and if I try to line them beforehand the pencil crayon just covers it up because they're so opaque. Anyone have any tips? Because I'm getting grumpy (to absolutely no one's surprise).

Done with Marabu aqua inks for the background and Prismacolor Premier pencil crayons for the chaos gremlins. There's also a few fish there in Polychromos, but they're intentionally pushed into the background more (but unintentionally pushed back a little too much).
