Time to prepare for this tutorial: 1 year
Time to make the tutorial: 6 hours
Purpose of the tutorial: To help beginners, or people who struggle with drawing perspectives to get a start in apply it.

I feel quite accomplished being able to finish this tutorial now. I promised this since last year, it was a challenge to even start to make it.
Honestly, I don't feel I am good at perspective, but it seems like I am good enough to teach some basics.

There are plenty of tutorials on perspectives out there, but not everyone can apply the technquies after they learn them.
I hope this tutorial will help out the majority of the artists who started drawing with characters first like I am.

Other recommanded tutorials: From easy to hard

Interactive Perspective
Introduction to Perspective
Eye Level
Spherical Perspective

To get more indepth about the "Character first" method I used to learn perspective.

I decided to focus on "Graphic" telling you the story and the rules, not the text. I hope that works and it's clear enough, because having getting used to thinking this way, I tend to skip and not make it specific enough for beginers.

For the beginers: You might have to re-read this tutorial 2-3 times to get what I am saying, don't rush, study.

I'm a bit confused. I don't understand how boxing the circle/oval and finding the center equals finding the horizon line. I'm sure you aren't, but it seems like you're just assuming where the h-line is.

Is it where the two lines from the box intersect?

The method here is using the perspective you already set with the character to find that H-line.
The H-line can be set 2 ways, one is before you draw anything... one is after you draw something.

In the beginning perspective is harder to grasp due to the concept,
If you need more information about perspective you should consider getting a book,
the info will be more complete for you to grasp the concept.

My biggest problem in perspective when it comes to people is the down to up and up to down perspective. (Meaning below or above a person. I often make mistakes with the leg thickness for females. (Giantess pics.)

As a beginner, I need all of the tutorials (especially for dummies) that I can get. These are clear and incredibly helpful. Thank You for taking the time to create and post these for others to learn.

I love your gallery, you are already a professional.

thank you. I am very glad you found this brief tutorial helpful, I was trying to be visually percise, not everyone gets it, but most who already did their begining study in perspectives seem to get it quite well.

i've problems with the face's in the pic, i can' see a differenz (ok i can see some - but ...(arrgh its hard to explain that ) i can't see what the differenz is about (@.°)

mayshing In reply to Tharalin [2007-01-24 20:15:30 +0000 UTC]

the differences is the subtle use of curve lines, if you assume things are straight, your work will turn out rigid and unnatural, but if you observe carefully, you should see a difference in the use of curve, arch for perspective.

I'm a little confused here. I sort of see how boxing a sphere can help locate a center, but I don't understand what is the use/application for finding its center.

mayshing In reply to CheshireCat8D [2006-12-29 21:05:13 +0000 UTC]

to find the horizon line, that's how one starts to set perspective for the scenery if they want to use it. If you are not familiar with the use of perspective yet, go to visit the tutorials I listed at the bottom.
This tutorial in particular is for those who already have the basic perspective knowledge, yet can't apply it, it's a bridge for them.

Oh this is terrific! Perspective is definitely one of the trickiest things to capture. Thank you so much for this, it's definitely a useful resource to study!

mayshing In reply to le-coeur-brise [2006-12-29 06:56:33 +0000 UTC]

its only tricky because it's a completely different set of thinking, and it's not easy to convey it to another group of people who learn in different ways. I finally figured out how the system works, and learned to use it in my turn, which is the kind that most people have learned naturally.
