After you locate your style just search up related references that's close to it, make a "my style reference" folder and practice with that selected visual reference.

It can be anything you choose as long as its where you want to go.

What if I value originality? How then would I bear to develop a style based on the styles of others?

we all take reference from something.
Look at it this way, if you want to write an original novel, you need to first have vocabulary.
Did you invent the vocabulary? No, you learn it from people.
If you want to write a certain type of novel that people likes to read, you have to study the same type of novels.
When you sample from other people's work, you are sampling Visual Vocabulary.
Once you have enough visual vocab, you can develop whatever you want.
The only problem occurs with originality is when you only study one style of art for a long time, you end up inheriting only that style, and never invent based on other references. However, if you combine three different styles (unless they are all super similar) your choice of what to combine with is yours, and you can combine more than once to grow your style.
3 is a good number to focus on, anything more than 3 gets too overwhelming when you study.
IF you want you can copy just the real life items and photos, no one says you can't do that, however, the interpretation from only photos and real life means you are going toward hyper realism. If you throw in stuff from other fine artists, interpretation changes.
