I think good observation and practice is the key to improve your drawing. There are many great tutorials on DA and they are very helpful, too.

Okay I have a question but not about the hair. I have really big problem with background something like on this picture - [link] This background is very blurry - how I can draw it?

PS: My english is bad, so tell me if you not understand what I wrote

MayumiOgihara In reply to KamilSitek [2012-02-28 18:00:48 +0000 UTC]

When you're creating realistic drawings we focus on the details, so a soft focus background often confuses us. Try not to think about what's actually there in the background, instead focus on the shapes and the values. Fill in the area with more or less layers of graphite according to the reference photo, then blend lightly. When you apply graphite, try working on small area at a time with a gentle pressure. If you use too much pressure, you'll ended up with visible pencil marks even after blending is done. When you blend wider area I recommend using something like tissue (I use heavy duty workshop paper towel), use soft pressure, and start with lighter area. If you have very dark areas, be careful not to smear graphite in surrounding area. If there are some brighter spots in the background, you can lift graphite using kneadable eraser. Shape kneadable eraser into point/blade/or any desirable shapes and dab it. (not rubbing) Do you use a piece of paper or something under your drawing hand? If the oil from your finger tips are on the paper, graphite powder sticks to them and create blotchy/uneven look, and they become really noticeable when you blend. Even you're being careful you'd still get some of them. You can clean up these unwanted dark spots with a kneadable eraser.

English is not my first language either, so please let me know if my explanation isn't clear to you. Your English is fine, by the way!

Thank you very much for yours tips. A few days of practices and I can see progress with my hair and blurry background

You're most welcome! I'm very happy to hear it helped, but it is your effort and patience that were the big part of your progress. Practise is the only way to improve your drawing skill and it seems that you're on the right path Happy drawing!
