Description
Transfiguration...Automatic drawing
This is a kind of new road i'm traveling with my art.
Drawing from the subconscious without thought or reference (as far as possible).
I usualy get myself in some sort of meditive /trancelike state with the use of music (my choice: Byron Metcalf). Before this stage i just draw these blob-like little shapes and when i do reach that trancelike state i start to see all these faces within the drawing that i accentuate. It has been said that within this state spirits show them self or even take over the drawing process.
True or not true the process is really fun and interesting at the same time.
If you have any thoughts or experiences on automatic drawing, let me know. I'm curious what you think about it.
Thank you for your interest!

Yes, I understand your process.Β
Β Of course, the mediums and visions are completely different, but the thought process is very similar...down to the music induced trance. I cannot draw without music, I get to distracted. Usually, some kinda long drone/fuzzed/repetitive beat/spaced out dirge. Earth, Master musician of Bukake,Wooden Shjip, etc.
I call it Trans-Galactic-Inter-Dimensional-Channeling.
I find the results are eerily similar...
I'd add a link, but, not sure how! Anyway, feel free to check my "manifestations" folder...

The process you describe is very familiar, I've heard it being referred to as 'open focus' meditation. It sounds pretentious, but I actually find that I have more intense and reflective experiences with 'automatic drawing' or 'open focus drawing' than I do with any traditional seated meditation.
Really great work, absolutely love this one.

I do some automatic drawing, but normally I start with a certain concept in mind. Then I gradually add on random, mostly organic shapes that seem to contradict with each other even though I had no intention of that.. so I just keep going with it, until I get to the point of wanting to re-editing it (in most cases that screws up the whole drawing for me.) -This state you described being in is interesting and you influenced me to expand on it.

Thanx for the comment. Yes it is an interesting way of making art and i feel there is will be more expressing from deeper levels of consciousness.

There's a great conversation happening in this thread.
The drawing I'm working on right now has gone in this direction. I have the best time creating when I let the music and my fingers lead me on. Unfortunately I have few examples of it in my gallery. None of my art could be called truly automatic. There's a push and pull between conscious ideas and desires, and becoming immersed in the emotion I feel in the music. Sometimes my hands sort of tell me that they're gonna try something, and that's very exciting to be the observer of yourself, in a way.
And I think your piece here is wonderful!

Thank you Carla for the comment and he nice words.
For me it is the most free and pure way to make art.
And for me it is also switching between different stages of consciousness, ego likes interfering

That is pretty close to my process. I distract myself by one of a variety of methods. I started a group specifically for this sort of art. I see a doodle as a simplest form of this, that tons of people do. Like when you're sitting in class trying to pay attention, or talking on the phone, and, not paying attention to your drawing really, you end up doodling something really cool.... I used to cover whole sheet and not have realized I was doing it.
Anyway, I'm going to invite you and take a look through your gallery. I'd love if you join, and submit some of your stuff, since this is sort of exactly what I'm looking for. My current thing is painting, and I will paint for hours spaced out. It's always a bit of a challenge getting in the zone because we are so attenuated to go into a beta rhythm when our eyes fix on something with a lot of detail fairly close to us. It's a bit easier, the larger the painting is, because I'd have to step back to see what's going on.
I find imagination, daydreaming, what have you, in combination with music, and perhaps a video stream running nonstop on the computer, all work well, to distract from the demand to process the visual input analytically. Daydreaming in particular, because it provides an alternate visual input to the one provided by the eyes.
Off to look at your gallery now! Thanks for describing your process, I knew other people do the same sort of thing!

Yes it's an interesting and pure process and music helps great to get myself in a sort of trance like state where things seem to appear.
Thanx for the invite.

Really impressive! The photo, however, does not make justice to the beauty of your work. It is difficult to see the amazingly interesting details.

Thanx and yes thats always the case with a scan, it looses much information and never seems to contain the original softness of the drawing. I always try to get the best result in photoshop.

Yes thats the right way to see it. Although it is a constant switch from the subconcious to the concious and back again as the mind won't except being in the subconcious the whole time. Thanx for the nice words!

I used to only do automatic drawing... We used to call it "Talking to the spirit of the paper" when we were children, all of my friends did it. We would start by drawing a few lines on a paper, and then just letting our hands do the work until an image emerged. We said that every piece of paper wants to have a picture on it, you just had to find it. Some of my best works have come about that way.
This is exactly what I think it was... The energy guiding you, spirits or something.. This is absolutely amazing. I'm really captivated by it.

This approach to your work I find similar to my own, although my tool is CS3-Photoshop
these days. Also listening to ambient music puts me in the zone. I like this piece. Only
wish I view the original. I assume the bright white areas are achieved in pastel.

I understand what you said, I often start drawing wherever I can without realizing of it or not totally, so it get me thinking that maybe my right hand has it's own life haha but I never thought of using it as a method, it's spontaneous I can't use it by my own will, right?
but this is... pretty stunning, somehow reflects the real side of the unconscious
AMAZING work! I wish I could do something like this someday and not just doodles

MBKKR In reply to AyameMarquis [2011-08-03 18:34:18 +0000 UTC]
Thank you, i guess it always is a combination of the concious and the subconcious.
When i start a drawing it is more or less from the concious and after a while, especialy listning to the discribed music, the unconcious takes over and i'm in a sort of trance.

Amazing drawing! <3<3<3 The spirits are your own subconscious both personal and collective, a powerful meditative process, I myself have gained much insight from it as well as healing. I have done woodcarving sculpture where the process itself induced a trancelike state since it was very slow and meditative, just responding to the natural configurations of wood itself. I did some automatic writing on waking up early this morning, for the first time totally outside my consciousness.
