I love dead things (bones/skulls), but I'm awful at drawing them. XD I've given up dead characters out of frustration PFFT
I love this design. Deer are rad. *u*

Oh man me too! They can be tricky. I have a bunch of skulls in my room so I see them everyday in all kinds of lighting. They make great references. I've given up on many a skeletal character as well but I've found when I've come back to it after awhile that it works out and I'm happy with the result. Keep trying!

Thank you! They really are!

You have a bunch of skulls? *_* Want! Where did you purchase them? I can't find a reasonably priced place to get ahold of any canine/deer skulls. :c Besides a pewter necklace... Which is rather too small to use as a reference.

I do. All of the ones I have are ones that I have found except for one of my two domestic cat skulls. Pricing can be a pain but so much time can go into cleaning a skull and I would rather have a clean skull than something I have to deflesh xD Sometimes casts of skulls are cheaper and they tend to be a lot more durable!

I can't believe you've found yours -- That's amazing! I don't think there's any place around where I live to find a skull.. ;c I don't think I'd have the stomach for cleaning one anyways, I'm a wuss. xD Would you happen to know a good place to find casts that don't cost an arm and a leg?
This conversation has seriously inspired me to start practicing drawing skulls. thankyouu--

I live in a pretty rural area so I have amassed several species. Mostly domestics, a horse, a cat, a pig skull and things like that. I try and purchase things now so the skulls come with papers because some species are illegal to own in certain places without proper documentation.

Cleaning can be daunting and I haven't ever had to deflesh anything major (some dried skin or waterlogged specimens with bits of ick still on it) Unfortunately, I do not know any particularly cheap websites but this one has some superb quality and amazing specimens, especially humans, boneclones.com/ and Skulls Unlimited is my favorite place to buy from (my cat skull is from there.)Β

Oh, that makes me so happy to hear! I find skulls and bones to be inspiring myself both from a scientific and artistic standpoint. Glad to know others feel the same!

Wow, that's so cool! You seriously should post photos of your skull collection. *_* I don't think I've ever even seen a pig skull.. Google time. Β
I had no idea that some were illegal to own in some places without the right papers... I'll have to do some research on that before I buy any real ones online.

How did you learn how to deflesh them even? Did someone teach you? (Sorry for so many questions, I can't say I've had a lot of chances to talk to anyone interested in animal skulls.)
And thank you for the link! c:Β

On a random note, I think some of the most fascinating skulls are snake skulls. They are so bizarre, I feel like I'm looking at alien specimens.

Haha maybe one day! Pig skulls are super rad, one of the creepier looking skulls in my opinion.

Yep, you definitely gotta be aware. These laws are put in place to protect threatened species so they are very important.

As I've said, I've done no major defleshing, basically letting nature take its course with things. I'm not too squeamish but smell dead things are not so much fun to mess around with XD Here is a great list of references for the vulture culture enthusiast strangebio.com/post/1119163739… that definitely comes in handy.

Don't apologize for questions! I love talking about this stuff. I'm by no means an expert or anything of the sort but I would be happy to answer any questions you have to the best of my ability.

Oh yes, one of my dreams is to have a fully articulated snake skeleton. Snakes are some of my favorite animals and I would love to have some in my collection. Seals also have some really cool skulls (and teeth especially) but my favorite skulls have to be bulldogs, now those are some alien skulls XD

Sorry for taking so long to reply -- Pig skulls are super creepy, but they're so cool because of that.

I had no idea it could be so strict in some places, I'm actually really surprised. ouo But it makes perfect sense, and I'm glad they have restrictions like that to preserve species.Β

Thank you for the link!
I'm very squeamish, which makes my fascination with skulls sort of... Odd? But I'm not as bad as I used to be. ^^

I'm surprised by how almost.. caninelike seal skulls are at first glance. I mean, they're clearly different but first seeing one I thought I was looking at some dog breed's skull. And bulldog skulls are almost comical, aren't they? XD I giggled when I googled them. Overall though, I think my favorite would have to be deer skulls. I just love how long they are and how eerie they look to me..

Oh! Another thing, have you ever heard of "Jake's Bones" ?Β www.jakes-bones.com/p/about-me… He's this cool kid that collects bones and skulls -- if you click "my bones" he has pictures of all of the different skulls and skeletons he's collected. *_*

Oh no worries. I've been away a lot so it's totally cool. I know, pigs are creepy as heck and that is also the reason I like them.

Oh yeah, I have no problem with them and I try my best to keep to them and be aware. I'm all about animals being preserved and protected.

It's all about exposure, once you're around "gross" stuff long enough it becomes no big thing. It's just getting to that point that's tough haha XD But skulls by themselves aren't particularily gory (unless they're fresh haha.)

Aren't they though? Seals have some wicked teeth (some species like leopard and crabeater seals actually use them to strain krill from the water.) A lot of purebreed dogs have really funky skulls from extreme selective breeding, which is interesting from an aesthetic standpoint but sad from an animal health one.Β  www.taxidermy.net/forum/index.… (Slight fish gore warning) Now check this bad boy out (also one of my favorite fish, they're actually really neat animals.)

Deer are such pretty animals and are amazing. Although they aren't deer, or even antelope, pronghorns have amazing eye sockets, they almost don't look real.

Omg what an adorable child! Awwwwwwwwwww thanks so much for linking me, I'll have to browse his stuff!
