It's representing a pride in heritage that is inextricably tied to racism. It's not heritage, it's hate.

Some people do not understand the connotations of it and therefore are at fault for being ignorant of how harmful it is, but most are well aware of what it means and usually pair it up with expressions like "the south will rise" and garbage like that. It's a symbol of hate and it needs to be removed from the public eye. Education is important in order to avoid excusing horrid behavior and perpetuating bigotry.

There are literally hundreds of articles on why the confederate flag is a symbol of racism and hatred. A simple google search would suffice. It's your responsibility, more than anyone else's to pursue information and stay informed. There are so many articles written by those who are far more knowledgable and coherent than I. What a symbol was in the past can have very different connotations in the present and to avoid looking like an ass, I suggest you familiarize yourself with them.

The first 5 results on Google were 4 articles, some of which contradict known history, and a "discussion" on debate.org over whether or not the confederate flag was a symbol of hate and/or racism.
None of those sites offered supporting evidence (merely making conjectures or asserting their case, for or against, as fact) and only the folks on Debate.org even mentioned the battle standard which is so commonly targeted.
There were mentions of white supremacists and racists using the confederate flag as a symbol and waving it at their various rallies and demonstrations, but I find this to be an unsatisfactory answer as I've never actually seen this to be the case, in person or in photos/videos. However, the US flag and the Gadsden flag (the one with either the cut up snake reading "Join or Die" or the coiled timber rattlesnake with the words "DONT TREAD ON ME") often are present and not commonly viewed as symbols of racism or hate, so I suspect this explanation is pure B.S. and used as an excuse to hate rather than a primary cause.

I honestly don't know how you are coming to these conclusions. Historical and current white supremacist marches have this flag brandished everywhere. Seeing as your profile says you are a US citizen, it makes my bafflement all the more intense. I live in the Deep South and I can't walk anywhere in my town without seeing Trump bumper stickers and confederate flags everywhere and the people they are associated with are always white supremacists. You literally cannot have one without the other. If you won't do more thorough research, take it from a native southerner, this flag only means hate.

Would you mind posting a picture? I hit up Google street view near where a friend of mine lives in Jackson, Mississippi and didn't actually see flags of any sort, so they can't be terribly common. Perhaps you just live in a vexillologically-rich area? Or perhaps I was just looking in a poor one?
Anyway, my confusion stems from the fact that what people say contradicts observed reality. It's certainly possible I haven't been exposed, but it's also possible that this is a legitimate anomaly. People seem to talk about one flag (the Confederate flag) and then rally against another (the Confederate battle standard) and act as though they both have a shared history and meaning. None of the historical explanations I have heard include the commonly shown battle standard, none of the samples I have been shown have the confederate flag visible, and this perplexes me.
For modern examples, again, this battle standard is often shown by white supremacists, but then again, so are the US and Gadsden flags, which are NOT viewed as symbols of racism or hate.
There's something missing in the story here, and it's this missing piece that I want to know more about. It's fine if you don't know, but I was hoping you did since you seemed knowledgeable in the subject.

Also the Gadsden flag is commonly used by racists (that whole "rebel" and "the south will rise again" mentality and its connotations reek of white supremacy and no small amount of hatred for minorities in general. I don't know how you managed to be so sheltered from this but it's astounding really.

Okay, so there are flags in the photos you linked.. Many flags. The US flag was present along with the Confederate battle standard, though. So again, what I don't understand is the difference. Why is the battle standard in particular that is viewed as a racist symbol and not the others? Why is hate directed towards that one? This is the missing piece I'm looking for.

That battle standard (a.k.a. A flag of the confederate or confederate flag (same thing)) is a symbol of a war fought to preserve slavery in the south. Flags like that only have a place in a history museum and not for brandishing in public (I can't get photos because I would literally be putting my personal health at risk) so you're gonna have to take my word for it. If you still don't get it, after all this, do me a favor and block me.
