So... some behind the scenes information?

The Origins:
I originally came up with the idea of having Smith, Cumberbatch and Freeman meeting, with Cumberbatch in a tweed jacket and bow tie, Smith in Watson's clothes and Freeman in Arthur Dent's pyjamas. It was meant to be a kind of sketch where Smith and Cumberbatch understand each others costumings, because of the article that Cumberbatch was offered the role of the Doctor, but they wouldn't have understood Freeman's costume.

I scrapped this idea, though I may still do it one day, for this one, which I think runs better. It's also for a competition where Doctor Who crosses over with another show, though in this case it's two. That's why there are several in-universe references and why they are the characters and not the actors.

The Plot:
The Doctor falls through a hole in the time vortex and lands in a parallel universe where fictitional characters are real. There, he meets Sherlock Holmes and Arthur Dent, along with a Vogon.

When the Doctor talks about parallel universes, Sherlock says he doesn't understand, a reference to the fact he didn't know the Earth revolved around the Sun. He then confuses Arthur Dent with John Watson, and asks why he's letting the Vogon tie him up when John would never let him do it. This is a reference to the popular fan pairing of the two being in a gay relationship.

The Doctor then tells Sherlock that it is a Vogon and not to panic, a reference to the book, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, on the front cover of which the words DON'T PANIC are written.

One thing to note: In the Whoniverse, Arthur Dent was aparrently real, as mentioned by the Doctor in The Christmas Invasion when he said fighting the Sycorax leader in his dressing gown was "Very Arthur Dent, now there was a nice man." However, in this particular instance, I'm saying the Doctor had previously travelled to this universe and met him.
