Once again, great work!
May I ask you a question? I'm about to start my first graphite portrait (I've been working with charcoal so far). Can you tell me in which sections of the drawing did you use the carbon pencils? Do you use them on the darkest shadows of the face, hair and background? Do you have any special technique regarding the carbon pencils? Thanks! Keep up the amazing work!Β

Thanks, no problem,no special technique with the carbon pencils, just a little powder-ish that's all, soft blending clears it,Β Β here's a brief rundown, all the hair [including eyebrows] and shadows and pupils, nostrils etc were done with 4b and 6b carbon pencils, I started on the darkest side [of the face]Β first using a 4b carbon in circular motions, [early layers blending with a soft brush] picking out little pits as I go, always giving each one a highlight.[tombow mono zero eraser]Β I worked my way down the dark side and onto the chin where I moved into graphite, 4b then 6b [staedtler mars lumograph] all same motion as before, up the right side of face basically working dark areas to mid tones then light, onΒ  my mid tone areas Id use 2b-hb, then by the time only my lightest values were left,Β  [hb-4h] which pretty much took care of themselves as the darker areas already dictated them. The background was done pretty quickly with some powder. Hope this helps, any questions Im happy to help...

Bob's still out there strumming away, the last I heard.Β  Nice portrait of him.
The sound he put out most recently is a straight blues, which suits the way
his voice is these days.Β  The folksinger outlasted most of the cold warriors.

I'm almost ashamed to say I've only recently been converted to his greatness, a friend of mine has hammered his music into my consciousness for a few years now, truly one of the finest songwriters ever to grace the music world, live long Bob.

Β Β  Bob Dylan was one of the songwriters I used to hear on radio a lot.Β
Local radio stations in my hometown would play his records as part of
a rotation of classic tunes from the 1960s and 1970s, with "Rainy Day
Women" being a staple of their programming.Β  He still got some air-
play well into the 1980s, but the new wave of techno-pop and "hair
band" metal eventually buried him and relegated his music to special
"oldies" programming.Β  The fact that he is still performing well into his
70s shows how a man can thrive on his musical and songwriting talent
even decades after others have gone into retirement.

Myself and some mates dig out the kayaks and boats most free weekends and head up to Loch Lomond where we paddle over to one of the many islands there and camp for a few days, drunk men around a campfire either singing or listening to songs, this was pretty much my first real hearing of Dylans work, sitting there in the dark by the fire with his music playing had a very real effect on me, timeless, all the great artists have their time at the top, the true greats returning several times, there can be no doubting the mans genius or his catalogue of work will live on for century's to come, not many can make that claim.
