Description
It's a real wip, I mean I'm still on it.Drawings on the left are preparatory sketches (it's done on printer paper), on the right it's where I'm supposed to do the more polished drawing (bristol).
I'm not super happy with the drawing on the right.
Source drawing I tried to change the way characters are drawn (I prefer the earlier style of Peyo (like mid 50's and early 60's) even if I didn't succeed in what I was aiming to do).

Me too ! Johan and Peewit aren't that famous (at least no as much as the smurfs) but they seem to do ok anyway ^^

amazing job~
It's nice to see the planning and inking as well as the variant line weight!
I like the composition too. I knew the scene from the moment I saw Pirlouit holding the hammer! I look forward to seeing the finished piece!
Bien cuit !
Il fait beau de voir la planification et le tracé aussi bien que la ligne poids variable !
J'aime la composition aussi. J'ai su la scène du moment où j'ai vu Pirlouit tenir le marteau ! J'attends avec intérêt de voir la partie de finition !

Hey thanks a lot (for this nice comment, and for all of the favourites ! I really appreciate this !
Yeah, I still have issue to invent scenes. But I might start to do so. It's been some weeks since I upload it, I wasn't very happy with the look of the characters on the drawing which was supposed to be the final one (on the right) (for instance I think I prefer the Johan located on the far left of the left sheet), so I needed time to see what was going to change and so on.
That being said I think that Johan et Pirlouit are one of my favourite comic book characters. I rediscovered them not a long time ago, but I remember that I might have read almost all of the books once as a child, and loving it. I think it showed a fantasy middle age as I wanted to see at that time.
Passe une bonne journée, et merci encore !

I agree. I never had a chance to read the comics as they weren't available in the US due to complicated licensing restrictions. I hope to get them one day, as they too are my favorite comic book characters.
I think your line work is incredible, you have kept the weight similar to Peyo's with just enough nuance to show folds of cloth and movement. I always love how Peyo did more with less. His artistic style doesn't follow the same restriction as say Hergé's Tin Tin, but it isn't all over the place either.
Have you seen the classes offered at the comic museum in Brussels?

I didn't know ! So you discovered them in a tv show? It seems there isn't any English translation of the comics, that's odd. If you read French they released some really neat editions of the comics ( www.amazon.fr/Johan-Pirlouit-L… ) but shipping cost and custom may be an issue.
Thank you ! I try to stay close from the original because I really like the style of the artist I'm copying.
Yeah I think that Peyo has less realism in mind than Hergé. Ithink it's more cartoony compared to the most famous era of Tintin's design (I'd say from 1938 (King Ottakar's sceptre) to the death of Hergé).
No I haven"t, I don't live very close to Brussels. But I'd like to do something like that (even I'm older than the age limit of those classes (the one you showed me)). Have you done something like this?

I've done some stuff, but I still have a long way to go. It's just a little something but a publishing house here in America just finished translating "The Cursed Country" and has included it a Smurfs anthology.
I hope to get that volume to slowly expand on my collection which includes The Black Arrow, The Magic Flute (Flute with Six Holes). Eventually, I want to get them all including Night of the Sorcerers, The Desert Rose, and the Troubadors of Roc-A-Pic.
Here is some of my work:

A long way to go, you're saying that about learning drawing? I think that I've still a long way to go on that.
Oh that's neat ! You have a nice collection. I still don't own every albums. But I'm not sure I'll buy the after Peyo albums, I'll see.
Your drawing are nice ! I like the fact you're drawing the characters your way. It allows you to do your own drawing more than what I'm doing.

Yes, I haven't mastered that distinct line that is typical of Belgium/French comics. BTW I would love to have a copy of your finished work! I can hang it in my son's room. (We have a Johan Pirlouit theme going on.
) BTW what do you use to ink with? Do you use a dip pen or brush?
they were part of the "Smurfs" tv show that was made by Hanna Barbara back in the 80's. I also remember an animated movie that came out in '86 of an older animated film (apparently) of the Smurfs and the Magic Flute. It never made it to the movie theatres but remained a direct to video movie. Yet, it was my favorite film as a child because it featured Johan and Pirlouit in a way that was different from the tv series. The smurfs were odd, they were more like the original intention (imps) so that threw me as I was used to the Hanna Barbara versions.
I do want to get the post Peyo albums because I really like Yvan Deleporte too and I'm curious to see how well Thierry Culliford did on the stories.

I didn't want to imply that not mastering this style was a bad thing ! But it's a little difficult to copy perfectly, I have the same issue with Hergé's style. I think it's because those drawing are sometimes very simplified and it's difficult to figure the proportions of the character, how a piece of clothing is put on the character and so on. (it's only an idea I'm not sure it's the real reason).
You mean like a print? (on deviant art). I never did this ! I'd be happy if you get one especially for a child's room ! I'm trying redo the drawing (I was having issue adding the rest of the characters).
I mainly use brush and indian ink. (I'm using marten brush, for the lines. And I use some cheaper ones (bigger too) when I want to put a big part of my drawing in black). I have some dip pen, but I'm always worried to go through the paper with one (and finding different type of dip can be difficult (and a bit expensive for something I don't know how to use very well). I'd say liners are nice too.
You're right ! I think I'll try to read them before saying they're not interesting ^^
Oh yes the tv shows ! I don't remember well of the smurf's ones, I just remember enjoying watching them, but I didn't see it as a child. I recently saw a part of the magic flute, as far as I can tell it seemed very faithful to the book.

deviantart.com/art/Johan-et-Pi… Here is a sketch of the new start of the drawing.
I already use bristol from time to time, this kind. I didn't pick the paper very carefully, I wanted to try it so, after some time, I pick up some in a shop. I kind of like it. But I should try other kinds.
I'm using some white gouache for corrections. Never tried the ink, I maybe try to give a go one day.
Yes Hergé is an artist complicated to mimic or at least not as easy as it appears (the same can be said about Peyo, and many other artists).
Thanks ! I spent some time looking at original drawing and it's quite nice to see the corrections, the variations of color of the ink. You can have a better idea of how it has been made. Sketches are maybe even better. For instance: www.sothebys.com/content/dam/s… (it's maybe not the most interesting example, it's too perfect ^^)
galerie-opa.com/WebRoot/Store2… (it isn't Peyo but someone working for his studio).
www.lamarquezone.fr/images/Ima… (this one is just super impressive ! I know that Hergé didn't draw the cars, but still all done by hand...)

Nice. I've used a "G" pen with Indian Ink on bristol board with v. good results. www.dickblick.com/products/spe…
Also Canson makes some really nice comic paper and it's affordable too. www.dickblick.com/products/can…
Also Strathmore makes a similar product: www.dickblick.com/products/str…
I like how they're already pre-printed with the print instructions and pretty much set up so all you have to do is add the frames. The paper also holds the ink well and holds up against erasing.
Oh and for correcting try using an opaque white such as this: www.dickblick.com/products/zig…
It will save a ton of heartache! Also it's very good for adding in effects later.
I'm not sure if this company ships abroad but with the exchange rate it may still be cheaper than going to a "brick and mortar" art store.
****
Herge has a very distinct style, he rarely has weight to his line, but keeps it all very uniform. This uniformity gives everything a very clean look but it's a bitch to replicate well.
Oh and here. Check out this little drawing schematic for Johan. jjblain.pagesperso-orange.fr/n…
I've also uploaded some animator's reference sheets from the Hanna Barbara cartoon in the gallery of as a help too.

I have no idea right now, some kind of dark-fantasy if I think about setting, but yet no storyline, no characters etc...
