Description
We’ve been sitting at the lunch table and Bandit Lee has yet to say one fucking word. Not even hi. I want to know what’s been up with her, but I don’t want to make her uncomfortable. But who am I kidding? Her bitchy tirades are confusing and I want to know. And my genius skills kicked in. Sort of.“So what the hell is your problem lately?” I looked at her. She did look like shit, but unless I’m looking to get castrated… I’ll keep my mouth shut, thank you very much.
“Everything.” My eyes rolled and my hand waved, prompting her speech. “I mean, for some reason I’m really pissed off lately. Actually.. I know why.” The last part was mumbled as if I wasn’t supposed to hear.
“So tell me. What am I going to do? Shun the one person who gave me a chance as the new weird kid?”
Nervous. That’s all I could say about the way she was acting and looked.. Her makeup looked more like a raccoon that had just rolled out of bed. The hair was starting to show her roots, and that never happened with Ban. Chipping nail polish, ripped jeans, old chucks. This is not the girl I’ve come to know.
“Well. See. My dad’s scared that I’m going to turn out a reject or something. He said it wasn’t natural. I mean, look at him! But I’m.. Supposed to be different I guess. And my mom doesn’t stick around all that much. You’d think things were going okay… But…”
“Are they going okay?” She shook her head slowly.. A contemplating look on her face.
“I don’t think so. I’ll catch the end of a fight, or wake up in the middle of the night and notice that mom’s gone. Or one of them is on the couch… On the laptop. They aren’t together very often. And both are.. Such hypocrites. How can two total misfits try and make their daughter popular? It’s not like you and Air aren’t cool and all but.. Boyfriend? Too creepy for me.”
“Me too. Do you think..” But once that much got out, I shut it up real quick. There’s no way I’m going to even put that thought into her head, not if she wasn’t the one to put it there.
“Sadly, Yes. I do.”
Four Months Later.
Yes. They did get a divorce, and it wasn’t nasty, as we thought it would be. It didn’t end up all over the papers. Lindsay left. She wasn’t always there for Bandit, not after a certain point. We now were getting ready for summer. There was graduation, and everyone was free. Gerard gave up on the idea of anything going the way he wanted for Ban. All he wanted was a normal teenager’s life, but as Bandit finally made him realize, this was normal for her. She hadn’t ever been social, and never really would be. It was coming up, and she had yet to go shopping.
“I don’t know if I want to wear a dress to graduation. I mean, how cliché can I be?”
“Honey. You have to wear a dress.”
“I’m not going.” Air had been out of town much more frequently, And now he dropped that he wasn‘t going to graduation? “And I might move in with my mom.” I’ll spare you and leave out the emotional shit that Bandit and her increasingly gay-acting father laid on him. Essentially, they were pissed. I, on the other hand, saw it coming three years in the distance.
They didn’t get along very well, him and his dad. But there wasn’t anything too bad going on because of his father.
Back to the store.
“How about this one?” She looked stunning. Her dark brown hair was fully grown out now, and was being sunbleached much to her dislike. Eyes were rimmed with black thinly and a much wider red, and she had pale skin and barely darker lips that were full and set into a firm pout. The dress was white, and was cut to be strapless. It graced her ankles, and had a beautiful corset bodice. Fancy words? That’s the description I was given from the sales woman.
“Why don’t you go look?”
“Me?” I asked. Why was everyone looking at me? I’m the weird kid that’s following around the gorgeous punks. No one really noticed.
“Yes you! If Air’s not going then who do you think I’m going to the after party with?”
“Oh.” I grinned after I realized she just expected me to go along, and follow like a puppy. “What if I had a date already? And is that your way of asking me out?”
“Please. I know you don’t have a date. You and dad were talking about it on the way over here to this hellhole. And honestly, if I wanted to be with you, I would’ve asked you out long ago. So grow some balls and go find me a damn dress!”
“Language, Bandit Lee. Der, Go find the God Damn dress already?!” I rolled my eyes slightly. This family loves nicknames. I walked a little ways away to somewhat attempt looking for something I’d never even thought about looking for until three minutes ago.
“Hey, man. Listen, I’m gonna head out.” I nodded to Aaron. He giggled pretty girlishly. “They got you on shopping duty or do you have some interesting life on the side I don’t know about? You aren’t a drag queen right?”
“Nah. I’ll leave that to Frank and Gerard. They look way to good as chicks, anyways. Alright. See you later.”
Three dress racks later I saw something. It almost looked discarded. The dress looked to go about half calf, there was tulle at the top, strapless, and had red underlay. I fell in love, and knew it would be something she would love too.
“Hey Ban!!” I tossed it to her when she poked her head out of the dressing room. “Try this one.”
She stepped out, and my jaw hit the floor.
“Have you seen the Helena video, Derrick?”
“No.”
“Well then, you’re psychic. Or have really good taste in dresses.” She giggled. “You don’t go dressing as a drag queen with Frank in your spare time, do ya?”
“Why is everyone trying to make me out to be a drag queen?”
“Cause you’re gay. Or bi, Whatever. All the same to me.”
“I’m not gay!!” But of course. She didn’t believe me, and just smirked up from underneath her way-to-long bangs.
She looked flawless. I want to dance with her now, because if it's our last shebang this year, I want everyone's eyes on her. Not that she'll need any help.
Not in that dress.
