What kind of brush style do you use for the shading? I never seem to get the effects I want with any brush I use.

Hi!

Im a photoshop newbie and im working my way through your tutorial, i just had a question or two.

While working in the "shading" and "lighting" layers, do you wanna have your paint brush on any certainy opacity or flow settings? Also are those layers set to normal with full opacity or do you adjust those in any way?

Thanks for your time and work

Jimbo

MCsaad In reply to ogjimkenobi [2008-03-11 13:09:38 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I use both layers on full opacity. I configure my brush normally to 70% opacity and I use dynamics and other dynamics (controled by pen pressure, you must use a tablet in order to use pen pressure).

But that's all. ^^

And sry about the bad english!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ogjimkenobi In reply to MCsaad [2008-03-11 15:43:49 +0000 UTC]

Dynamics? I have a Wacom tablet and I been using it but im still a noob, what are dynamics? Are they settings i can find in photoshop or part of the tablets program?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MCsaad In reply to ogjimkenobi [2008-03-11 23:03:18 +0000 UTC]

You just got to go to the brush pressets window and configure your "dynamics", wich are options that allow you to control some properties of the brush only by the pressure it makes agains your tablet.

You can control opacity, blur, shape, size, and other things only with the pressure you make with your pen.

you're a genius, i totally never thought about square objects having sharp shadows and circle objects (or rounded) having soft shadows...

Well.. that's usefull when painting.. I never do sharp shadows on the cheeks, for example, but I do sharp shadows over the eyebrows...

glad for the kind words ^^

very educational =]

but i wouldn't use more than one layer for the colouring XD;; and if i did i'd merge it later 83

I use something about 30 layers...

Shaz-da-baz In reply to MCsaad [2008-02-21 14:11:46 +0000 UTC]

lol XDD 30 layers is a lot O:

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MCsaad In reply to Shaz-da-baz [2008-02-21 14:49:31 +0000 UTC]

oh.. that was my work with less layers XD

But it's because, and don't use only two layers, the "shadding" and the "lighting" as I said on the tutorial..

I use a lot of shadding layers and a lot of lighting layers

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Shaz-da-baz In reply to MCsaad [2008-02-21 14:50:47 +0000 UTC]

lol i know XDD but having so many layers is confusing i find it easier just to work on 2-3 layers 8D

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MCsaad In reply to Shaz-da-baz [2008-02-21 14:59:22 +0000 UTC]

Oh.. It can be very confusing, but I gorup then thoghter, so it's easier to find myself while drawing.

And also, having many layers makes your work fully editable!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Shaz-da-baz In reply to MCsaad [2008-02-21 15:09:11 +0000 UTC]

lol true XD but its still editable while having only a few layers ;D

Hmm, that lineart part is pretty much the same I started trying out recently. With some exceptions. I've used 1 pixel thin lines for now, but I guess I could give thicker ones a try.

Materials have always been a bit of a problem for me... And the reflection... Sounds like another thing that I should probably try in my works, but which I'll probably end up forgetting (among many other things. I sear, one of these days I forget to draw their hair... or ears... or the whole head...)

In any case, nice tutorial, despite some typoes (intentional?) in the sub-topics.

glad to know you liked, and it's just a matter of trying your best to achieve a good result.

By the way, what is "typoes" ?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LukkiStarr In reply to MCsaad [2008-02-21 14:06:25 +0000 UTC]

I use "typoes" as the plural of "typo". I don't know if it's correct. But I was referring to things like "beggining" and "shadding".

MCsaad In reply to LukkiStarr [2008-02-21 14:12:08 +0000 UTC]

oh.. I'm horrible on choosing the step names... but i didn't wanted to put "Step 1" "Step 2" ...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LukkiStarr In reply to MCsaad [2008-02-21 22:52:46 +0000 UTC]

It's not that. I'm just saying that shouldn't those be "Beginning" and "shading" instead of double consonants? Not "beGGining" or "shaDDing". Beginning and shading. Catch my drift?

I just remembered people pointing out typoes are annoying. TT___TT Am I being annoying?

also, I have NEVER thought of light from clothes being reflected. ;A; that part was really worth reading.

That's one of my techniques for the final adjustments.. but you don't have to do it, most of people don't.
