“OH BEANS, OH CRUMBS, OH SWEET MOTHER OF-” Diogee fled from the evil looking goop for what seems to be the thirteenth time, sandwich still in paw. They have been bobbing and weaving through the thick vines and leaping over the large roots like no tomorrow. This is probably the most exercise I’ve had in months! Diogee thought while they zipped past the many trees. It was surprising how much stamina and speed the little bagbean had. However, it was not long after that that their breath began to get ragged. Everything looked the same in the dense jungle.
The clangs of swords and exclamations from the party members seemed to have disappeared now. Good thing the distorted brrps and vrrps from their void doppelganger have gone too. All was replaced with the rustle of the leaves, their hectic footsteps and their short shallow breaths. They quickly hid behind a large tree trunk. Quietly, they caught their breath and scanned the area. Silence filled their ears. It soon dawned on Diogee that they had strayed too far from the party. Dread occupies all corners of their mind and threatens to leave at the corners of their shiny eyes. They grip their paws and inhale. A faint but pleasant aroma flowed from below.
At least I still have my sandwich, Diogee convinces themself. They look down at their treasure, mouth watering. It’s probably dirty now, but gosh dang it! Loneliness be damned, this right here will make everything better again. Finally, a moment alone with that sweet savoury sliced bread goodness they’ve been saving for the trip! Diogee nears the (not) pure white bread towards their mouth , closing their eyes. Just one bite…
Their void doppelganger coughs awkwardly at the side.
Diogee shrieks like a griffling, nearly losing their handle on their precious. Nearly.
“OH COME ON DUDE! I’m so flipping HUNGRY. Please just leave me be!” the field bagbean desperately pleaded, their voice faltering at the end. For some reason, Diogee doesn’t run away this time. Instead, the two stared at each other. Maybe it was due to their dangerously stupid curiosity, or just being plain tired from running, but Diogee actually waited for a response.
The shadow was still, as if it was processing what they had said. Then, it looked down at the sandwich. Diogee gasped and immediately moved it away defensively. The shadow’s bright eyes followed it, fixated at the food. Diogee raised it up a bit more, putting as much distance as they could between the two. Finally, the goop reverted its attention back to the holder, Diogee, and tilted its head with a blank expression. The ears flopped a bit too. Suppressing the urge to give in to the rather cute gesture, Diogee carefully thought of their response.
“No.”
Needless to say that was the wrong answer, and unfortunately for Diogee, the black and purple mess instantly became aggressive. The doppelganger’s once round innocent white sockets became triangular and seethed unholy crookedness, like it was a haunted jack o'lantern. It sounded like it was growling with its body producing heavier vrrps too. Then, it lunged at its counterpart and climbed on them to reach for the sacred sandwich! Diogee yelped and regretted opening their dumb mouth but soon found the hunger and rage again.
They were absolutely hangry.
It didn’t matter that the shadow felt and smelled like expired slime from the Dollar store, Diogee was determined to consume this damn sandwich all to themself! Diogee bit their doppelganger’s side. The shadow winced and redirected their icky paws to their glasses, smearing it as it tried to push the stubborn head away. Diogee fought through the bitter taste of void again as they bit its paw and flung it away, its back hitting against a tree. Surprisingly light for a shadow.
Towering over the said shadow, Diogee raised their sandwich above their head in both paws.
SPLAT! … SPLAT SPLAT SPLAT … SPLATSPLATSPLAT-
Diogee smacked it down as hard as they could. Just to make sure, a handful more times after that too.
Now, it is just a lifeless goop pile on the grassy floor. Diogee breathed. They wiped away the void from their glasses and analysed what they did. The task was done. Suddenly, their ears perk up.
The humdrum of random but harmonious noise was rising. A soft breeze blowing through the leaves, buzzing of various insects and budbirds chirping happily in the treetops, to name a few. Most importantly, indistinct voices from a group of griffolk some distance away. The atmosphere of the jungle seemed to be warm again.
Diogee follows the sound of friends out of the woods. Greeted by the community tending to each other’s wounds and winding down from their battles. Thank Amina everyone is okay, Diogee breathes a sigh of relief. They join back the party and plop down, resting against a rock. They weakly hold up their sandwich towards their face hole. Heavy, tired eyes closing. Finally, they can eat in peace. Layers of void caked on this sandwich but, it’s still a sandwich.
NOM
It tastes… Like nothing?
Diogee forces an eye open. Their paws are empty. A sword piercing the ground, and their sandwich stabbed right through, at their side. “Don’t eat that! It’s been infected by pure EVIL!” Quest bravely announces. A beam of light appeared out of nowhere to picture the hero while he posed ‘Your welcome’ at Diogee. They stared daggers back at him. Quest chuckles obliviously and backflips out.
Diogee was defeated, but not by today’s void rift.
