I guess, it's based on this old concept. I made it a bit less human looking, gave it dog's legs, three toes and fingers and beefed up the crest a bit. (The native in the old pic is wearing a bone mask)

A lot of them are, some just like to keep to themselves. Some might attack you on sight, others might just watch you from a distance until you are out of their territory.
