Description This was made some time ago for our, OldBoy's (known here as ) and mine, joint project. It's a little discussion, the two seasons' of MLP:FiM comparison.
On the left is my ponysona, and his one on the right.
The word in the background is quite untranslatable (at least with my skills). Literally, it's an illiterate combination of words "brony" and "ironclad" in Russian. It's Ok if you cannot see any sense ^__^
Here is the video (it's completely in Russian) [link]

Due to some circumstances (mostly, me being lazy before), I have some hot time at work and studies right now, so it's an I'm-Going-to-Hiatus picture of a sort. Occasional drawings can still be expected.

A5, Indian ink, watercolour pencils.

So what was the verdict? Which season did you each enjoy better, and what points did you make?

I can't speak Russian, but I'm really interested to know

Well, we discussed two seasons by several categories, like stories quality, graphical quality, primary, secondary characters' development, antagonists, music and so on. We had some common points, that second season had raised its overall technical quality, secondary characters were developed better; that main characters were shown better in the first season, and that the first season was more solid. Actually, there were not so much of brand-new opinions, it was more like a compilation of all known (to us) facts and points.

Anyway, we both stayed with each other's original opinion. He enjoyed the season two better, with its stories a bit more mature and adventure-like, and also more interesting and thought-out antagonists. And I'm better with first season, I like its cosy atmosphere, how solid it is. And also, I, uhm, dislike some S2-episodes [:

This is telling-short, of course, I might miss or forget something, it was two hours long, after all (:

Which episodes did you dislike from S2? I personally remember seeing "Lesson Zero" and feeling distraught after watching it 5 times. It felt like a completely different show. Many episodes after that I felt were not all that interesting for me, it felt more like a standard cartoon.

The writing in the first season is very solid, very few drops in quality, especially as far as characters. The friendship dynamic was very strong and believable; I feel like many episodes in Season 2 weren't as convincing in depicting relationships.

I dig, thanks for the summary anyway!

I had similar feelings, it felt like a different cartoon. I went ponies when Season Two was already being aired, and I watched it as a single series, from S01E01 to S02E06. So I actually didn't know that time that it's divided into two seasons. I must say Return of the harmony was sort of cold shower to me. After Best night ever it seemed much more mature (am I using proper wording?) and cruel. And I also didn't like how writers used "da magics" of Discord to explain characters' splits. Why Fluttershy was mean, why Applejack lied? That's magic, guys. I like how first season mostly used "inner" reasons for conflicts and their solutions. And, well, RotH was a bit too much to me, so it's one of episodes I usually don't rewatch.

I also dislike Putting your hooves down. I think, in this episode, the whole Ponyville was OOC. Of course, I totally accept that ponies can be mean and insensitive and whatnot, but in PyHD it looked simply off to me.

And, my fiery butthurt, A Canterlot wedding. If you want an episode which is the worst to me, it is ACw. I don't like its out-of-nowhere new characters, I don't like its cartoonish (in a bad sense of this word) antagonist, I don't like how Cadence used her magic on a couple (that breaks the morale of Hearts and hooves day) and its idea of epicness prevailing over characters' relationships. I also don't like how the episode's action was developed through fortuity and Chrysalis's actions only. I would be Ok with any of these points appearing separately through the series, but they were in a single (Ok, double ^__^) episode. This Day Aria is one of my favourite songs of the series, though.

Just for the reference, my favourite episodes of Season Two are Ponyville Confidential (though I think the ending is a bit off), Sisterhooves Social, Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6k, Sweet and Elite, Cutie Pox and Hurricane Fluttershy. Well, it's what I recalled right now (:

P.S. Sorry for a late reply.
P.P.S. What means "I dig"? [:

The late reply is okay.
"I dig" is old hippie lingo for "I understand" or "I agree."

I agree about most of this. Season 2 is definitely a different show, with different creators at the helm whose vision I don't really care for. It's good to know there are people that share my opinion.

It was tough for me because I got into the show only 4 months after the first season began, so I followed it for almost year before Season 2 started. I thought Return of Harmony was good, but the pacing was bad and the ending a bit thrown together. That and the Luna episode are the only 3 episodes I actually can stand to watch from S2 really. The characters just seem way off, not as natural. It was difficult for me, I was obsessed with the show in S1, then to fall out so harshly from it when it wasn't something I liked any more, and most people in the fandom didn't even seem to notice or care :/

So, the whole season but three episodes seems to you featuring unnatural characters? But what about Sisterhooves Social, Cutie Pox, SSCS6k, Sweet & Elite, Ponyville Confidential, Hearts and Hooves Day, Hurricane Fluttershy, Family Appreciation Day? As for me, SisSoc, Cutie Pox were the most first-season-like in the S2, by its stories and characters' interactions.

They don't seem -totally- unnatural, just different. The ones you mention, especially Cutie Pox and Sisterhooves Social, just seemed honestly kind of uninteresting to me. Not offensive or off-model, just not really engaging or special. My opinion! Not objective fact! None of the ones you mention really connected with me; I was judging based on the fact that if I had seen them before falling in love with S1, would I care at all? What made them special? I couldn't find a satisfactory answer for myself, so I haven't really been watching any more. S1 is still very special to me though.

I agree that they were similar to S1, but nothing 'grabbed' me. An X factor seemed to be missing. For me. But yeah.

I'm totally Ok with opinions different to mine (:

I think, it's a very interesting question, how would FiM be accepted if Season Two would be aired first. For me, a huge part of why I loved FiM, was its overall feel, similar to old soviet cartoons which I loved in my childhood (that time, I happened to miss the western and japanese animation almost completely).

Now I'm waiting for the Season Three with mixed feelings. I try to avoid spoilers, but what I've seen occasionally looks somewhat... I don't know, there seems to be moar of ACW style episodes.

I think I see what you mean, judging from the few old soviet cartoons I have seen, but I think it had a nostalgic feel, no matter where you are from -- it really did feel like meeting old friends.

Yeah, it looks like it's all big showiness now... people will eat it up, I'm sure. Nice and entertaining on the surface of course. The art looks pretty at least...! (shrug)
