I understand for sentimental, or reminders To help him "keep moving forward" but why would he keep one that is radioactive considering they needed suits just to hold it?

Honestly that was my first thought also, but I'm willing to say, maybe the time warp messed up and caused the ship to turn into that, but your guess is as good as mine.
