Description
Each figure is about 2 inches tall or just under, and I sculpted these out of Supersculpey Firm. This is a project I've been working on for a couple months between other art stuff! I have been a HUGE fan of mini figure toys like Monster in My Pocket, and M.U.S.C.L.E....and it turns out people still make and collect these styles of figures!
All character designs and artwork is Copyright 2013 Angela Pileggi (AKA, AMP, Meadowknight).

Monsters in My Pocket... Completely forgot about it, but I used to have some of those as a kid. Hah.
These are cool, but of course the wolf is my favourite.

Yeah I still have all mine, some are up in my room, lol!
Thanks! I'm super excited about these...I'm beginning to plan a kickstarter to get them made into PVC hopefully! At some point I would like to do a larger Big Rad Wolf figure too...and maybe Kickstart it to get it made into vinyl.

So do you have plans to extend this monster line-up in the future, at least if they turn out to be successful? How about a mummy? Frankenstein type creature? Alien? Some weird robot? 8D

My current plan is to have some more made in rubber, and maybe resin to be hand cast for now (I'm having to look into another caster as I've had some problems with a couple people!)....but I'm discussing prices this week with a professional caster I have become friends with. He's done work on films, and for toy companies. He'll be hand casting some for me to sell if we agree to work together, and for me to use in a Kickstarter. I'm going to do a Kickstarter once everything is organized and prepared to get these factory made in PVC (that durable plastic most store bought toys are cast in). I'm estimating I may be ready to launch it around spring. The thing is, it costs a LOT of money (in the thousands) to pay for the factory injection molds...but many people have been able to raise funds for that with kickstarter ...so I'm going to try it! A handful of people on the toy forums believe i would be able to get the funding, since people love these types of toys and there's not that many people making them yet.
I do have big plans for the series if it's a successful Kickstarter. I'm actually working on a fifth figure for the first "Batch" (series), named Biosaurus, who's a little raptor character! I already have a story for him and have begun sculpting. With the Kickstarter I'll probably set the fundraising price high enough to have 3 out of the 5 characters factory made...and the remaining 2 as stretch goals if enough money is raised. It's a little safer to do it that way, I need to try to keep the fundraising goal as low as possible for it to happen....and I'll be researching factory prices this week or next.
I have 17 character ideas currently, a couple ARE robots ...not many aliens but some are alien-like monsters, I can make more aliens (Alien Ghostworm is an alien creature). I don't have any shortage of character ideas, so if I can get the funding I'll probably continue to make them! I have a little general story for their universe too! If the first Kickstarter is a success and they sell well once the factory is making them, the sales may help me fund another five characters at a later date.

Yeah, have to admit, BRD is my favorite. Brings back memories... kinda reminds me of Michael J. Fox, both in Back to the Future, and (in the 1985 movie,) "Teen Wolf".

Yeah, lol...he IS an 80's werewolf . You will definitely be getting one from me! I'll send one to you when I have them as a thanks for buying one of my dragons (which I'll be working on this week!)...right now they're on their way to England to be produced in the really nice rubber stuff. I'll be selling them in solid colors like traditional minifigures...and I'll also be hand painting some to sell! I'll post pictures here, but it may be a month or two
...it depends how long it takes the person who's casting to make them. He's going to be making a big batch to sell at new York Comic Con, so depending how busy he gets, I'll either be getting them in about a month, or around November. It just depends how long it takes him.
Do you have a preference of solid color or painted? Each have their charm in my opinion..the solid colors are nice because it gives full focus to the sculpt, and is a traditional style for mini figures ...but then paint is cool too!

Oh my stars and garters! *Happy Ferret Dancing™*
Hummm.... yes, choosing between solid and painted is a conundrum! I'll have to think about that for a bit... maybe see examples of each.
*Squeeee!* Ahem.

Lol! Well I'm glad you're happy .
If you want, what we can do...is I'll paint you one as a gift, and you can buy a blank one for $15 or $20 (whatever I end up having to charge, but probably $15 per figure)...that way if you decide you want both you'll be getting the more expensive painted one for free, and that $15 can cover what I pay per casting.
I think they can be cast solid in almost any color, and I think he has other colors not shown here...but you can see a few of the options here...these are some other figures other artists have made, that were cast in the same rubber . You see that blue that's mixed into some figures? I'm going to have some cast in solid blue...cause I love that color! But they'll probably end up in all the colors shown there....there used to be more in his shop but I think a lot sold out!--> manetoys.bigcartel.com/

You're welcome !
Just let me know when you decide on a color! I'm working on the illustration for these little guys between other work too (like painting your dragon and sculpting commissions I'm doing!)...so I'll have color schemes for all four characters soon for the illustration, which I'll be mirroring on the figures I hand paint. For the solid colors, personally I recommend blue, flesh tone, or purple...as they seem to show detail a bit better. But I think the person who will be casting these has other colors he can use that aren't actually shown there (he probably has colors like yellow, red, gray, and dark green, etc...but I'd have to ask!).

Would it be easier to post BRW and the dragon to me at the same time? As I said, I'm plotting to give the dragon as a Christmas gift to my hubby, so as long as it arrives by December, it's all good.
As for the solid colour BRW... I love the black colour I saw on the webpage, but if it won't show the details as well, I may want to pick either the purple, or perhaps a dark green or dark red. (I'm not fond of bright colours, especially not fond of 'glow in the dark'. I prefer cool colours, like darker shades of blue, green, purple, and blue-shifted red.)
What are your favorite colours?

Yeah, if you don't mind waiting I can do that and ship them together! I don't know exactly how long it will take to get my figures, but I've been told it won't be as late as November ...so that should work out! I'll keep you posted on it all though, and may still decide to ship your dragon first/separate if it's taking a while to get the figures. It shouldn't cost much to ship a couple tiny rubber guys, but we'll see! I should know a little more in a week or two
...I'm pretty anxious to get these, lol.
I'll ask about the color options when he gets my sculpts in hand to mold! I don't have any figures cast in black out of that rubber...I just know dark black resin is so dark it obscures details, so the same may be true for the rubber...and a figure can just look like a black spot at a distance. I think black works nice on larger pieces though....like statues and stuff.
My favorite colors in the rubber at least...are the blue (but you can only see some blue swirled in...it looks good on a full figure done in medium blue!)...cause it's kind of medium blue but still bright, without obscuring details. I like the blue, purple, and flesh tones the best for the solid color rubber. Sometimes red can obscure detail if it's too bright on small figures (I have some red mini figures of other toys and they're too bright). Flesh tone is a nice classic color for minifigures, isn't bright, and shows details....so the first colors I'll order for myself will be blue, purple, and flesh tone! I'm a BIG fan of glow in the dark, but more-so when I do a paint wash in black...so all the details still pop ...it's almost like having an illuminated 3D ink drawing
. My favorite color in general...is dark red though, so I'm going to ask if he has a pigment or can mix some to get like a maroon or deep red that would be a little more muted than a bright red.

Maroon or deep red would be cool. Or a medium-dark purple. Heh.
I don't mind waiting, and I figure if you ship them all together, you won't have to pay from your own pocket for the S&H on the BRW(s). (Not sure yet if I'm wanting a solid colour one, will have to see them first, but definitely like the notion of a painted one.)
I look forward to seeing the cast BRWs, and also seeing what my dwaggie looks like painted!

Thanks Ken! I'm glad you like Beast Blossom so much! In the minifigure crowd the others are getting a little more love than him, so I'm glad some people are enjoying Beast Blossom on here in particular
.
Crumpet is a food person/creature, lol....a crumpet is a British breakfast food, it's sorta like an English Muffin, but with the texture of a firm pancake. They're kinda bready/spongy. So King Crumpet has a head that's a crumpet, lol...I have a backstory for him too that I'll be sharing soon! but the off the top of my head version is...a wizard in jolly old England fancied himself as king (Dean's going to help me embellish it with as many British stereotypical words as possible, lol), and made a potion he had to ingest to become king...he had crumpets nearby and dropped the potion onto one of them. Before he could take a bite the crumpet became enchanted, punched him in the face...and ran off to conquer all England, lol. However King Crumpet is just a small little foody creature, and incapable of conquering ANYTHING, so he runs around ranting about domination, and all frustrated, lol. I have pics of each character at different angles I'll be posting this week...and I'll put each's story up on them. I kinda came up with him from always teasing Dean about crumpets since he's British. I'm always saying things like "Thought I smelled crumpets..." when he shows up online and such, LOL. He teasing me back saying I love burgers and guns since I'm American XD!! I ended up finding a toy of a little figure that says TEA on his chest and has a Teacup head, and thought to myself "Hmmm...need to get this for Dean and make a little crumpet character...so he can have tea and crumpets figures..." ...lol . Of course all in good fun/good natured! I actually love crumpets... I got to try them while out there and markets we have out here called Trader Joe's actually carries them! They have to have a lot of butter though to be at their best...so that's why he has a slab of butter on his crown and buttery words spelling "CRUMPET" on his chest, lol. I also put CRUMPET on his chest so people wouldn't think he was a cookie or something...since so many foods look similar.
Here's a photo of real crumpets. The backs of them are smooth...but the fronts are porous like this and the butter melts down into them. --> honeyandspice.files.wordpress.…

I mean Big Rad Wolf is awesome! and all the others too!
I can not wait to see what they look like painted! ^_^

Thank ya!
As far as I know they'll probably be around $15 a piece/per character! I need to ask if there will be any full set deals, it's just hard to keep the prices any lower since theses are essentially art toys, and aren't fully mass produced...each one is hand cast even though they'll be made in rubber making them still a toy/fully durable . The person who's going to be casting these in rubber, lives in England, and currently all four of these figures are in the mail on the way to him! I'm SUUUUPER excited
! I may not actually have any in hand for a month or more (probably November at the very latest)...because he's doing a really cool thing for me, and will be making a big batch to sell and promote at new York Comic Con. he said if he has time he'll get me a batch before NYCC, but if not he may have to wait until after. I'll have some I'll be selling, and he'll have some he's selling on his site, and prices will be the same...anything he sells on his site I'll be making a good % of the profit, which is cool because my work is pretty much done since he's doing the molding and casting
(except for the ones I paint of course..which I'll charge more for, for my time! ).
As for how I come up with the ideas, lol..it's not a stupid question...it's just one I have to answer carefully so I don't come across as arrogant, lol. I have a very vivid/strong/crazy imagination. It's just something I was born with that's been nurtured/encouraged by awesome parents and friends over the years! I've been creating my own original characters since I was a little girl, it's just tied directly to my art ability I think...some artists are like this...some are more fan art based, or go off other's designs. I have always wanted to be a concept artist (basically someone who comes up with original designs), and a sculptor. I think the way my brain works it out, and comes up with stuff is...my brain works a little like a detective sometimes, my brain picks things apart and puts them back together in ways I feel work, if that makes sense? So when I'm creating a character, I'll put various aspects of things I like together, but try to put the pieces together in a way that I haven't seen done before, or I'll take something that already exists that I like...and put my own spin on it to make it my own, while showing some admiration to the object of inspiration . I've done this process with all four figures here...and with everything else I create...my thoughts have gone a little something like this!;
Big Rad Wolf; Big Rad Wolf was my first attempt at sculpting a minifigure to become a toy. Mini figures were VERY popular in the 1980s and 1990s, that's sorta when they became popular in the US (I think it started in Japan earlier). I was born in 1982, and grew up LOVING small figures. I also love werewolves, and werewolves are kinda my signature art theme most people know me for so far (not a lot of werewolf sculptors out there it seems!)....so I thought "What would an 80s themed werewolf be/look like?"...the 80s theme being a nod to the time period this type of toy became popular. I also tried to adapt my art style similar to other minifigures, kinda cartoony but a little more detailed/comic booky...not too scary, not too ugly, and not too cartoony or cute. So I started thinking..what kind of elements would make an 80s werewolf in this style? What would people SEE and recognize as 1980s themed? What movies/styles, etc...were popular in the 80s?? So with these thoughts, I started combining ideas and that's how Big Rad Wolf was born! He has a vintage Walkman (everyone had those!)....he has fingerless gloves, his vest is the same vest Marty wore in Back to the Future, but the main character in American Werewolf in London also had a jacket of the same style (and that film is from 1981!)..."RAD" was a term used a lot at the time...the air guitar is a nod toward Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, and also an 80s thing. So that's sorta been my thought process coming up with him! I tried to squeeze in his theme in every aspect of the character, from his design, his name, down to his final pose. And I'll be using the same thought process for his paint job .
Alien Ghost Worm; When I grew up..I was obsessed with bug characters...glow bugs..and Ghostbusters! I also love bugs..so I will be making more buggy characters, lol...I have a handful of ideas for bug characters alone. So I tried to combine these inspirations into an original character with these mixed themes . The alien part was to add some extra fun to him, making him a little more original combining it with the buggy ghost elements. He didn't take a TON of thought, not every character needs as much reference...but knowing these thoughts you can probably see why he came out how he did
.
King Crumpet; The man I love out in England (not the same guy casting them in rubber..that's a different person, lol)...my guy, Dean...I am ALWAYS teasing about "tea and crumpets", since a crumpet is a very very British thing, and I'll sometimes say "I thought I smelled crumpets.." when he logs onto instant messenger or something, lol...and Dean in turn teases me, saying I smell like burgers and gunpowder being American XD!!I started thinkign how could I tease him with an actual character/sculpt. I've done this before to him...I sculpted him a miniature propane tank one year for Christmas and made it into a sparkly ornament XD, since he's always throwing them at me in a videogame we play, lol. I managed to find a minifigure called Teaman (or Teabag man), that's a wrestler who has a teacup for a head, and "TEA" is sculpted across his chest...this is the figure here, lol --> www.toplessrobot.com/048a0.jpg . I bought him the figure on eBay, and thought to myself "Hmm..I should sculpt a crumpet character to go with it...so he can have tea and crumpets figures, XD!! So then I started thinking "Hmmm...what would a overly British stereotype crumpet/minifigure character look like...."....so I took that inner question and branched off doing my detective thing, making connections! You always hear about kingdoms, kings, queens...castles...battles conquering different kingdoms....so I took those themes and made a KING crumpet..who's always out to conquer, lol. An angry little crumpet man, with big plans for conquest..but a little bready body, lol. And that's how he came about!
Beast Blossom; Beast Blossom, is actually a creature I designed/created when I was 12 or 13 years old that I had made up for a fantasy story. I thought it would be cool and kind of funny to have a monstrous flower...so I started asking myself as a kid, what would a monster flower look like...to make it REALLY off putting and strange. Since it's a beast/creature..I looked at animal pictures, and tried to pick animals that would normally never have combined features! So the face was based off a cross between a lion and a goat, with 100% monster teeth that don't look like either creature...and I named it "Dandylion" because I thought it was a funny name for a monster, lol. I ended up changing the design slightly for Beast Blossom, and changed the name from Dandylion to Beast Blossom...because people kept saying it looked too goatlike...since it was called DandyLION...they kept saying "Why is it called that? it doesn't look like a lion..."....and they were kinda missing the humor I was going for.....so that's how he was developed, and how he was altered into his current form . I try to adapt things sometimes if people are missing what I was originally going for...and now people are mroe focused on "Oh hey that's a cool creature!"...than just being confused by the name, lol.
Sorry for the novel but that's the kinda question that needs some explaining XD!

And once again I will so be buying one of your little creatures for sure! ^_^ As well that is so cool that your little monsters will be going to the new York comic-con! :0
Having an awesome imagination is never a bad thing lol! and yes what your saying makes complete sense, It's like taking apart an engine to understand how it works only doing it with art.
What you've done is amazing! All the fantastic thought you have placed in each character is amazing in and of it self! ^_^ The idea's behind them all are fascinatedly fun to know and give the characters even more depth beyond how amazing they look alone!
No worries! I asked for it and I'm glade I did, reading all your amazing thought proses was very fun and insightful into how you as an artist individually creates art. Thank you for explaining it!
