P. Regius is the regal jumping spider, P. Audax is the bold jumping spider. Very cute either way, I got some myself earlier in the month from the same site

I never knew anybody (until today) who kept jumping spiders as pets. We have tons of them here, although they're much tinier & nearly all black. I LOVE spiders, but I could never get my head around the jumping kind. It's nice to see someone keeps them well.

What kind of thing do you keep Paprika in to keep her from getting somewhere she can be squashed? I'd get one if I could find a place to keep it without it being in danger / me being scared that she could turn up in my bedsheets. xD

Lol..I keep her in a plastic jar, with holes poked in the top. I keep it upside down though, since spiders usually go to the top..that way i can easily open and close it without her being right by the opening. ONE time she did get away, because I had to walk off suddenly when I had the lid off to give her water. I found her a couple days later, she made a little web in some leather cord on something I had hanging on my wall, not far from where she got loose ...I just nudged her back into her jar and all was well
. Β they tend to stay up on walls and such..they don't go for beds or places they'd get squished thankfully. Read this site, this is also where I got her

It has the look of: I am tiny, FEAR ME!! Boy that little girl is tiny! Wow, didn't know you could order such a tiny spider xD! I'd be so afraid to loose her, she's just that small o.o!
Guess for now I'll just stick to tiny wild caught fuzzy caterpillars xD!

I once had one chase a laser light like a cat would! These are my favorite spiders and the only ones I'm not too afraid of.

This is so adorable!Β I've seen and owned many Phidipus regius, but I've never seen one of this color morph, just the black ones and the silver ones.Β From whom did you order her, by the way?

I think I get these little guys in my laundry room! They're about the size of a pinhead and can jump about 2 inches, which is several times their body length. Cute little guys

Aw so sweet O_O in case you don't know, jumping spiders have depth-capable sight, with forefacing eyes, meaning they are very aware of what is going on around them. They definitely see you, and they can even recognise human faces. They really have excellent sight. Congratulations she's beautiful!

She's adorable!
I've never had a pet spider, but I've seen lots of jumping spiders around the house and love them.Β I've even hand-fed them upon occasion, with stunned flies.Β The spiders move so fast, one feels like one should count fingers to make sure none disappeared with the fly! Β (It's the same when feeding a baby preying mantis, by the way.Β They snatch the stunned flies so fast, their movement is a blur!)

That's great you do that! It makes me sooooo angry when people kill spiders (unless it's a widow or a recluse and they have to). Β I can't even imagine someone killing a jumping spider...they are beyond cute and helpful. I have seen them around here too, but bought this one knowing I was getting a young female. i don't know how long the ones out here live, or which are the females...but I'm going to try to catch some this spring .Β

cool, I hate it to when people kill spiders, spiders do me a favor by keeping flys away, I have a fear of flys that I'm slowly getting over.

Yeah she's amazing! They are only $8 plus $5 shipping on the site linked in my description if you want to get one . They aren't at all dangerous, and there's care information on the website. the main thing to keep in mind is how tiny they are when you get them...which you cna tell by the photo
..so gotta be careful with them
. Females live longer if you decide to order one.

Holy cow she is so cute in a kinda creepy way but ya I don't think my parents would be happy with a pet spider for the moment. XD I would be so worried about losing her or stepping on her I would just beΒ worried all the time! lol
I assume if she is a jumping spider she dose jump some times right?

Well if it helps any they are 100% safe pets...and even if she did escape she'd just eat up any pesky moths or flies in the house . All you'd have to do is be careful since it's a small delicate creature...and if you read the page I linked, it has a caresheet that speaks about handling. They DO jump! But it's little short jumps, lol....and they ALWAYS (even when you can't see it)..have a silk web attached to their little butts. They can jump off your hand, and will hang there for a second on their webs then pull themselves back up to your hand, lol. I even had a pet one I caught once...and I'd let him out of his jar onto the carpet to feed him
..I'd drop a bug in front of him, he'd pounce it, then I'd guide him back into his jar while he was holding the bug in his fangs XD. Basically most spiders if not all, will view your hand as nothing more than a surface to walk on...you just have to trust them and then you won't be nervous too (if you still have any "they are creepy" thoughts in your head, lol).Β
Basically the way they move...they walk, and do little short forward jumps...it's really hard to lose one. Very similar to holding a frog, only smaller and they have a web so they won't go SPLAT on the floor, lol. But yeah you could tell your folks about them, they really are not dangerous at ALL, and don't get away easy. Everything I'm saying here you can Google and you'll get the same info . Β I'd actually feel 100% comfy even if I have ten loose in my room though, just to give you an idea of how good they are...not the type that bite people in their sleep, or get in the way. They are veyr similar to frogs the more I think about it, lol.

I have been talking with them about the little cuties and I am slowly working them down. XD and after hearing all this cool stuff about them and I looked on the website you linkedΒ I really just might get a jumping spider he he he... (this is once I can convince my parents o how cute they are. ) that sounds so cute about them jumping off your hand and then coming back on! I'm going to use the thought that they are like frogs I think that might work. Β and thanks for all the info on these cute little creatures, I never knew you could buy one as a pet! Β Β

Oh yeah, totally! These are friendly little spiders . Most are like this...I have held a ton. Once in a while I'll find one that just won't stay put on my hand (won't stop hopping), because they can have different personalities/temperaments....but for the most part, the ones I have picked up are pretty calm.

Meadowknight In reply to DanielBenner214 [2014-03-15 22:55:09 +0000 UTC]
Eh, don't be ashamed...they are very different than mammals and sometimes that makes people uncomfortable...I have liked bugs and arachnids since I was little (I was always picking up caterpillars and such). My only request to people who are freaked, is just not to kill them! They have a right to live, exist for a reason, and most are helpful not harmful. What makes me angry is when people kill them....so even if you do kill them, I'm just asking you not to from now on . One technique that works great (and I use this on ones that I don't feel comfy handling)...is you can put a clear cup (or any cup if you don't have a clear one) over the spider....then slip a piece of paper under it, then lift/flip over so the spider or scorpion or whatever is in the cup. Then all you do is take them outside! And you've rid yourself of the creepy crawly without killing it
