Description this view is from just outside the Titan II missile silo looking back towards the command center. the interesting thing here is all those canisters lining the walls. those are giant shock absorbers, with massive coil over springs (not seen from this angle). each Titan II ICBM base was 'hardened' against a direct attack from a nuclear weapon. if a nuke was detonated a few hundred feet in the air above the Titan site, the ground would be violently compressed downward into the base. those springs and shocks were designed to make the base survive such a blast.

pretty crazy, but impressive.

Which could be easily reactivated in the event of a full scale nuclear attack from China, North Korea, Iran or whoever else maybe developing/harboring nuclear weapons.

actually journeystarr, of the fifty or so Titan II ICBM silos only one remains. they were deactivated and then the silos were detonated with high explosive so that they could never be used again. this was a requirement of a treaty with the soviet union. once the silos were blown up russian satellites had to verify each silo was permanently destroyed by photographing the sites.

it's the same sort of thing we do out at Davis Monthan AFB in Arizona. B52 bombers are chopped up with a giant crane that drops a blade into each B52 airframe. after being chopped up, they sit in the desert for a certain number of days so russian spy sattelites can verify each plane's destruction.

Nice shot, if necessary these silos could be reactivated I'll bet.
