Description A manipulated photo of two AC-130 Spectres. I do not who to credit for the photo. Tell me who you are and I will. Its not like I am making a profit out of it anyways, and it this point, it is considered, MY art. There was a whole Roy Lichtensteen vs. Someone at the Supreme Court case, and guess who won?

On black wings of war
And fear
We fly
To bring our hammers on our foes

We only protect the grunts

The current pics look more like "Talons" and "Combat Shadows" to me but the picture doesn't show the details I would need for that. ^_^ Spectre and Spooky are very very nice birds. I worked on them so I should know. Kudos to who decided to put a howitzer and a gatling cannon (2 on some models) out the side of a C-130. LOL

Honestly, the original photo was of regular C-130 Hercules, but no-one needs to know that

I had lots o fun with this one, so I'm glad you like it! I grew up a military brat, so this is kind of my homage to the folks in uniform...

Yes, who-ever decided to put guns on a c-130 should be filthy friggin' rich for being so awesome. Unfortunately, it wasn't that persons idea originally. They used to put gats' and M60 GPMGs on C-47s and such back in Vietnam, I think they were called "Puff the Magic Dragons" or something like that.

And thanks for the fav!

Yep, and originally were meant to pin down troops and later were used to pin down submarines....or so my drill instructor said.

MeanderingBeing In reply to Sabrewulfe [2009-12-05 07:48:55 +0000 UTC]

Now how were they used to pin subs? Sorry, but thats the very first question that springs to mind.

Sabrewulfe In reply to MeanderingBeing [2009-12-05 08:03:08 +0000 UTC]

agreed....didnt make sense to me. LOL Just relaying. I guess mostly cause it would cause damage to the hull since it couldn't really destroy it, that alone would pin it and keep it from sinking but thats just a guess.

Well its just the fact that the surface tension of water actually absorbs so much kinetic energy that bullets slow below terminal velocities within the first foot of travel... (that actually surprised me alot... tried fishing with a rifle... discovered very quickly how pointless it was)

Hrm, Imma gonna have to do some research now...

Thanks for the info, mate! Its always fun to learn, which is something I try to do every day, despite public education's best efforts...

well one way or the other we will learn if that aspect is true or not in the end. lol

lol yeah I guess we will.

So what'd you do in the airforce? You said you worked on Spectres? So you were a mechanic of some sort?

Sabrewulfe In reply to MeanderingBeing [2009-12-05 08:55:32 +0000 UTC]

Ya, I worked on Spectre, Spooky, Talon, Shadow, and the MH-53J/M Pave Low II hellicopter, MH-60 Pave hawk, and several others I can't mention. ^_^

I was a grease monkey on aircraft engines. In Air Force Special Operations at that. ~_^

You get a chance to work on them v-22 ospreys? I hear they're pretty bad-ass.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sabrewulfe In reply to MeanderingBeing [2009-12-07 13:21:10 +0000 UTC]

yeah those engines are really something. A C-130's propellar blades weigh 500 pounds each and spin around at about 5 tons of force, but the Osprey's blades are 3 times the size with more than twice the HP.
C-130's HP is around 3k. ("It's over 3000!!!" -_- DBZ moment there. LOL)

Over 9,000!!!!????
I hear you, man. Kakarut! (Though to be honest I don't even know if I spelled that right...)

From what I understand, there are plans to make those Ospreys gunships, as they have the beautiful ability to loiter of a target area much like they use our AH-1z TOWCobras for, but with the added bonuses of cargo space, higher mobility, and higher top speeds... And to be honest, I am very curious as to where the development of the Osprey will lead... What other crazy ideas is the USAF cooking up at Wright Patterson, you know?

Sabrewulfe In reply to MeanderingBeing [2009-12-08 11:39:30 +0000 UTC]

well the idea for the osprey has been in countless Anime. Not really a surprise to see it really. I imagine it won't be long before we see a VTOL Jet engine model instead of a propeller driven one.

As far as them becoming gun ships. I doubt they will take the place of the current Spectre and Spooky. Every time the howitzer fires it moves the aircraft over 5 feet, and its that little because of the forward momentum and those BEASTS of engines that are on its wings. I think they would have to put the guns front facing, like an Longbow apache or Cobra.

C-130 can take off with 2 engines, land with 1 and fly with 1. interesting little tidbit of trivia there eh. ^_^

MeanderingBeing In reply to Sabrewulfe [2009-12-09 02:47:17 +0000 UTC]

Actually, there is a VTOL jet... There is a version of the F-35 that has this neat rotating nozzle, that rotates down through some doors, and it also has these jets on the side much like the harrier, so it can take off vertically from carriers and short strips and such...

Well, I wasn't thinking anything like 105mm, the chasis of the osprey is too small for that kind of weaponry... I was being told stuff like a 30mm chain gun on each side, with a dedicated gunner for each with equipment much like that on an AH-64 apache or AH-1Z TOWCobra... Either that, or a chin turret set-up with AGM-64 missiles on the wing pylons...

Didn't know that... but I'm not that surprised either. Those engines can pull some serious torque.

By the way, you are very cool, man. I have never been able to talk with anyone at length about military equipment for such a long time! Party on!

Sabrewulfe In reply to MeanderingBeing [2009-12-09 21:55:07 +0000 UTC]

yeah the JSF (F-35) is a sweet little VTOL but I meant for a cargo/Troop deployment vehicle like the VTOL capability of the Osprey. And thank you for the compliment. I too find it difficult to discuss millitary armaments with others. Most become bored when I start listing specs of things I worked on. Until I say something like "Yeah the Delta Force's C-130 is very wicked. Its equipped like the Hurricane crafts. meaning it can fly straight through one with no problem." etc etc LOL.

But if they arm it like one it will probably be with the Gatling cannons. With its mobility and ease of motion it wouldn't need a dedicated gunner really, just a computer/camera controlled Target Acquisition Module.

MeanderingBeing In reply to Sabrewulfe [2009-12-10 05:58:02 +0000 UTC]

Its not that they get bored, its that they dont care in the first place!

Yeah, I see your point... A bit unrealistic, but imagine an Osprey with a GAU-8/a Poking out the side... Now THAT would be the day of EPIC win.

...Actually, come to think of it, I might be having an idea! Think about it: a VTOL platform with the ridiculous tank smashing power of the A-10... I may be getting far-fetched, but hey! Them guys in the Air Force already made all sorts of stealth aircraft possible. I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled this one off!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sabrewulfe In reply to MeanderingBeing [2009-12-11 00:03:58 +0000 UTC]

Its hover capability would nullify the problem the A-10 has with it forcing the aircraft to stop in mid air if held down too long LOL.

MeanderingBeing In reply to Sabrewulfe [2009-12-11 03:15:12 +0000 UTC]

lol, I'd think it'd make it more like pitch it sideways and make it eat dirt... So not only do you get the awesome firepower of the GAU, but a several ton self guided bomb as well

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sabrewulfe In reply to MeanderingBeing [2009-12-13 02:11:56 +0000 UTC]

lol
yeah I guess its pitching side to side would make the cannon moot. heh. I can just see it. Boom Boom Boom! Mayday we are out of control Mayda.........*static*

Yes, but I do not have the time, money, or equipment to do it myself. And I do not have the money to pay someone else to do it. For now it will remain as is... but when I do eventually get it printed on a shirt, I'll be sure to post a picture and give you a heads up!

Growing up in the military, I've always had a respect for their weaponry. But Aeroplanes are just outright graceful, no matter how destructive. Kinda like my cat.
